Back Story
[/blockquote][/blockquote]The beginning of the new Turn caused great misfortune for the five remaining Weyrs of Pern. By the time Thread stopped falling off schedule many dragons and Riders had lost their lives, while the number of those that lived within the Holds had dropped as well. The Holders were furious that the dragonriders didn't protect those that tithed to them and in the end, all but one of the major Holds turned their backs on the dragonriders and the Weyrs; the four Holds that turned against their Weyrs renamed their Holds "Estates" but kept their landmark name.
All but one; Kaumi Hold which tithed to the newest of the remaining Weyrs, Kaumi Weyr. The small Hold had made itself known for its mining of resources and supplied many a Hold and Weyr alike. Still loyal to their Weyr, even after the horrible Threadfall, Kaumi Hold supported its Weyr against those that wished to see it torn down.
As it was, the other four Weyrs were truly unable to keep watch over their Holds and such, so the five Weyrs came together at Kaumi Weyr. It wasn't a comfortable place to live, but it was doable, as Kaumi Weyr was a massive place. There were only three Golds, besides Kaumi's own Gold Kairmath. However, the second youngest of the Gold Queens had been injured during Threadfall and she soon went between due to her injuries. Her Rider wasn't far behind. As it was, Kairmath was an old Queen, ready to retire and become one of those old grumpy dragons. However, the Gold decided to Rise a sevenday before Hers was to step down as Senior Weyrwoman and promote one of the two Goldriders. It was a beautiful Rise, with the old Gold having the remaining flight-ready males of all five Weyrs after her. Though in the end, with her named mate, Bronze Lutherth, the Gold went between before Lutherth reached her.
As it was, the Weyr was in an outrage, due to the fact that Mainery of Gold Kairmath chose to join her dragon rather than stay behind. Thus, there was no mention of which of the two Junior Goldriders would be named Senior Weyrwoman and Bronze Lutherth's Rider, C'rin, refused to step down, seeing as his Bronze had flown Kairmath many times before she went between. Fighting among the higher ranked Riders lasted until the youngest Gold Rose and was caught by young Bronze Opainth of Y'ran. With the new Weyrleader pair named, there was a somewhat peace, though many of the older Riders from other Weyrs were not happy that such young Riders ruled the Weyr.
As it was, several Turns of peace has reigned in Kaumi Weyr. However, the same cannot be said for the surrounding land. Thread has not fallen since the last Pass and it doesn't seem to be interested in returning anytime soon. Thus the Holders that turned against the Weyrs are looking to Kaumi to ''free'' Kaumi Hold from its leech of was Weyr. To bad the Kaumi Holders still believe that Holdfolk and Weyrfolk should live in peace, each needing each other to survive. There is talk that the Hold Lords are meeting with Kaumi Hold, to try and ''talk'' about freedom, but it is also said that each of the free Holders are planning to attach Kaumi Weyr head on.
It has been 10 Turns since all the Weyrs joined at Kaumi Weyr . . . Could this be the end of the Weyrs for good? Could dragon be forced to rain fire down upon those they have been protecting? It is hard to say. Whatever is to be done, it must be done fast. Gold Paprinth has a hardening clutch on the Sands and it seems that the Gold is looking out for attackers.
