"Most greens are rather silly. Atleast, the sillyest of the dragon colors."
"That they do! It's a good thing the government supplies the food around here. No normal family could afford that much meat." Mentari said.

Thaddeus nodded. "I wonder how they manage on Pern. But then, supposedly they have fewer people there...and thus more space to maintain huge herds."
He considered that. "Greens are silly. But then, there's nothing wrong with a bit of silly every now and then, is there?"
He didn't think so, anyway."

"Not in my opinion. Sillyness is needed to kep people from getting too serious." Mentari nodded.
"Yeah, less people would allow for larger herds. I really have no idea though. I'm not a farmer. Only experiance I have in that area is Harvest Moon games..."

Tad considered. "I raised horses, not cattle, but some things are similar. They do have horses on Pern, I'm told, although they call them something else."
He wondered about that. Heck, how did they have humans on Pern in the first place? There were various conspiracy theories that might explain it, but he wasn't sure he believed them.
He petted Cobweb gently. "Cobweb here is named after a pony I owned when I was younger."

"Named after a pony? That's cool. I used to have a pony. Little white one I named Tinkerbell." Mentari supplied.
She thought back to when she had had Tinkerbell. Her old daycare woman had given her to Mentari. The white shetland pony had been all play and no work. And she had absolutely never wanted anything to do with a saddle or bridle.
"Faizah says the creatures they have on Pern came from horses, but adapted to Pern. They're called runners, if I remember correctly."

"Right. I'd imagine they aren't very different. If you compare purpose to purpose anyway." He was sure Pern had racing 'runners' and draft ones and probably pretty little ponies for rich kids too.
"Tinkerbell? I bet she was absolute trouble. I think there are some names that should simply never be used...and that's one of them. Mischief right there."
He considered. "Cobweb was a sweet thing. He didn't much like to work, though."

Mentari laughed. "She wasn't trouble. Just didn't want to work. Hated the sight of a saddle and bridle too."
Mentari thought about the Runners Faizah and told her about. "Faizah says they have splayed toes... The runners."

Tad made a huh sound. "Maybe that works better on Pern than hooves, somehow." He considered that. "But that makes them more like camels than horses, and by all accounts, camels are the most obnoxious beasts on Earth."
He tried to envision a horse with splayed toes, but simply could not form the mental picture. It did not work. Horses were supposed to have nice, solid hooves. Maybe that was why the deformed dragons upset the Pernese so much...

Mentari laughed. "Camels are brats. I remember we went to the zoo once, when I was five, and the camel spit in my hair..."
((failz...))

Tad nodded. "I hear camels are one of the most unpleasant domesticated animals on the planet." He considered that.
"Anyway. I think my days of riding horses are pretty much over. Kimath would get jealous." And Kimath, of course, had a huge advantage over any horse ever foaled. Contrary to legend, no horse had ever been born with wings.

"Faizah is insisting on getting me a horse. She says, short of a helicopter, its the easiest way down to town." Mentari smiled. "Faizah did tell Ladeth she could approve the horse though. Ladeth wouldn't have it any other way."
((My brain isn't working. forgive me.))

Tad considered that. "Good point. Although watch out. Ladeth might mistake the horse for dinner." A pause. "I can help you and her pick one out, though."
He would bet he knew horses better than most people at Rocky. Of course, he might end up acquiring one for himself. He was still worried that Kimath might get jealous.
Then again, the blue wasn't jealous of Cobweb, so it might be okay. But he didn't *ride* Cobweb.

Mentari smiled. "That would be great. But she's planning on getting me a foal from one of the wild herds in the mountains." Mentair explained.

Tad nodded. "Well, in that case you'll need some help gentling it, likely." He studied her. "How much does Faizah know about horses?"
He was betting precious little if she thought a wild foal suited for her kid sister, but people had made worse mistakes. All he could do was try and make sure this one didn't result in Mentari getting hurt.

((Does Tad have a thing for Mentari? Lol))
"Faizah knows a lot about horses. She tamed her mare by herself, and helped Nakia train her mare too. I've heard she trained three fourths of the horses here at Rocky. She wants to get me a wild foal so that it will trust me. She says "a horse's trust in it's rider is built through training". Or something like that." Mentari smiled. She looked forward to training her own foal, just like Faizah had done.
Mentari went back to the beginning to the conversation. "I'm sure Faizah wouldn't mind some help. Normally Kain goes with her, but I don't think he's going this time."

(( I think she's a bit too young for him. Tad has, though, seen people get hurt by horses before ))
"Well, okay. I just hate when people come off and break themselves and Ladeth would likely get mad." He considered. "I'd be willing to help her, as long as I'm not away from Kimath for too long. He's a bit clingy, or maybe they're all like that."
It could be an age thing, too. Maybe the adult dragons were more willing to tolerate their riders wandering off.

((I had to change her age to 16. To make sure we didn't get hut down again. -_- ))
Mentari thought about that. "Ladeth would get mad. Faizah says we're going to "slow break" the foal. Or something along those lines. I don't remember the exact wording..."
Mentari paused for a moment. "Kimath could go with you guys. Faizah let's Surth go until they reach the herds. Then he sits back and watches." She smiled to herself. "Faizah and Kain have told me quite a bit about it."

Tad nodded. "That's good. Too many people will just grab a young horse and throw a saddle on it, then let it buck. Often before its physically or mentally ready to be ridden."
Of course, the Pernese seemed to be fairly careful with young beasts in general, judging by the strict schedule of preparation before dragons were permitted to fly. A size concern, likely, as the firelizards were often airborne within an hour of hatching at the most. Of course, the size difference between the two species was definitely rather...dramatic.

"Faizah says that's what happened with Sunset. And when she freaked out they sent her to auction. Faizah was smiling for months after she won Sunset at auction. The other bidder was a glue factory or something like that..." Mentari remembered the day when Faizah came home and said she had bought a horse. Their mother had freaked out. Mentari still remembered helping Faizah clean up the shattered dishes from the floor.

"Pretty name," Tad noted. "And yeah. These days, people think it's fine to break yearlings. I doubt that happens on Pern. The Pernese seem to have a good understanding of the limitations of young beasts, or they wouldn't have us be so careful with the dragons."
Not that Tad wouldn't have been careful with Kimath anyway. The thought of anything happening to the blue turned his heart cold.

Mentari nodded. "You should come and see Sunset some time. She's a really pretty shade of yellowish gold." She admired the palomino mare. To have such a pretty color must be wonderful. Then she laughed to herself Not like horses cared what color they were!
"We wouldn't be able to get close, though. She only lets Faizah close enough to her to do anything." Mentari warned. "Kain's black horse is the same way. Only Kain can get close to him. But Nakia's horse is really friendly." Mentari rambled. She shut her mouth tightly before she could say more. At that moment Tad began speaking again.
She nodded in agreement. She didn't trust herself to speak again, in case Tad had more to add.

Tad hrmed. "Some horses are like that. I've always thought it best to discourage it, just in case something happens to the rider."
Dragons, of course, bonded one on one and suicided when their riders died. Was it some mechanism intended to control the great beasts? To ensure they never went renegade and, say, started developing a taste for human? He wouldn't have fancied trying to take down a crazy dragon.

Mentari nodded again. She understood where he was going with it. "I'm sure Faizah tried to get Sunset to trust others. It just didn't work. I don't know about Kain." She smiled, thinking about the foal she was getting. "I want my horse to be friendly with everyone."
She thought about what her mother would say if she knew Mentari was getting a horse. Her mother would have likely sold without her knowing, telling the person to pick up the horse after she was asleep. She gasped slightly. "Well, maybe Faizah didn't want Sunset to like others. It would deffinatly keep our mom from getting rid of Sunset." Mentari explained.

"Your mother doesn't like horses?" Tad considered that.
He wondered how said mother had...or did she know about the dragons. His mother would have wanted one of her own, he knew that. He wasn't so sure about his father.
His father wouldn't have wanted anything that would make him have to give up horses, Tad decided. Even if a dragon was in some ways better...nobody had managed to breed a winged horse. Yet.

Mentari gave a halfhearted shrug. "My mom doesn't like anything. Except vodka. And men." She smiled slightly. "You should have seen my mother's reaction to Surth. Reyna was okay; she brought money into the house. But Surth was my mother's mortal enemy."
Mentari thought another few moments. Ladeth would have gotten the same greeting as Surth. Mentari was greatly happy that she had Impressed Ladeth here, where her mother had no standing. Where Faizah wouldn't let their mother step on foot inside. Yes, Ladeth would be safe here at Rocky.
"Faizah and mom fought a lot. But I'm glad they did. Otherwise Rocky wouldn't have been made." She smiled at that.
