IC Date = Week of June 5th, 2011 Time = About Mid-Afternoon Sarah lay on the ground, her hand resting peacefully on Iartuh's brown head. Her eyes were closed, and she could vaguely see the light from the bright sun shining on her. She knew that she would be covered in dirt and grass when she got up, but didn't care. For now she was simply relaxing with her brown. Her mind wandered. She could hear the birds singing, and imagined a peaceful meadow here in the mountains. In the center would be a small lake, deep enough to dive into, with a trickling waterfall feeding it. The trees would be alive with singing birds; jays and robins and finchs. The grass and flowers would sway as a cooling breeze came through with the scent of spring. mineSarah... Stop daydreaming. You are disturbing my sunning...Sarah grunted at the brown as he shifted into a more comfortable position. Of course the brown would be in her mind one of the few times she allowed herself to daydream. She sat up with another grunt, looking about herself as she scanned the weyrbowl. Her brown hair was up in a ponytail, and she reached back to tighten it before glancing at a tree with some low branches. Her brown eyes gleamed as she jumped to her feet and calmly walked over to the tree. With another leap and a well placed grip, Sarah was kneeling on the branch. "See you in a few moments, Iartuh." She said in passing as she began to climb. She heard the brown sigh, but paid him no attention. Sarah was in good luck. About ten feet up she found a good branch for reclining in, and it had a decent view of Iaruth without giving away her position. The only way someone could see her was if they knew where to look. And Sarah doubted anyone would know where to look to see her. She laughed to herself. This was going to be fun...

Definitely settling into weyr life easily, compared to an actual Pernese weyr, Evander found himself with a handful of free time. There was no clutch on the sands, nor did candidates have the same responsibilities that they would on Pern. Definitely not the most authentic of experiences, but it was better than nothing, not to mention that Evander was having the time of his geeky life with the dragons around.
Taking this extra time in the afternoon, Evander wanted to spend some time outside. The weather was definitely getting better, but the altitude made it chilly when the wind passed through the trees and peaks. Donning his black leather jacket, Evander was briskly walking out the weyr and through the weyrbowl. Under his jacket, a tan button-up shirt and black dress pants complete his outfit.
He spotted a number of dragons walking in their distinctive gait to and from locations, either with or without a rider, not to mention those beasts that wanted to bask in the afternoon sun. A lazy, lazy afternoon, that’s what this was. It was summer break for those still in school, which ended up being most of the weyrlings and candidates. However, being a part of the weyr meant no time for education when it came to raising and caring for dragons.
Evander’s attention was brought to a young brown that was lounging by himself. A smile on his face, Evander shoved his fists in his pockets, and slipped over to the brown. He kept his distance from the dragon, not wanting to disturb him, but it was a good experience to see a young dragon up close, so he would know what he would be dealing with in the months to come.

Sarah smiled as she saw the man approach. She didnt see a dragon with him, not even a flitter. So she deduced that he was a candidate. This would most definately be fun.
There is a candidate nearby. Im going to try and freak him out... Sarah explained to Iaruth. She felt the brown silently consent.
She braced herself against the trunk, looking down to keep the candidate in her sight without allowing herself to be seen. Sarah took a deep breath and readied herself. Then, in an eerie bellow, she spoke.
"How dare one such as you approach the great brown Iaruth?!"

"How dare one such as you approach the great brown Iaruth?!"
All he had done was stepped a foot closer, head tilted to the side and staring interestedly at the sleeping brown dragonet. The moment that a deep, booming voice rang through his ears, Evander jumped, eyes wide, and now tense down to the last muscle in his extremities. “Whit?!” he protested, his head twisting this way and that to locate the source of the noise. It was not a dragon’s voice, for it drifted through the air, and wasn’t confined to his mind.
“Whit’s that, then?” Evander asked, stepping around himself in a circle. “Who’s thare? And whit dae ye want of me? Ah swear ah wisn’t daeing anytheng!” The Scot watched his own feet, making sure he didn’t disturb the sleeping dragon, Iaruth, he presumed. Of course, the brown wasn’t particularly threatening to him, but the voice was still something to be reckoned with. “Ah apologize ef ah desturbed ye!” Throwing his hands up before him, Evander paced backwards, away from the sleeping figure.

Sarah burst out laughing so hard, she lost her balance on the branch. She managed to grab it as she fell, still laughing as she did so. She climbed down slowly, unable to stop laughing even though she knew laughing this hard and climbing a tree was dangerous. She jumped from the last branch, then doubled over in laughter. Tears were rolling down her face and she was gasping for breath.
Iartuh raised his head and glared at her. mineSarah, you are disturbing my sunning. Go elsewhere, please.
Sarah ignored the brown as she attempted to calm herself. "You... That was so... Funny!" She tried to speak, but it came out an incoherent mess.
Iaruth turned to the new comer, who was confused and alert. Ignore her. She is a strange girl, mineSarah is...
Sarah glared at Iaruth as she caught what he said. "Hey!" She jumped to her feet. Knowing that chastising the brown was useless, she turned to the Candidate. "I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist once I found the branch. It was too good a chance to pass up..." She reached her hand out. "I'm Sarah. That's my brown Iaruth." She nodded to the brown, once more sunning himself and looking almost asleep.

As Evander backed away from the dragon, a figure jumped out of a tree to the side. Utterly confused, the Scot blinked, arching his eyebrows and glancing back and forth from Sarah and Iaruth. “Whit?” he asked again, twisting his features into an inquisitive look. “Well, ah’m... confused.” Evander managed to stammer out. He still held his hands up, fingers slightly curled, and muscles tense for whatever may happen next.
“Egnore her?” he wondered, raising an eyebrow at the brown dragon. “But... She’s... Es she awright?” Evander said, proceeding forward to peer at Sarah with gray eyes. No, she was just laughing, with streaks of tears down the sides of her face, and nearly falling over because of how hard she was laughing. “Ah must be very entertaining then?” A smile formed on his face.
He returned the girl’s gesture by grasping her hand in his own. He gave her a firm shake. “Pleasure, Sarah,” he responded, now self-conscious of his accent. “Ah’m Evander. Uh-van-der.” As was custom for the candidate now, he repeated his name, emphasizing the pronunciation.

"Uh-van-der? Right?" She asked as she attempted to correctly pronounce the name.
She shook his hand back firmly. A strong hand-shake was a good sign. Afterwards she nodded to her brown. "That's Iaruth. We should probably go somewhere else. He keeps complaining that I'm ruining his sunning..."
((Sorry for the fail, Phaz...))

“Aye. Evander.” The Scot nodded as she repeated his name. “Evander Lloyd. Ah’m from London. Born en Glasgow, moved to London.” He smiled, and followed Sarah’s gaze to the brown dragon. “Aye, ah fegured that was... Iaruth,” Evander said, his mouth stumbling slightly over the name. “Well, ef we are desturbeng his sunneng, then we shuid leave.”
The candidate looked around the weyrbowl. There were other dragons about, thought unfortunately confined to the ground as per the rules set by Faizah and the weyr-wide lock-down. “Any place en mind? Ah’m afraid that ah stell dinna know ma wye aboot...” Giving Sarah a little wink, he gestured forward. “Shall we?”

Sarah looked around. "Theres a crop of rocks a bit away from here. we could go over there and talk..." she looked at the candidate to see if he wanted to.
"If not over there we could just climb the tree and talk up there."

Nodding, Evander waved his hand towards the rocks. “Ah thenk ah’ll be safer over thare enstead of up en a tree. ... Ah dinnae climb trees.” Skeptically looking at the tree from where Sarah was previously, Evander gave it little thought. Yeah, climbing a tree would be a hazard to the Scot, especially since he was more of a technical person than a tree climber.
“Come on then,” he urged, picking up the pace to cross the gap to where Sarah pointed. He was quick to leave the brown dragon behind, somewhat wondering if his own dragon would be so... immovable. The Scot’s heart was still racing, beating faster than it’s normal pace, from the scare that the weyrling gave the candidate. “Dinnae take too long!”

Sarah followed after him, somewhat disappointed that he hadn't chosen the tree. It would have been fun to scare the daylights out of another passerby...
When they reached the crop of rocks, just out of sight of the abnormally lazy brown, Sarah took a seat. She had her back to the sun so she wouldn't have to squint. She had forgotten her sunglasses; so stupid of her. Either way, Sarah made herself as comfortable as she was going to get.
"So... Are you a Candidate?" She asked without preamble.

Politely stepping to the side, Evander motioned for Sarah to sit before he himself took his own seat. Following the weyrling's choice, Evander picked a rock near Sarah, but also sat with his back to the sun that was slowly starting to set. Unfortunately, rocks weren't the most comfortable of seats. Evander shifted, trying to get himself into a position that wasn't going to hurt his behind too much.
"So... Are you a Candidate?"
The Scot looked up, having spaced out staring at the dirt ground. "Hm?" he asked, clearing his throat. "Oh. Aye, ah'm a candedate." Evander lightly coughed, leaning back and gently rocking. "Ye're a weyrleng, correct? Judging by yer drahgon. But aye, ah'm a candedate... For the upcoming hatcheng... Ah forget whit drahgon."

"Yeah, I'm a weyrling. Iaruth is from Crucith's clutch." Sarah confirmed.
She listened to him talk about the upcoming hatching. "Well, Raynith will clutch first. But Isath is right behind her. You have a chance at getting a hatchling from either clutch." Sarah stopped a moment to laugh. "With the weyr's luck, they will happen together! That's how Jadavath and Crucith's hatchings went." She explained.
She checked silently on Iaruth. He was dozing, enjoying the sun's warm rays beating down on his brown hide. She reminded herself to give him a bath after this. He would be dusty. Then she turned her attention back to the rocking candidate before her.
"So, how are you enjoying Rocky so far? What brought you here in the first place?" She asked, the questions popping into her head faster than she could say them.

Reaching up to scratch at an itchy patch on his head, Evander intently payed attention to Sarah’s explanation of the clutches. The previous clutches were from Jadavath and Crucith. “Et wad be nice ef they happened at the same time,” he agreed, bobbing his head up and down. And that was another interesting thing about the weyr. Did dragon clutches normally coincide with each other like so? Or was that just chance?
“Rocky es nice...” he started off slowly. “Nae that bad. Ah mess home though.” The Scot frowned. “Et’s very ood being so fahr away from home for so long... But et’s nae the first time ah hae been. Granted, ah was closer to home on the east coast...” He rubbed his chin.
Evander paused, thinking over Sarah’s last question. “Ye see, ah’ve been e-maileng Mester Fredrecks, and he envited me tae Stand... More candedates and whitnot. But also tae strengthen the friendly ties atween the U.K. and the U.S.” The Scot carefully explained this, but he couldn’t resist adding his own last bit in. “But ah could nae give up the opportunety to Empress a drahgon... Sae... Sci-fi-like.”

Sarah laughed. "I've never had the pleasure of meeting Fredricks, but it's common knowledge around here that he and Faizah often butt heads. But i agree with you, on the sci-fi front. It is kinda sci-fi to Impress."
She fell silent, trying to organize her thoughts.

“Oh... Common knowledge, eh?” he repeated when Sarah had stopped talking--not that she said much to begin with. “Thay butt heads...” At that, Evander had second thoughts. Sure, he wasn’t about to leave now that he was at Rocky, especially with the prospect of Impressing a dragon, but he had to wonder... It was at Ammon’s request that he Stand. Faizah was welcoming enough when he arrived, but was that only because Fredricks suggested it?
Did the Weyrwoman even have any power over the weyr? Or was she more of a figurehead to stand in while someone else operated the strings? “... Dis Faizah hae a say in the runneng of Rocky? Or dis the U.S. Military dae that?” Evander asked. “Whit dae ye mean when ye say ‘butt heads’?”

Sarah stopped to think. "They dont always agree. I was told during the storm she actively disobeyed him. Im grateful though. If she hadnt i wouldnt be here. But yes, Faizah has say in the matter of the weyr. But she has to take into account the demands of the military since they fund the weyr. Thats the reason for the lock down..." Sarah explained.
