The time had come and Missy could be found in the hatching grounds, laying her eggs. Ten of them, covered by sand and her body wrapped about them. Hers and Faizah approached and counted, then Nakia gave her firm orders to stay with her eggs. Missy crooned sadly as they left her...

Week of June 26th, 2011 Around 5:00 p.m.
Missy was with her eggs, curled around herself in the warm sands. Gold Reyna appeared, as she often did since she would clutch soon, and inspected the sands meticulously. A single egg began to rock, shaking the sand covering it from the surface. Missy and Reyna both perked up. Reyna then disappeared between as Missy took her place behind the clutch. She sent the image of the shaking egg to herNakia.
Nakia was in her room when she received the image of an egg shaking. She also got a wave of pride from who she assumed was Missy. Without a second thought Nakia was out of her room and running towards the hatching sands. Three of those eggs were hers for her own flock. She would show everyone she could impress even more than that Australian...
On Nakia's way to the grounds she ran into Faizah, who had a very pregnant gold Reyna perched on her shoulders and was carrying an arm-load of bowls filled with meat. Faizah motioned for Nakia to go first, and she did. Nakia smiled at Missy as she hurried to the eggs, giving the green a good petting. Then she gathered up her three eggs and moved off to the side. No one was going to get her flitters.
Nakia paused for a moment. She needed meat. Faizah had the meat. "Faiz! Bring me a bowl please." Nakia asked sweetly. Faizah arched an eyebrow as she carried over a bowl of meat.

The chittering of an obnoxious flitter and the faint humming of a more mellow fire lizard alerted Evander to the hatching. He vaguely remembered asking for one of green Missy’s eggs weeks ago, and had nearly forgotten about it. The Scot looked up from his book, a fitting science fiction novel, and twisted his head around to look for the source of the noise from the fire lizards. The annoying chirping came from a young green overhead, while a small brown on an armrest hummed in tune with the rest of the flitters.
“Oi!” Evander muttered, displeased. He glared at the pesky things, only until his mind made the connection. Dragons and fire lizards hum at a hatching... That was was humming. Eyes wide, Evander sat up, shutting the book with a muffled thump. He was on his feet in seconds, and already trying to bolt out of the common room.
The hatching sands was where he had to go, that much he knew. But as for what to do when he got there, the candidate had no idea. Book tucked under his arm, Evander was sure that he had time, and reduced his speed to a brisk walk through the hallways. He nearly got lost a few times, despite being a resident of the weyr now, only to turn a corner and spot the entrance down the large hallway.
Slipping into the sands, Evander immediately tugged at his button-decorated shirt. The heat... And during summer too. Clearing his throat, the Scot stepped through the sands to reach the small clutch of fire lizard eggs. He spotted Faizah and Nakia nearby, along with the golden Reyna and Green Missy. "Hou ar ye?" he asked the gathered residents, waving his free hand.

Tiffanie was somewhat excited. She'd been invited to attend the firelizard hatching...a dress rehearsal, she supposed, for when she could try for her dragon.
Actually, she suspected the point was that caring for a firelizard was the same as a dragon, only smaller and easier, and making sure she had one would help her get ready for being a dragonrider. Still...the little things were so utterly, absolutely, completely *cute* that she would have wanted one anyway.
They came in all the colors dragons did...she'd even seen a white one...although this was a green clutch so would only have the smaller ones.
Oh, who cared. Green was a perfectly fine color, for one thing.

As if getting impatient with the slow proceedings, one of the eggs left in the clutch started to rock. The tiny, creamy orb started to crack as the young fire lizard inside scratched at the shell. Bits and pieces chipped off occasionally, but the first major crack was when the hatchling forced her green head through a weak spot on the eggshell. The young female chirped, shaking her head, and trying to crawl out of the gap she made. With a protesting squawk, the green flitter forcefully split the egg in two, her body tumbling forwards and into the sand. Angrily, she stood up, pacing around and chittering. She shook her damp wings, and paused, mid-step. Someone felt... Different. The green cocked her head, staring directly at a blond-haired girl. Her tongue fell out of her mouth, and she pounced forward, nimbly dancing around the feet of the candidate, waiting for food. Egg #8 Playful Looks to Tiffanie #b0e800

When...oh. They were going to hatch *right away*. Tiffanie blinked as one of the eggs split in half and basically threw a lime green creature onto the Sands.
Which hesitated, then promptly pounced on Tiffanie's feet, twining around them rather like a cat. "Hold on a second there."
She was supposed to feed it...no, her. It was a green, which meant a female, which meant a her. She dropped to one knee so she could reach one of the bowls that had been placed there, and as she grabbed the food, ended up with green in her lap. And egg yolk on her jeans...oh well.
Maybe that was why the Candidates traditionally wore robes that could be discarded right after the hatching. "You're a pretty little...definitely pretty." Her own stomach rumbled a little. Odd. She'd just...wait. Empathic bond.
"Need a name for you...let's see." The green was wriggly and moving and...well...seemed allergic to the very idea of staying still. Wriggles? No...too silly. Same with Cutie. Dancer? Hrm. Maybe. Maybe but not quite...
Playful, green and already Tiffanie knew this one wasn't going to take life at all seriously. Bimbo would be insulting, though. Valley Girl? She giggled. Tempting...very tempting, but it failed the 'call test' of a good pet name.
Rascal? Not feminine enough. Bubbles? She was too *green*. "Ditz," she finally pronounced. "What do you reckon?"
Of course, the green firelizard only cared about her food.

Meandering through the Bowl, Shasta and Quith were chatting about the recent happenings in the Weyr. Just as Jas flitted over their heads in intricate maneuvers, so too did the conversation fly almost randomly across the spectrum. But their banter was interrupted when Jas gently landed on Shasta’s head and promptly began humming in a constant manor, eyes whirring an excited green.
Oh, Quith started. He is picturing the ha- She stopped when Jas jumped off of HerRider and Betweened, presumably to the hatching grounds.
“Missy’s clutch must be hatching… didn’t I request one of the eggs?”
Yes, indeed you did.
“Well my dear, I believe this means that it is time to gain a new friend. Let us be off.”
They reached the hatching grounds in record time. Shasta walked gently over the scalding sands, noticing Jas flitting over the procession. She saw the others congregating and sighed gladly. She wasn’t late. Seeking direction, Shasta looked around for someone of authority. Seemingly to the world she wondered aloud, “What the heck do I do now?”

Brownrider Y'ume & Brown Firenth Y'ume gave his dragon a pat as he admired his handiwork, giving Firenth a full-body oiling. Their weyr was situated near the hatching grounds and it was no wonder that they would hear of the humming that heralded the hatching of new dragons or flits. Firenth was the one that heard the humming and told His, There is a flit hatching occuring, Mine. Why not go down and watch.
Y'ume stuck his head out of the door canvas to look down and sure enough, he saw a few folks already gathering around one corner of the Hatching Sands. He secured the door canvas and with a shrug of his shoulders, he replied with, "I guess I could do that while your oiling goes dry. If you need me, I'll be down in the Hatching Sands." And with that, he made his way to witness a flit hatching.
By the time he got to the Hatching Sands, he saw that one of the eggs had already hatched a green flit and seems to have made an Impression already. He quickly looked to where the rest of the eggs were and counted, six eggs plus another three that were currently being looked after by Nakia. He assumed that those three would be for her then. He idly wondered who the other eggs were reserved for. But with a shake of his head, he would be fine enough if no flit decided to Impress on him. That didn't mean that he was averse to having a flit of his own, it's just that he never really had the inclination to try Impressing a flit because back in Pern, he was busy with caring for Firenth and fighting Thread. Now that he was here on Earth, maybe it was time that he pondered about a miniature dragon of his own. Once again, his gaze flicked back to the six eggs that was being guarded by Missy.
His eyes caught the appearance of the Weyrwoman and gave her a friendly greeting. "Afternoon Weyrwoman Faizah." he said with a nod and a little bow. Then he turned to Nakia and also gave her a greeting. "And a nice afternoon to you as well, Nakia." he said with a nod of his head. As for the others that were already there, he just gave them friendly nods as greetings and walked to stand at a place that would not impede on anyone's personal space.

Moments after the brownrider entered the sands did another egg start to hatch. Before anyone could react, the egg rolled over, burying it’s assigned number in the sand. However, the way it was moved to the side with two other eggs could only mean one thing: the egg was one Nakia intended to keep for herself. A few curious eyes watched the egg, interested to see what color would hatch, and those questions were answered when a bright teal foot suddenly tore through the shell. The flitter’s hide seemed to shift between green and blue, but the little creature was undoubtedly a male. He chirped in annoyance, wiggling the talons on his hind foot, and clawed at the hole made by his outburst. If that was anything to go off of, the fire lizard was clearly uncomfortable in that situation; as demonstrated by his growls, and the small, delicate snout that tried to chew away at the eggshell. It was with an angered purr that the blue managed to force more cracks in the shell, and widened the hole enough for him to try and climb out through. Backwards was the way to go, and the flitter clambered out of the quickly widening hole. Once that was finished, he growled, backing out of the shell, only to have the fragile egg collapse under his weight before he managed to get his head and neck out. He squawked in alarm, and flared his flawless wings, stumbling through the sands. Regaining his composure, the blue snapped at the eggshell, and turned away from it, the scent of meat catching in his nostrils. Egg #10 Hazardous Looks to Nakia #00EFE7

Nakia waved off the greeting to her as one of her eggs began to hatch. She immdiately grabbed a handful of meat chunks. She held them out as the little blue, it was a blue?, snapped at the eggshell that had collapsed under him. The blue head swung towards her as it scented the meat, and before Nakia could react he had shot his head out and grabbed a peice of meat. His teeth had grazed her fingers and she pulled her hand back in alarm. The blue's eyes were whirling with rainbow colors and Nakia smiled as she knew the Impression was made. Now she just needed to give him, him right?, a name.
Faizah smiled back at the brown rider. "Welcome, Y'ume. Here to watch?" She asked casually. She stroked Reyna as the hatching proceeded and Nakia had a blue hatch to her. Suddenly everyone heard Nakia yell out.
"Hazard! That's your name!"

Brownrider Y'umeAt the Weyrwoman's question, Y'ume replied with, "Yes, Weyrwoman Faizah. Although Firenth did say that I should come down and watch." as he smiled at the second hatched flitter near Nakia. "Are they all spoken for then?" Y'ume couldn't help but ask as he gestured at the other eggs that have yet to be claimed or to hatch. ((OOC: Gah! Sorry for the post fail. Oh and Faizah, I think the IC date for Missy's Hatching should be July instead of June. According to the Record of Calendar Events and IC Dates, Missy supposedly clutched sometime between June 19 and July 3.))

Violet was in her harness, on her leash, and extremely happy. So was Brittany, if a little more calmly put together. Violet was never calmly put together. She was, and was happily, a nice furry, black and white, giant pawed, heavy set, floppy eared ball of energy. And that, everyone who knew her knew, was how she was going to stay ver a very long time.
They were, at the time, stepping into the Hatching Sands, after Brittany had finally figured out what exactly was going on. Those firelizard eggs were hatching, and one of them was hers. She she had hustled her butt (thanking the JROTC program she had been in in Columbia High School the entire time) there so she would be on time. She was.
So was Violet, who was in time to hear the tell-tale scottish accent of someone she didn't know; that would change very soon, now that her attention had been caught. With a sudden burst of energy, she literally dragged her very close to swearing Mistress over to the young, two-legged thing, planted her scrambling paws o his waist, and stretched her neck as far up as it could go. She couldn't reach his face, like she had planned.
"Oh, wow, sorry 'bout that!" Brittany apologized, smacking her puppy-like dog so that she would get off of him.

Standing dumb-founded by the clutch, Evander waited for instructions on what to do, but received none from the owner of the fire lizard who laid the clutch. The Scot was going to politely ask the weyrwoman, taking a half-step forward, but the sound of an egg cracking stopped him in his tracks. One egg was hatching, and the candidate looked down at the clutch on the sands. The green head that popped out of the shell made Evander smile. The number on the side read ’8’, which wasn’t his number, so Evander held back, not wanting to accidentally bond to the fire lizard.
Forgetting his question, the Scot’s attention was drawn away as two more people entered the sands. A greenrider and a brownrider that Evander remembered seeing in passing, but wasn’t fortunate enough to have a conversation with either. Despite that, the candidate gave both of them a warm grin and nod as they approached, though he felt his gesture would be lost. Hardly worrying about that, Evander heard the chirping of a flitter again. He glanced over his shoulder to the pile of three eggs that Nakia had placed aside. Those were hers. Though Missy was her fire lizard, that still felt a little greedy to Evander. He shrugged it off, and watched the bright blue flitter make his way out of the eggshell.
The question from before suddenly jumping back into his mind made Evander look up at Faizah. “Ma egg’s nummer five. Whit dae ah dae no--AUHGH!?” he suddenly exclaimed, doing his best not to fall backwards onto the burning sands as a dog jumped up on his legs. The Scot stuck out his arms, and stared down his body at the white dog. “Aye. Hallo thare.” Evander pursed his lips, a shocked look on his face. “She dinnae cause any harm...” he assured the other candidate.

A large egg with the number 5 on it trembled and fell onto its back. A small hairline crack appeared across the off white colored shell.
Faizah nodded to Y'ume. "All except number one. That one is left to chance." she explained.

Brittany smiled apologetically, and straddled the happily wagging dog so that she was held in place. "So....What exactly are we supposed to do? I'm not exactly sure." Brittany's olive skin had a reddish tinge around her face, her brown eyes slightly wide.

Evander gently pushed the dog off of his legs, frowning slightly at the little tears made from the dog’s nails. “Nae harm tae masel, but ma clotheng’s a deffertent mah’er,” he chuckled, now trying to stay away from the small canine, despite the fact that her owner was now keeping a tight grip on her. The owner asked Evander a question, to which the Scot looked up in confusion again. “Ah din not knohw...” He shrugged. “Ah was aboot to ahsk wh--Wait!”
The egg with the five painted on the side started to rock, a few cracks making their way across the surface. “Tha’s mine,” he muttered, pointing at the egg, and looking from the egg to Faizah. “Dae ah peck et up? Or shiuld ah let et hatch ferst?” Evander wondered. Ahh! No... keep your cool... Though he momentarily freak out, the candidate did his best not to worry too much over what was going on. The first two eggs hatched without any trouble, so his would be find as well, right?

Faizah laughed slightly at Evander's freak out. "Take this bowl of meat, your egg, and find yourself a calm corner. When it hatches feed the hatchling the meat. It's simple." Faizah explained as she came up and offered him the bowl. She looked at Brittany. "Yours is number six. Take this and do the same as I just told Evander." Faizah nodded towards the egg with the number six on it. Faizah noticed Shasta in the entrance. She appraoched and gave the girl a bowl. "Number seven. Feed it when it hatches. And don't worry." Faizah offered the young girl a happy smile. The egg labeled with the number one suddenly trembled. A large crack appeared on the shell, smaller cracks branching out from it. After that, and without preamble, the egg burst into pieces and a green flit stood there. She looked around for a moment, as if trying to get her bearings. Then she began to run across the sands to Shasta. The green jumped into the bowl Shasta was holding and began eating. After gaining a mouthful she glanced up, her eyes swirling with rinbow colors. Impression was made. Egg #1 Hardy Looks to Shasta #35bc7f

Nocia had been worried lately. Sasath should have risen by now if she were anything like a firelizard with a destroyed clutch. From what Nocia knew, a firelizard that lost a clutch early in incubation, as Sasath had lost hers, should rise within two months at most to try to replace the hatchlings. Despite the female blue's assurances that she was fine and would rise when she was ready, Nocia had taken to watching Sasath obsessively for any sign of the glow and proddiness that preceded a mating flight.
With all this to occupy her mind, perhaps it wasn't such a surprise that her request for one of Missy's eggs slipped into some void of forgotten thoughts. Sasath was getting rather frustrated with her rider dancing constant attendance on her as if she were made of glass. There had to be some way to get Nocia to stop worrying and think of something besides her mating flights and the lost clutch. The blue lifted her head from the ledge as an idea came to her.
Nocia, Missy's eggs have started to hatch. Three have Impressed already. You asked for one, so you should go before it hatches and finds someone else to feed it.
Nocia jumped up at the blue's words and yelped, "Why didn't you tell me earlier? You knew I wanted a firelizard." Sasath didn't bother responding to this, as her rider was halfway out the door before the sentence was finished. Sasath settled back into the sun on her ledge and closed her eyes.
Nocia reached the sands at a full run and gasped out, "Sorry I'm late. Sasath didn't tell me the eggs were hatching and it must have slipped my mind." The rider of the only female blue ever, at least so far, walked up towards the unhatched eggs.

Brittany frowned as she listenned to the Weyrwoman's instructions, but did as told. It was more of a frown of determination or something anyway. She grasped a bowl of meat, not flinching away from the raw bloodiness as some girls might have. She had been the cook in her home before coming here, and she still snuck into the kitchens every once in a while to bake something nice, like an Angel Food Cake.
She wound the leash around her wrist, bent over to retreive the egg, and led Violet toward a corner that was, so far, not taken by another egg carrier? -bearer? Ach, she was thinking in Lord of the RIngs dialogue. Strange.
Violet was a very happy dog. She began to roll in the warm sad and playing and she kept glancing toward the others and the humming flits.

"Take this bowl of meat, your egg, and find yourself a calm corner. When it hatches feed the hatchling the meat. It's simple."
Looking down at the bowl that Faizah pressed into his hands, Evander raised an eyebrow. He listened to the weyrwoman’s words, since she knew what she was doing, and nodded when she finished speaking. He had to grab his numbered egg, and find a secluded spot for himself. Understandable. He remembered reading that the fire lizards weren’t picky on who they bonded to, so isolating himself and his egg was the best idea. The Scot grasped the ceramic bowl tightly in his hands, and turned his gaze from the weyrwoman, who was walking away, towards the eggs on the sands.
He approached and crouched down, watching the shaking eggs for a moment, before daintily picking up the one numbered ‘5’, and cradling it in his hand. The object was so lifelike as it continued to move, despite having pulled it out of the sand, and Evander was content to sit and stare for a moment. As another egg hatched, Evander stood, and stepped backwards, mindful of where he stepped, before sidling away from the clutch of eggs that was still buried. “Okay,” he muttered. “Time tae hatch, aye?” The candidate talked to the egg, moving off to the side, and setting the rocking object down on the sands.
The bowl was still clutched in on hand, and Evander glanced into it, noticing the bloodied meat, and frowned. Ew. But the fire lizards liked it, so he would have to get used to it for now, until his was able to hunt for itself. Evander crouched once again, eyes intently set on the egg, and watching each crack on the surface. He wanted to see the exact moment that the flitter hatched. And he already was cycling through names that he could use for the creature.

Evander's egg trembled again and more cracks appeared. Now there were hairline cracks all over the egg, and it was a surprise that the shell just didn't fall away from the little flit inside. It caused another shudder from the hatchling before the shell did just that. It flaked away from the little blue. It's hide was a strange metallic blue silver color, with a dark line across its chest, sides and tail. He stood on shakey legs and tried to shake the stray shell and sand from his wet hide. After giving up that chore he looked about himself. When his red whirling eyes came upon the strange creature before him, he cocked his head to the side in curiousity. One of the numbered eggs that had yet to be picked up by a person started to shake. Bits of the shell flaked off as the flitter inside worked to break through its creamy prison. From inside, there was a faint chirping, as if the fire lizard was getting angry with the shell that was proving to be a nuisance. The flitter clawed at the inside, as evident by the scratching, and the hole that was suddenly made by the hungry critter. A bright green head snaked out of the egg with a feminine grace. The green crooned, her eyes a hungry red, and continued to pull herself out of the egg, pausing only once to stare down at the number on the side, reading ‘7.’ Without any direction from any of the flitters, or the people watching, for the green snapped if they tried to come near, the fire lizard crawled across the sands. Her unfurled her damp wings halfway, airing them out, and peered up at each of the gathered spectators. As if sizing them up, the green turned up her snout at each one until a particular one caught her eye. Hungrily, the green leapt forward, skidding to a stop at Shasta’s feet. The green glared up at the rider, opening her mouth and demanding food from her hand. Egg #7 Grouchy Looks to Shasta #44f96d During the drama of the bright-colored green flitter, a second of Nakia’s eggs worked on hatching. This one had a ‘3’ written on the side, and was rocking like mad. The egg rolled slightly, but for the most part the flitter was content with its current situation inside the shell. It didn’t try to escape by rolling, nor were there any sounds from inside, save for the occasional chirp. The egg slowly but surely was being chipped away at, as a few tiny holes formed at various locations on the shell. A dark hind foot was shoved through a weak spot in the shell. This flitter was of a darker green shade, in contrast to her brighter sister. She was considerably more patient though. The fire lizard purred lightly, and withdrew her hind leg, only to use that leg once again to kick at the shell from the inside. The green worked at the shell, and only decided to emerge when she was satisfied with her doings. Nocia decided to pick up her egg, the one with the number four written on it, and take it to a safe place. No sense letting it go wild or Impress to someone else if she was right there to take care of it. Careful not to disturb any of the other eggs, Nocia scooped up the egg and took a bowl of meat from the Weyrwoman. She could feel Sasath dozing in the sun as a sleepy presence in the back of her mind. Her egg hadn't seemed very active compared to the rest of the clutch. Could it possibly contain one of the very rare white firelizards or was the hatchling simply not quite ready to meet the world? All of the new hatchlings were pretty in their own ways.
"What are you going to look like," Nocia asked the egg softly as she tapped the shell with a fingertip. Maybe this would encourage the hatchling to come on out and eat. This was nowhere near quite as exciting and stressful as waiting for Sasath to hatch, but that was the only thing she could compare it to. A firelizard would stay with anyone who fed it and treated it right.

Brownrider Y'ume
Y'ume watched silently as the eggs started to hatch. So far of the ten eggs, six of them had hatched to reveal four greens and two blues. Nakia has two of her three eggs already hatched. So far, she had a blue and a green. Another lass, a Weyrling if he wasn't mistaken, had two flits both of which were green. Another lass, probably a Candidate, had a green. And last but not least, the lad had a blue. Y'ume almost scratched his head for he just realized that aside from that lad who looked to be a Candidate, he was the only other male among the group.
Anyways, Y'ume idly wondered if the other four eggs would reveal a different color but he highly doubted it. He was content to just watch the flit hatching and smiling at the folks that found themselves Impressed to a flit or two and stuffing those hungry flits with meat. In some ways, Y'ume has no clue what having a flit entailed and wonders how different the bond would be as opposed to his bond with Firenth. He shook himself from wool-gathering and focused on the hatching wondering when the rest of the eggs will hatch.

As the fragile item in his hands continued to rock, Evander couldn’t help but glance away with a worried expression. This was only his first hatching... He didn’t know what was going on, but those with flitters knew what was going on, and what to do. The Scot steeled himself, knowing that he had to appear to know what he was doing... He continued to cradle the egg in his hands as the hatchling tried to break free. It wasn’t long before there was a distinct blue hide that was visible beneath the surface of the shell.
Evander lifted the egg to his face, peering into the egg, even as the flitter baby continued to claw his way out. The blue made it out of his creamy egg, and peered around at his surroundings. The candidate took the time to inspect the creature that he held in his hands. He slowly twisted his hands from side to side, so that the fire lizard wouldn’t feel the movement. There was a distinctly different metallic sheen to his hide, probably from his gray-blue color, but there was also a dark line running down both sides of him. “Hm...” he started to wonder, only to have the blue’s head dart back to him, staring intently at his face.
“Oh... Aye, I hae tae feed ye, don’t I?” Realizing this, Evander crouched, setting the blue flitter down on the sands, and grabbed the bowl of meat. He picked out a piece, holding it out in front of the flitter, and hardly flinched when the creature snapped it up in a matter of seconds. “Nae... Ye need a name, aye?” Evander continued to feed the fire lizard, all the while going through his head about possible names for the little blue. “Hm. Hou dae Paradron sound?” the Scot asked, half-smiling. There was no protest from the blue, as he continued to eat out of Evander’s hand.
