Have you ever wondered what would have happened if that first batch of eggs engineered by Kitty Ping had not hatched? If the colonists had all their hopes shattered, all their dreams washed away, what would they have done? What could they do?
100 turns have passed since the colonists arrived on Pern. The Colonists are dwindling in numbers, things have never been so bad, but thankfully Thread has ended, and people looked towards the future, but what the future would hold none could tell. They didn’t know if Thread would return, they had no idea if it was gone for good, or if this was merely the end of the pass as they had been lead to believe by AIVAS so many turns before.
But things have changed drastically on Pern. Massive Earthquakes have changed the face of the planet. The climate is not what it was, now the winters are longer, colder. The summers warmer but shorter. The North is a dangerous place, volcanoes and other natural disasters hinder any chance of settlement, the South has been hit by landslides and volcanic activity, forcing the colonists further into the South, having to explore the uncharted land laying beyond any they had so far encountered. Notes taken with them and the few bits of laboratory equipment have given them hope. Taking the three remaining sleds, they loaded them with what supplies and things they had left and then an advance party set off, making their way to the Azov Sea, there was a large river that lead to a large plateau, surrounded by mountains. It was pretty much self contained, herd beasts were roaming the nearby, the wherries they had seen flying were huge, and the Azou Sea was full of fish. There were some pastures nearby that would be ideal for growing crops. This small secluded area gave hope to the colonists and a new home had already been carved out for them using what was left of the stone cutters, a new Hold and a new kind of housing unit, a place for the future, in the mountains. There were enough stone cutters left for some more projects, but they were now in storage, under lock and key. But all hopes were turned to the new laboratory set in the nearest mountain, here the last few scientists were working hard, studying the notes left by Kitty Ping and Wind blossom.
A nest of fire lizard eggs found on the banks of the Sea have hatched and the colonists have flitters once more. They have also managed with hard work and perseverance to bio engineer 12 eggs. Those involved had studied hard, and they hope what they have created will indeed be what they need. But until the eggs hatch, they have no idea. All they do know is that this is the last hope.
There are barely 1000 people left. Struggling for survival. The twelve eggs on the newly made Hatching sands held all the hope of these last colonists. They had tried, they had worked, picking up the pieces of what was left after the last thread fall of 20 turns ago. Now only time would tell. People between the ages of 18 and 25 were invited to attend the hatching, but a limit of fifty was placed, so they were asked to fill out applications, and the final choice was made by the elders of the colonists, ten men and women who ran things as a council. It was the only way to govern the new settlement.
A new hospital and school had been set in the mountain, the Hold was protected from Thread, even though it had been twenty turns since it fell, people lived in fear of the deadly rain falling from the sky. Children and young people were being educated, but the way they were taught was changing, they were learning about the environment around them, and how to survive. Medicine was changing too, surgery was not carried out very often, so much had been lost, they began to look towards more natural cures, hating the fact they had lost so much but knowing they needed to make new discoveries for the future. They were not going to give up.
