History :
It seemed as if everything was going right on Pern for once. Thread had been banished through the machinations of AIVAS and the Riders, society was growing and blossoming with new technology, and while dragon numbers were dwindling, their services no longer as needed, new jobs were being formed for those that remained, and the whers as well, the people spreading across larger amounts of land and leaving their rocky homes for more village like areas in the plains and valleys of the Northern, Southern, and Western continents.
However, a mere two hundred turns after thread had been banished to the dark reaches, there was a sudden spike in dragon numbers, shocking everyone, and many eggs went cold, or their hatched dragons betweened, leaving the remaining weyrs scrambling for candidates. The numbers of dragons and riders swelled quickly, but the eldest of the weyrlings were only old enough to be about to graduate when the worst possible thing happened... A golden rain began to fall, poisoning everything that it touched, and was followed after by an unfamiliar sight... Silver Thread had returned, but it was no longer alone, and no longer as benign as it had once been.
The newer form of Thread, caused perhaps from the changed orbit, or proximity to another planet, was far more virulent than its predecessor, instead of causing instant pain, burning, or destroying that which it came into contact with, it instead burrowed under the skin or flesh of any living create, in turn both driving them insane, and using the host body to infect others with 'spores' of itself. A single person, once infected, would have the spores grow inside their bodies for a sevenday before they burst forth, becoming air-borne and infecting others, though they wouldn't show symptoms for days, if not sevendays, depending on how long it took the spore to grow, which only made it harder to spot exactly who was carrying Thread. As dragons and humans and creatures alike were infected, devastation and chaos reigned. Many people fled to the safety of the weyrs, all too great a number carrying Thread within themselves, and in turn infecting the very saviors that they had hoped would care for them.
As it turned out, dragons were especially susceptible to the spores, and would become mindless beasts, driven solely by their pain to destroy anything they came in contact with. If their humans became infected as well, they would occasionally be able to maintain some semblance of intelligence, but were still a terrible threat to all around them. Deadly and super intelligent, an infected dragon-rider pair that managed to escape the weyr without being put down were among the biggest threats, as they would often be driven to attack the very wings they once served with, with no compulsion stopping them from killing. Whers, on the other hand, were nearly completely immune, and only rose in prominence one this was figured out, and were soon trained to battle the Threaded creatures.
Months after the first returned Threadfall, the very first Queen became infected by the spore, a Queen who, already clutchheavy, managed to somehow lay the eggs before dying, though the world now mourns their hatching, as they became the first clutch of Turned dragons... The dragonets that emerged from the Threaded Queen's clutch were something entirely different from their normal kin, dragons that needed no rider, and were capable of functioning, living, and breeding outside the weyr, though they weren't nearly as intelligent as their weyr-kin, they were altogether too dangerous, bloodthirsty beasts that were able to slaughter many in an attempt to subdue them, human and dragon alike, no matter that they were young and barely hatched. From that clutch came the first Turned Queen, a gold capable of commanding any infected dragon, wher, or bonded human in their vicinity, collecting them into a Hive that destroyed anything that came too close.
Backed into a corner, several weyrs began developing tactics to fight back, brutal attacks that included flaming entire villages to prevent the spread of Thread, and coming up with ways to attack the maddened infected. The healers worked desperately to create a cure, attempting to inoculate the dragons against the Spore, but this created many undesirable effects, as well as many brand new ranks to be born from the confusion and death, only a few of which served to breed true. One of their biggest successes, however, were the Battlers... Small, horse sized dragons, completely immune to the disease, Battlers were the perfect combination of dragon and wher, lowflying beasts capable of flaming, and sensing Thread whether its fallen or in an infected human, they were incapable of betweening or flying for longer than a few minutes at a time, but they proved invaluable assets to the weyr as swift fighters and scouts.
Now, several turns after what is now deemed the Plague began to Fall, there are only three bastions of true safety left, three main weyrs left standing, with Pern's people either living as they can within these weyrs, or as vagrants, trying to outrun the Plague, or as bandits, attempting to claw out an existence for themselves amongst the broken. Rhonwhen Weyr, the largest of the three, lies nestled on the Southern continent among a vast mountain range, hard to reach and easily defensible, while Saraf and Bahram Weyrs stand as sisters on the Northern continent, the stronger, militant Saraf serving more as guardian, while Bahram acts in a more support fashion, with a trainee camp set up for all in training youngsters, weyrling, wherling, and trainee alike. However, there are rumors of a fourth weyr, some say completely protected and safe, on the Western continent where the Plague has not yet fallen or reached, guarded by the cold snows that swirl almost constantly, and viciously defended by strange beasts, though many have died in an attempt to reach the, what many say is nothing more than a legend, Firdaus Weyr.
