Sometimes, being a dragonrider was just...not the first thing on Tad's mind. When Kimath was asleep.
As long as the simple-minded blue was awake, it was part of who he was and what he had become. He even knew what it felt like to *be* a dragon. Sitting in a corner of the dining hall, he had a book propped up on the table while he munched on carrot sticks.
Yes, he knew he shouldn't read and eat, but it was, after all, his book and nobody else's. If he ruined it, it was his problem. The occasional snort of laughter that came from him, though, might well be indicative of his opinion of it.
It was a book that purported to reveal the biology of dragons. Of course, it was completely wrong.

Sasha slunk into the dining hall with an aggravated sigh and a long string of muttered Russian epithets. He poured a large cup of coffee, sipped it, and made an exclamation of extreme disgust. Then he poured it out, and replaced the vile black drink with tea.
Finding a place to sit, he pulled a large sheaf of notes from inside his coat, and let them fall to the table.
And THEN he noticed the young boy sitting at the table one up from him, studying a book on so-called dragon biology. He glanced at his papers, and smiled slightly. "If you are looking for information, you are searching not well. Entertainment, now, that is different." He said, only slightly expecting a response or even acknowledgment. Then again, he was used more to other wher handlers, and their inherent distrust on Pern of his white...

Tad grinned. "I'm gaining a certain amount of amusement from it. It's as far wrong...well, no. He does at least acknowledge that dragons have wings."
Most of them did, anyway. And Kimath had a fine, and perfectly usable pair of wings. "Although whers have smaller ones. Can they fly at all?"
He hadn't paid that much attention to the whers, given he had not had the opportunity to stand for them. An opportunity he might or might not have taken. Being from Earth, he saw nothing that strange about whites. And speaking of whites, Cobweb flitted out of between, dropping to land next to the book and peering at it. Nag appeared a moment later, chittersnorting then landing on Tad's shoulder.
"Was wondering where you two were."

Sasha grinned. "Well, most wheres do. From what I have observed, the atmosphere on Pern during the night allows them limited flight, and here, larger wings on smaller colorations do posses the ability to glide certain distances..." He cut himself off with an embarrassed cough, realizing he was probably sounding far to science-y.
Sasha nodded politely toward the flitters that had just appeared, giving a pleased grin. "Ah. Yes, the little ones... " He paused, tracking down Euclid with a distant thought. The blue was happily romping after the local rabbit population with his dog. Well, as long as they were okay.
"You are one of the new riders, yes? From the latest hatching?"

"No, the hatching *before* the latest one," Tad corrected. "Before the one with the chimeras in it." Which were beautiful creatures, but he did wonder about them, especially as some of them seemed to be sexual chimeras not just color rank. Unless, of course, one had to consider all six dragon colors to be *different* sexes.
Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe their biology just didn't work like that. You still needed a male and a female to make babies, not all five or six, so... So, they were alien, from another planet, and beautiful and...Kimath was definitely a boy.
Definitely.

Sasha raised an eyebrow, letting the young man think. Ah, yes. The chimeras. It would appear the oddities of the Pernese genetic system were becoming more and more complex each day... he would have given anything to get a chance to investigate them more closely, but the Pernese didn't like him very much, and he seemed to get the thought that some people around here were not fond of him either.
He sighed, and let it go. Perhaps there would be someone who would let him take a closer look at one of the chimeras... then again, he would probably also need more of his equipment to do anything beyond basic testing. He glanced down at the papers still spread across the table in front of him, and shrugged one shoulder.
"Well. Perhaps it is not to be."

Not being able to hear Sasha's thoughts, Tad was only able to respond to his words. "What is not to be?"
He reached up to rub Cobweb's breast, which the white seemed to enjoy. He produced that sort of crooning purr sound contented firelizards used to indicate their mood.
Being a fairly simple creature, Cobweb only cared about food and petting. He would, of course, never care about females, being white. Kimath would, but that was for the future.

"Ah. I was thinking... I am originally a scientist by nature, and it has been bothering me that the Pernese are so against my taking samples from the dragons and studying them. I was just thinking the chimeras are a fascinating mutation...that sort of thing was my specialty..."
He shrugged and waved a hand vaguely. "It would be nice, but at the same time, all of my equipment is back at my laboratory in Russia..."

"I'm not sure I'd want somebody poking and prodding at Kimath. Or even Cobweb. Who's a mutation too...whites were unknown until recently and the fact that he's actually an it." Was fascinating if you looked at it that way.
Tad, though, loved his little white, even if he was smaller than Nag. Who, thankfully, was currently notable by her absence. Not that he wasn't fond of the green, but she could be kind of annoying.
Make that very annoying. Maybe he'd let somebody take samples from *her*.
