Gregory grumbled quietly to himself. The doctors had painfully adjusted his shoulder to where it should be. He hadn't cried out, but his eyes had watered a little. His ankle was wrapped up in an ace-bandage with ice on it and elevated by a soft pillow. The only real problem had been his wrist, the same wrist he was currently arguing with one of the doctors about.
"No you may not cast it, and that's final!"
The doctor took one last long suffering look at his uncooperative patient before spinning on his heels to stalk off angry.
Gregory had allowed them to set it and splint it while they rattled something off about it being Colles fracture. Gregory knew that meant that he had broken one of the ends of his forearm bones, most likely the radius, but he didn't really care. He wasn't going to permit them to put a cast on him.

Daniel was coming to check out the infirmary. He wanted to make sure that his Streeth would be getting the best care possible in times to come. But he was there for personal reasons too. He had cut his hand a little while ago and needed some disinfectant and bandages.
As he walked into the room, he immediately noticed a frustrated doctor and a weyrling that was sitting in a bed and looked quite pained. Dan wondered what possibly could have happened but didnt want to be rude. So instead, he greeted the unfortunate. "Hello! I am Weyrling Daniel of Blue Streeth. Its nice to meet you!" He then offered his hand, careful to use his left so that the boy could actually shake.

Gregory looked up as a man came up and introduced himself. Taking the offered hand, Gregory returned the favor.
"I'm Gregory Hughs of Green Jadavath. I'm also a weyrling, and it's nice to meet you to."
Cocking his head in curiosity, Gregory studied the man. He seemed younger, but not by much, maybe only a few years.
"So what are you in here for?"

Dan showed the tricep muscle of his left arm. There was a red gash that, though no longer oozing blood, still looked pretty gruesome. "I gotta get this fixed up all pretty-like." He said simply. By way of explanation he said "I was playing with one of my flitters and accidentally fell onto one of Streeth's claws. He is really upset about it. Thats the main reason why im here. to give the poor guy some peace of mind. But im also here because Streeth has this thing where he needs to go to the Doc every week or so. Im scoutin' to see if this place is good enough for him." He winked to show that it was obviously not necessary.
Bringing up his courage, he asked "Ummm... so what brings YOU to this side of the track? Did you get in a fight with a wher?" he gave a little half smile that seemed to say that he didnt have to answer if he didnt want to.

Gregory looked at the younger man with something akin to a wince. To fall onto your own dragon's claws must be very upsetting for the dragon. At least it wasn't to serious. Gregory couldn't imagine how he would console Jadavath.
"Poor guy. I'm glad you're both alright. As for my injuries, I would have taken the wher. You see, I fell of a weyrledge and then got lost in the woods."

"Ouch!" Dan said involuntarily. That sounded pretty intense. And painful. "Well at least you didnt die." He said weakly.
Dan looked around again. "So what do you think of the Doctor? Do you think he is patient or good with dragons? or both? preferably both."

Gregory looked over at the doctor he had been quarreling with. The man seemed busy at work, tending to files and other patients that came and went. Smirking up at Daniel, Gregory replied.
"Yeah, he's a good guy, and from what I can tell, a competent doctor. I'm just a horrible patient."

Dan laughed with understanding. "Yeah, im the same way." He laughed again. "Im nearly insufferable, especially where needles are involved." He shuddered at the thought of those evil things. "But Streeth gets along with them surprisingly well. He actually enjoys his weekly visits. And i cant help but think the doctor that we saw at High Reaches looked forward to his visits too. It must be his natural dragony charisma."
Wanting to be give Gregory a chance to talk, Dan asked, "So, how do you like Rocky so far? Other than the deadly cliffs..."

Gregory seemed to ponder a moment.
"The people seem nice enough. Just the other night, a kind man gave me some directions. Unfortunately, I'm so horrible with directions, I still managed to get lost. That's what caused me to fall off the cliff."
Pausing as if he had just realized something, Gregory let his head fall back into the pillows.
"I never did get dinner that night."
Pouting, Gregory looked back up at Daniel with his hair falling into his face.
"You wouldn't happen to have a ponytail holder on you, would you?"

'Aww! poor guy! there is nothing worse than getting no dinner when you havent even done anything wrong..."
Looking at his bare wrists he sadly, "No, i don- wait!" He reached into his back pocket and pulled out his wallet. From his wallet he procured three or four hair ties. "What color?" he held them out, blue, green, white, and black.

Cocking his head, Gregory studied his choices closely. He seemed to waver between a neutral black or white. Then teasingly, Gregory chuckled.
"Which do you think matches my hair best? Fashion is so important these days."
Gregory grinned and looked back over at the doctor.
"Do you suppose I can get him to just stick with a strong brace for my wrist. A cast would be so cumbersome."

Taking the question with utmost seriousness, Daniel thought about it for a little while. "Well, personally i would pick white. It gives off a sense of peace, if you will. I find that when i see white hair ties a feeling of well being washes over me for a moment. before i realize that i am looking at a hair tie, of course. But still..."
"So long as its not broken in terrible ways, i would say go for it. A strong brace is all you really need so long as you remember to wear it. And a cast would be really annoying in the shower. And if you tend to exercise a lot, a lot of gross sweat that you cant get rid of is not preferred. At least for me... i dont know what floats your boat." Dan was about to say something else when Streeth started talking to him. Loosing himself to the world, Dan listened to his dragons questions.
MineDaniel, is the doctor nice? Are you going to be long? Whats keeping you? Are you in danger?! Do i need to rescue you?!?! Are you ok?!?!?! I'll come get you now. We dont have to stay here if the people here are dangerous! I will keep you safe, Mine!
"Oh, dear... Streeth is at it again." Daniel sighed, this wasnt the first time Streeth jumped to conclusions almost faster than his synapses could relay information. "Streeth dear, Im fine. You can come over if you want but there is absolutely no danger. And i am in fact talking to one of those 'people' right now. He is very nice and quite pleasant to converse with." Dan didnt have to talk out loud, but he did so that the other weyrling would be in on the gist of the conversation. He didnt like leaving people out when he could help it. Dan laughed a little. "Streeth likes to think too much and too fast. It'll do him in someday." At that he sighed and shook his head in mock sorrow.

Gregory nodded solemnly and took the white ponytail holder. The Green rider was pleased at the thought of finally getting his bothersome hair out of his face. His joy was short lived when he realized that he only had one hand to work with. Hanging his head in dejection, Gregory pretended to study the hair tie while listening and nodding at Daniel's comment about the brace.
When Daniel spoke next, Gregory could tell that he was talking to his dragon. Why he was speaking out loud Gregory didn't know, but it was kind of nice knowing that Daniel didn't just faze out.
"I'd call Jadavath over to let her talk to your Streeth, but she's been acting weird lately, like she's perpetually edgy. It's really getting to me. I'm just glad the doctors said her chest wound would heal alright. She isn't even going to have a scar, but the doctors want to keep the bandage on for a few more days."
Gregory paused.
"Thanks for saying I was a pleasant conversationalist. I'm glad I'm not boring you. Sometimes I tend to start talking about things people either don't understand or aren't interested in. You're not a bad conversationalist yourself. It's fun talking to you."
Gregory grinned at the other man and scratched the back of his head. The movement led him to notice the ponytail holder still looped around his hand. How was he going to get the blasted thing in?

"Awww, well thanks for the thought. And im glad that her injuries arent as serious as they could have been" Daniel said.
"Well, shucks! Thats sweet of you to say." Dan said, not without a little happiness. it was pleasant to be complimented on ones speaking skills. "i find it enjoyable to talk to me also. I just have such awesome things to talk about! and im so modest i can barely stand it." As he said that he grinned jovially. He was just being silly. As usual.
Noticing that Gregory had yet to use the requested ponytail holder, Dan asked, concerned, "Is there something wrong wi- Oh!" He had just re-noticed the fact that te other weyrling could only use the one hand. "Would you like me to help you with that?" He asked, indicating towards Gregory's hair tie and its distinct lack of keeping his hair out of his face.

Gregory chuckled at the other rider's joke, but he absolutely beamed at the offer for help. Gregory's smile was both sheepish and relived at the same time. There may have even been some extreme gratitude and sincere happiness in there as well. His range of vision would finally be restored. Chuckling, Gregory responded.
"Would you? That would be totally amazing."
Handing the pony-tail holder to Daniel, Gregory angled his upper half as best he could so that Daniel would have an easier time getting at his impossibly frustrating hair.

"Sure, no prob!" Dan walked over to the other weyrling and took the hair tie. Pulling the boy's hair back, Daniel expertly made a lovely ponytail. "That should be good. I used to have to tie may little sister's hair when she was getting ready for her lessons, she was never very good at it... Though how a person, unless incapacitated as is your case, could be unable to use a pony-tail holder is beside me."
Walking back to a spot where they could see each other easily, Dan suddenly remembered the gash in his arm. "Ahhh... pardon me for a moment." He then looked around the infirmary and found some disinfectant and gauze. He sat down on a bed next to Gregory and as he fixed himself up, continued talking. "So, yeah... Have you made any other friends around here? I ask because i dont know very many people other than you and i would like to know the nice kids from the jerks. Its always a good thing to know who to hang with or avoid."

~Don't know if it still okay to mention Dylan, so if it isn't, tell me and I'll change my post.~
"I met this nice guy named Z'volm in the hall who gave me directions, and a man named Dylan and his wher Dylansk saved my life."
Gregory responded eagerly to the other weyrlings question. He had only met those two tonight, and they were still the only people he knew of. He hadn't really had any sort of chance to have a meet and greet during the storm crisis. Maybe after he got out of the infirmary, Gregory would go out and meet some new friends.
"What about you? You know any nice people? Besides me of course."
The Green rider puffed his chest out a little at his words and tried not to wince as it jostled his wrist.

Hmmm... Z'colm sounded familiar. But was it? The name seemed to have negative conotations. But that was probably because he didnt particularly like the letter 'Z'. Best not to let prejudice take control. So he said, "Z'volm... Nice name! And a person that saves your life cant be so bad."
"Hmmm... any nice people... Well, now that I think about it, I havent had a chance to talk to anyone here except the Weyrleader, Weyrwoman, and you. Wow. I gotta get out more." Dan looked away, forlorn at how antisocial he was. But he focused back in but a moment. "And, oh, you are DEFINITELY one of the nicest people i have met. Not to mention modest as heck. But as they say, modesty loves company... or is that misery..." Dan paused for effect. And then laughed.

Gregory blushed lightly at the compliment and laughed with Daniel.
"I haven't really met anyone else either. Just Z'volm, Dylan, and the wher Dylansk. Things were pretty mixed up with the storm so I never really had a chance to meet the weyrleaders. I live here, but don't know a thing about whose in charge of me."
Grinning and rubbing the back of his head sheepishly, Gregory looked pointedly down at the other man's arm.
"I hope I'm not keeping you from professional help. I would feel horrible if you got an infection or a scar because of me. Thanks for the hair aid by the way. It feels good to be able to see again."

"Well, im pretty sure luh...luh...ummm....L'gar! is in charge of the weyrlings. But yeah, i know how you feel. It sucks going from order to a chaos that never seems to end."
At Gregory's concern, Dan said, "Nah, dont worry about it! I've had worse and anyway, scars are awesome. they let you tell such amazing stories!" He looked away for a moment, seeing a memory, and laughed lightly for a moment. "Streeth, in face, thinks the same way. He has this one injury, on his tail, and every time someone asks about it, he tells a different story. Once he got it in a fight to save me from a mercenary. Another time, he was fishing with it, dont ask me why, and he caught a shark. There are SO many i have heard, i have no idea where he thinks them up. But the funniest part is he got it from a fight with one of the kitchen staff back on Pern. He was trying to steal one of the wherries they were roasting because he wanted to know what cooked food tasted like. The cook, she..." He broke out in a fit of giggles, "She," tears were rolling down his cheeks, "She waved her arms at him and shouted such obscenities. and then, and then" he tried to calm himself to finish the story, "She tried hitting him with the spoon she had been using on some stew. Streeth was so surprised by her that he jumped away. But he tripped and his tail swung around, and suddenly his tail was firmly in his mouth. If a dragon ever looked bewildered, pained, and perplexed all at the same time it was at that moment." He wiped the tears from his eyes. "That." He paused for emphasis. "was an amusing day."
