IC Date: Jan 15th, 2012 IC Time: 12:58 p.m. [/b][/u] Nakia's ultrasound was scheduled, and she was sitting patiently inside the Infirmiry. She had insisted to Faizah that she would be fine at the appointment, and Faizah needn't come with her. Which had taken hours to convince her to let Nakia come by herself. But she had managed it. And now she was waiting for S'tor, who had also been invited to this shindig. She smiled and rubbed her belly a little. There was a baby growing there, and Nakia was finally starting to feel a little better about it. She was starting to like the idea of a baby, even though she didn't want to raise it. Faizah could still do that. The doctor stepped into the waiting room, and Nakia looked up. He waved her into the room, smiling. "Ultrasound, right?" He asked. Nakia nodded.

Not wanting to raise it...not an uncommon sentiment amongst dragonriders. S'tor made his way to the infirmary.
He had to admit he was a little worried...worried that the kid might turn out to be deformed. He was almost *more* worried it might turn out to be twins. Twins were bad...although perhaps not so much here, with Earth medicine to support mother and babies.
He had to give them that. They knew a lot more about sickness, injury, and health here. Not enough to help the dragons, though.
Not enough to help Ryath...not that Ryath thought he needed to be helped any more than Crucith did. He reached the room right as Nakia spoke to the doctor. Who already knew, or should, that he was the father. Earth people thought that was important...

Nakia noticed S'tor enter the Infirmiry. She smiled at him a little. She had a feeling he was worried about the baby, which wasn't surprising considering the circumstances. On Pern they didn't have ultrasounds, and Nakia had a feeling he was nervous about her possibly bearing twins.
Nakia didn't think so. No one in her family had ever had twins, so why would she? Yes, she understood sometimes twins weren't genetic. But she justs didn't think she was pregnant with twins. Simple as that.
Nakia followed the doctor into the ultrasound room, laying down on the table. Once she was comfortable the doctor started to apply the warmed gel to her abdomen. Nakia had waited a while for this. Today, she might very well discover the gender of the baby...!

S'tor watched with some interest. The dolphins could do something similar, if the woman was close enough to the ocean to fly their straight. Sometimes people would do it if there was a high risk of twins or if a woman had a history of false alarms.
But the Earth people had tools to do it and make it routine, available to everyone. For right now, he didn't have much to say. Other than a more genuine than normally seen from him smile for Nakia.
If they did find out the gender, then he was supposed to come up with a name...

Nakia's eyes darted constantly between the monitor, the doctor, and S'tor. She noticed that S'tor was smiling, a genuine smile, and she couldn't help but smile back. The longer it took for the doctor to find an image, the more excited and the more irrate Nakia became.
Just when she was about to complain about it, the doctor smiled. "There." He said, pointing to a shape on the monitor. He outlined it with the machine. "There is your baby." He smiled at Nakia. Now that the doctor had pointed it out, she could see the outline of a small baby. She smiled back at him.
Nakia was even more glad that she had convinced Faizah not to come. This was her moment. This was her chance to see the baby before it was born, and be excited about it. Without Faizah there to annoy her or ruin her mood...

"So tiny...they're tiny enough when they come out." S'tor had seen small babies with the creche workers, but of course, this one had a lot of growing yet to do even to get to that stage.
"Is it a boy or a girl...can we tell?" He was curious...he had to admit he hoped for a son, but what man didn't? A son of his might even, one day, bond a bronze dragon.
At least a brown... He tried not to let that show. Nakia, he knew, did not want to raise the kid...but he didn't know if that precluded having a gender preference. She might prefer a daughter.
But they could be sure of one thing, at least. No twins.

The doctor nodded, moving the wand around for a few moments. Nakia looked at S'tor, trying to figure out his thoughts. She frowned, wondering what he was thinking now. But did she dare ask...?
She dared. "Tell me what you're thinking, S'tor." She said, a questioning tone to her voice.
The doctor suddenly paused, looking at the monitor intently. With a smile he leaned back before speaking. "It looks like a boy." He said, looking between S'tor and Nakia.

"I was wondering which you would prefer, boy or girl." A boy. He thought...Naktor was the obvious name. Naktor Pandora. An interesting name...of course, the Earth people might think it strange.
They didn't seem to use sire and dam to make names, but then they all had last names. "But it's possible that you could be wrong?" S'tor inquired. It was rather hard to see...he too thought he could see a small penis on the child, but with the image being somewhat fuzzy, he could see why it might be possible to misjudge it.

The doctor nodded. "Yes. With these images I can be mistaken. If you would rather be more sure about it, I could bring in a 3D ultrasound machine. They are much more accurate."
Nakia thought about that for a moment. Did she want a boy or a girl? Did she even know what she wanted? The answer to that was no. Nakia had no idea about her gender preference when it came to the baby. Part of her wanted a girl, just for the chance to see how pretty the little girl would grow to be. And what mother didn't want a daughter? But the bigger part of her wanted a boy. A strong little boy to be a daredevil and try her sister's patience, and who she could laugh at his antics.
She smiled. "I think a boy would be my choice. Boys are a little more straight forward than girls."

"I'd prefer a boy, but I think most men do." Of course, some wanted a daughter to spoil, but S'tor did not believe in spoiling anyone, male or female.
"As to that, I think that's up to Nakia. If you're wrong...well, it's more information than I would have expected." S'tor regarded the image on the screen again. It did look like...a baby, already formed, although far too young to survive outside the protection of the womb.

Nakia smiled, agreeing with S'tor. "I agree with you. I think most men do want a son." She couldn't take her eyes off the screen, watching their child move around on the monitor.
Nakia half shrugged. "I would like to know..." She looked at the doctor, letting her sentence hang there. She wanted to know for sure if it was a boy or not, but she didn't want to bother the doctor.

S'tor studied the screen again. It was really up to Nakia whether she wanted the...threedee thing. He supposed it was a more precise thing.
It was, he realized, just like the camera things the Earthers liked to record everything with (including, he had found, sex, although he hadn't caught anyone around here at it). Except it looked inside like dolphins did.
Maybe the dolphins had given them the idea, although he got the weird impression people here thought dolphins were just reasonably smart animals.
Earthers were...strange.

Nakia nodded to the doctor. Her curiosity to know if the child was a boy or not. "I'd like the 3D ultrasound." She told him.
The doctor nodded and smiled at Nakia. He left the room, assuring them he would be back in a few moments. Nakia glanced over at S'tor, again wondering what he was thinking. And that thought led to another. Nakia wondered why she was suddenly so taken with the man before her. Sure, he was great in bed, but that couldn't be the only reason for her sudden curiosity in him. And sure, she was carrying his child, but that couldn't be the only reason either. She bit her lower lip, trying to think about the other reasons.
Could it be that Nakia... liked... S'tor? She wondered about it. Perhaps it was possible that she had grown to like S'tor in the previous months. She was certainly a little more than interested in him. She shook her head, trying not dispell the thoughts floating around in her head.
"So... What names are you thinking of?" She asked, glancing at S'tor a little shyly.

"Hrm. Niktor would be the obvious for a boy, but I'm not sure it flows well. I was also considering Nisaltor, but it seems a little greedy to use *all* of my name." it did sound better. "For a girl...how about Sakia?"
A girl would be easier to name, but he was fairly sure it was a boy. Ah well. "And your last name, of course." They had already discussed that. It had to be that way.
Of course, the kid would end up seen as having an odd name by Earthers anyway, although he did know there were some Earth names that shortened to Nick. Which might make Niktor the better choice.

Nakia nodded. "I like Sakia... But Niktor sounds good too. Maybe Nick for short." She smiled at the idea. But she didn't care much for names. That was Faizah's domain.
The doctor came back into the room, pulling what looked like another ultrasound behind him. It was just a bit bigger and it was on wheels. That seemed to be the only difference. The doctor wheeled it over to Nakia, settling it before grabbing a wand like the previous one.
"This will give us a clearer picture so we can tell exactly what the baby is. If the baby hasn't moved to obstruct our view." The doctor smiled a little, keeping the light mood.

S'tor mock-grumbled. "Given it's my kid, I wouldn't be surprised if it did."
Wait, the brownrider was, actually...making a joke about himself? That was unheard of. But then, so was this situation. And he knew he could be contrary...and this was something, he realized, that violated all tradition. As did Nakia's dragon.
But he would still give the kid a name by Pernese tradition. And Niktor it would be, for a boy, now Nakia had signed off on it, more or less.

S'tor should have kept in mind that it was Faizah that had to agree with him on the name, not Nakia. But that was beside the point at this moment. The doctor moved the wand, getting the image of the baby. It didn't look exactly like a baby at such an early stage of development, but it was close enough.
Nakia gasped, actually being able to see the details of the child's face. Then the doctor moved it only a hair space and smiled. Nakia could see it too. The baby was obviously a boy. "A boy it is." The doctor said aloud. Nakia nodded in agreement.
"I guess its name is going to be Naktor, huh?" Nakia asked with a smile as she looked at S'tor.

OOC We both kept typing Niktor, didn't we. Huh.
"Naktor it is," S'tor said, finally. It was an easy choice in the end. "He doesn't look remotely...finished," the brownrider mused. "Kind of blurry...or is that the ultrasound?" There was a face, but it didn't look *done* somehow.
Maybe it wasn't. Maybe that was why children had to be in the womb for nine months or so before being born...because that was how long it took them to get finished enough. Would be the same for dragons in their eggs, too.

((Yeah, we do. Lol.))
Nakia smiled, running the name through her mind. It sounded fine to her, but she would run it past Faizah when she saw her later that day. Nakia liked the way Naktor rolled off the tongue.
The doctor nodded. "The baby is only a few months along. You're right when you say it doesn't look finished. The baby is mostly developed, but still has a ways to go." The doctor explained.
((Sorry for short post.))

S'tor nodded a bit. "Of course, they aren't *really* finished when they're born, either...I mean, all babies do is eat, sleep, and make a fuss."
He was pretty much accurate there. It took a while for a baby to really be a human being in any meaningful way. On the other hand, you had to start somewhere. "Dragons come out more finished, but that's fairly common for things that come out of eggs."
Not always...some birds came out naked, but a lot more came out looking just like miniature adults and acting it too.

The doctor nodded. "Yes, that's true. But it has to do with what our survival needs were when our species developed."
Nakia interrupted. "Can we not talk about this? And am I done, doc? I really need to pee." Nakia said. The last thing she wanted to hear about was the evolution of the human race. Faizah used to talk about that when they were younger, and it had driven Nakia up the wall.
Atleast she had found out what the gender of the baby was. A boy. Naktor. She smiled. She really did like that name. Nakia hoped Faizah would too. It was a good name, either way you looked at it.

Pregnant women always needed to pee. Somebody had told S'tor that. Spending any time with Nakia right now was proving it was absolutely true.
Well. That was the way of things. He had often been glad he was not a woman, and now he was really glad he wasn't one. When it came to producing children, females had to do all of the work. He stepped back so Nakia could get to the door first, in case she really did have to make a dash for it.
But that was his son she was carrying. His son...

((So tired... Must post...))
The doctor nodded, handing Nakia a rag to wipe her abdomen off with. As she did that, she swung her legs over so she could sit up. She had started feeling just slightly winded, probably from laying on her back for so long. After she was finished wiping her stomach off she slowly got up from the examination table.
She gave a shy smile to S'tor as she passed him on the way to the bathroom.
That left S'tor and the doctor alone. Which might be a good or bad thing. Depending on who wanted to know what. The doctor, while cleaning up from the ultrasound, started talking. "Like Nakia, I'm a little curious what you're thinking, S'tor. Its not everyday a man gets the news that his first child is a son..."

S'tor considered that. "No, it isn't." He figured the doctor had expected more outward enthusiasm - not knowing that S'tor seldom showed such. Probably part of why he had Impressed a brown.
"Hopefully he'll grow up to be a good kid." Not that S'tor didn't plan on making sure of that - by his own standards, which might not match those of Earth. But every man had hope for his sons. "One day he might have a dragon of his own. I hope so, anyway."
He would be upset if Naktor chose to leave the Weyr, but he would not stop him if he did. That wasn't how a father acted, in his mind.

The doctor nodded, smiling a little. "With Faizah acting as it's mother, I'm positive that the child will be a good kid." The doctor did not know that S'tor and Faizah didn't agree. But it didn't matter. He had known Faizah since she first started working with the government. Since she had started at Rocky.
Nakia came back into the room, her hand over her slightly rounded abdomen. She gave the two men a small smile. "Little Naktor is making a fuss now, apparently." She explained.
