Picture:
Base Personality: Cynical but shy, Shannara is not one to let something pass without giving her two cents. However, her shyness shows up when confrontation boils over. She shuts down, and just glares at her opponent, letting them rant without giving them an opportunity to pick apart her responses, as she refuses to give them a response. She has a grudge with all dragonriders and their dragons, having been abused by them on Pern.
History: Her mother was sickly when pregnant with Shannara, and due to complications after having the child prematurely, became even more so. Shannara was just as sickly, and would have perished if not for her mother insisting the child be taken to a Healer. Living in Fort Hold, it was not a long trek to the Healer Crafthall, but it was almost too much for Shannara’s sickly mother. At the demand of her mother, Shannara was looked at first, and it was determined that she had an infection and inflammation of the lungs.
Once the child was taken care of, it was already too late for Shannara’s mother, Leannra. Her illness had all but shut down her liver and kidneys, and it was poisoning her. Even the Masterhealer couldn’t stop it or even slow it. All they could do was make her more comfortable in her dying hours. Shannara’s father, a simple craftsman named Shariss, promised his dying wife that he would make sure the newly born Shannara would live, and that he would make sure their son, six years Shannara’s elder, understood what had happened. With a weak smile, Leannra then breathed her last.
Shannara had been born bald, but when it grew in, her hair was white. Already back at Fort Hold, Shariss asked the local Healer, and was told that it might have been from Leannra’s illness and the child’s own sickness at birth. Her brother did not like the fact that the child came back, but not their mother. He blamed her for Leannra’s death, despite the explanations Shariss provided.
And that’s how much of Shannara’s young childhood went. Her father went on with his life, though he was heartbroken and refused to court another woman. His children were his only solace, though he couldn’t keep them from bickering and fighting with each other. Or keep his son from attacking, mostly verbally, his daughter. With her brother being her elder, it was one reason why Shannara started shutting down during confrontation.
She was 15 when her brother finally physically pushed her around, and she refused to put up with it. Despite being nearly a head and a half shorter than her wiry brother, she lunged at him after recovering from his forceful shove, but he avoided her lunge and she crashed into the wall. Dazed, she staggered and was then shoved down and pinned. He warned her that to him, she was nothing more than a parasite to the family and that she was more useless than a deadglow before releasing her, their father entering moments later.
Not wanting to deal with her brother’s abuses and her father’s constant, lingering depression, when she was Searched to Stand a couple days later, she eagerly left. She, of course, had her father’s blessing to go, as he knew it was in her best interest to leave.
The Hatching went by, and several more like it, yet Shannara had yet to Impress. After Standing, still unimpressed, at her fifth Hatching, a couple of the older weyrlings, brats even for Weyrborn children, followed her as she returned to her room in the candidate barracks.
“I wonder why she hasn’t Impressed,” one, a bronzerider weyrling, sneered. “I was there when she first showed up. I could have sworn the dragons curled their lips at her.”
“I bet it’s because she must be a cross old woman on the inside. I mean, look at that white hair! Why would a dragon be bothered to bond to such an unimpressive, cold person?” a blue weyrling laughed.
The third was a brown weyrling, and he seemed to be the oldest of the three. He noticed her general lack of a reaction, nudged the bronzerider, and lifted his chin toward her. The bronzerider narrowed his eyes, sped up to catch up to Shannara, grabbed her shoulder and whirled her around to face them.
“Hey, you worthless Holdborn! Your betters are talking to you, so it would be in your best interest to respond to us.”
Shannara glared at them, then muttered, “Shard off. You only think you’re better than I am because you have dragons. In truth, you know I’m better than you because I'm not some spoiled brat who thinks they're the best thing in the world because you have a dragon to fight Thread!"
The bronzerider scowled, then backhanded her. "Don't you dare talk to me like that, you stupid little wench! I'll teach you to talk to your betters with such an attitude!" He grabbed her and shoved her into the closest empty weyr, though the bluerider and brownrider did not follow him.
Shannara still refuses to talk about what happened after that, but it was only a couple days after that she went to N'ton and asked to be sent away from Pern. Her allergy to something about Thread was getting dangerously strong, and she wanted to be away from the riders who had humiliated her.
After some consideration, N'ton allowed her to leave, seeing Shannara was on the verge of a breakdown. Before he had a greenrider take her to Earth, he asked her what had changed her mind about staying at Fort. She shut down, only muttering, "I don't want to talk about it..." N'ton didn't push the matter, but Shannara knew he knew something was wrong.
Without much further delay, she went to Earth and to Rocky.
