Of average height and slightly heavy build, Miriam's best feature is her hair. Dark brown, with red highlights in the summer, it flows over her back in waves. This distracts from the fact that she is, otherwise, rather homely. She has a slightly large nose that dominates plain features, although there's a pleasant light in her dark eyes. Her complexion is unusually fair, and she tends to burn rather than tanning. Her voice is a mezzo soprano, and extremely pleasant in tone, especially if raised in song.
She tends to prefer slightly masculine clothing - jeans, boots, and flannel shirts. A fondness for the color blue also dominates her wardrobe, and she often has blue enamel studs in her pierced ears.

Miriam is stubborn, motherly and defensive. She sticks up for herself and her friends - sometimes even when her friends would almost rather she didn't. Obsessed with equality and justice, she is outspoken against racism, sexism, and any other bad -ism you can think of.
Unfortunately, she often takes things to the other extreme. Hierarchies are bad. Somebody being in charge? Maybe a necessary evil, but it doesn't make them better than her, above her, or anyone special. The more traditional people from Pern might mistake this for disrespect. (Certainly, having a shiny dragon doesn't make you anything).
She expresses her opinion on this matter with either bluntness or sarcasm, depending on her mood. Her humor, when heard, is dry, and often at the expense of either those she does not like or herself. She can be very self-deprecating, which is often mistaken for lack of self esteem. Truth is, she has no shortage of that quality, but she does tend to try and justify herself if pushed, especially about something she has made or is trying to achieve. Finally, she has a strong sense that if she doesn't do it, nobody else will - getting her to delegate or to pass the buck is very hard. She'll take on too much, given a quarter of a chance, and earning her trust takes time.
Miriam has a good singing voice and sense of pitch. Although she would never make a professional or a master harper, she enjoys singing and is rarely found not listening to music.
History:
Miriam was born to a single mother on the wrong side of the tracks. She grew up knowing that if she didn't do it nobody would. Her mother resorted to drink, and then to drugs, to escape her life. When Miriam was eight she overdosed and died.
The girl was damaged goods. Nobody was going to adopt her and she was tossed from foster home to foster home. Briefly, she became a bully, but she learned better when she met Hal, an older man who became the mentor and father figure she had never had. Unfortunately, he too died when she was thirteen, of a heart attack.
Since then, she has been alone...her foster parents mean nothing to her. She almost dropped out of school more than once, but did manage, barely, to graduate. Seeing no future other than the military, she sought to enlist, hoping that it would be a route to a steady paycheck and three squares. But military discipline did not suit her, and she would have dropped out had somebody not had the bright idea of sending the smart, but not well educated, and distinctly maverick woman to Rocky instead. Hopefully it would suit her better than the army...
