IC Date: Dec 4th, 2011 IC Time: Noon Lakeen had noticed her egg heavy green, Maria, seeming to be more restless than usual. Lakeen knew Maria would be clutching soon, but she surely hadn't expected it to be this soon. Lakeen woke to Maria humming in a pleased manner. She looked over and noticed that the green had clutched... In her dirty laundry basket. Lakeen groaned as she got out of bed, making sure not to wake Lakeesk, and pushed Maria out of the way. There were only three eggs here... Lakeen flipped through the rest of the basket, making sure there were no more eggs. There weren't. Lakeen sighed. At least there were not as many eggs this time around. The only part that sucked was that Lakeen was going to have to pester Maria to take care of her eggs. Again... Lakeen left her weyr, heading for the hatching sands. Maria was perched on her shoulder, not caring that Lakeen had taken her eggs. When she reached the hatching sands, Lakeen buried the eggs in the warm sands and commanded Maria to stay with them. Lakeen left the sands to the sad chirps of her green.

IC Date: Jan 1st, 2012 IC Time: Noon Maria started humming right around lunch time for the Weyr. She was feeling rather smug and happy, knowing that her eggs would hatch within a matter of moments. She sent an image of her meager clutch shaking in the sands. Lakeen was sleeping soundly in her weyr when she was roused by Maria. For a moment Lakeen thought the green flit had left her eggs, again, and needed to be reminded to care for them. But then she realized that Maria was not in her room, but with her clutch where she belonged. Lakeen then took stock of the image she had received. Was it really time for the eggs to hatch? Lakeen threw off her covers and raced to the dining room. She knew Faizah would be there, and knowing Faizah, she was probably carrying around the paperwork she needed for a Hatching. Lakeen knew she also had to let Lanrie know that her egg was going to hatch... Lakeen entered the dining room, sticking to the sides of the room so that no one would notice her. She finally made it to Faizah, who was seated on the outer rim of the dining hall. "Maria's eggs are hatching." She told Faizah as she passed, heading for the kitchen to prepare bowls of meat. Faizah nodded and stood up. "Anyone who wants to attend Green Maria's hatching, get your rear ends to the Hatching Sands!" Faizah called out to the enter dining hall before she turned and headed for the Sands herself. When Faizah reached the Hatching Sands, just a few moments before Lakeen who was laden with bowls of fresh chopped meat, she immediately noticed the eggs shaking violently. Faizah smiled. "Let's get this hatching going." Maria's ClutchEgg #1: M'aati - Brown Kenta (8c7700)Egg #2: Chance - Brown ? Alexandra had been making her way into the dining hall, thinking that it was about time she took a break from trying to learn everything she could about the dragons and get something to eat, just in time to hear Faziah shout out that there were firelizard eggs hatching.
"What do you say Keero?" She asked the young firelizard curled around her neck, his little claws hooked into her greatcoat. "Would you like a friend?" She certainly wouldn't mind another of his kind. Keero had proven to be rather useful, as well as a good source of companionship. The blue chirped, a sound which Alex thought was a positive one.
She trailed after Faziah, following the fiery haired weyrwoman onto the sands. The doctor peered curiously at the clutch, watching as the eggs rocked violently. She wasn't sure what to be expecting here. Keero's egg had been all on it's own when she'd found it. Would these eggs hatch the same way his had? And what would be coming out of them? She hadn't yet gotten to more than the most basic details on the genetics of these alien creatures with whom she now lived.
This was certainly an interesting way to be spending her first new years day here. Standing in the heated sands, watching a clutch of dragon like alien creatures hatch, and hoping to have one form an empathic bond with her. Some days Alex had trouble believing just how weird her life had become. ----------------- M'aati's arrival on the sands was somewhat more attention drawing. The young man hadn't been at the weyr long, and was still learning his way around his new home. He'd been late to lunch, arriving just in time to see the Weyrwoman disappearing off somewhere. The other folks in the dining hall were speaking loudly of a clutch of firelizard eggs which were hatching. M'aati, curious about this clutch, had decided that finding out about it was far more interesting than getting food.
He stumbled his first step onto the shifting ground of the sands, tripped over his own feet when he attempted to correct himself, and ended up falling onto his back. For a moment he lay there, dazed by the fall. Then he remembered why he was here and what he was doing and quickly scrambled to his feet. He looked at the little clutch, three eggs in all, and then looked over at Faziah.
"How does this work?" He asked the weyrwoman. "Do they all have owners already?" Back at home, by the time a clutch was ready to hatch, all the eggs would have already been handed out, usually to people the Weyrleadership wanted to curry favour with, or people with some kind of rank. If you were very lucky, there might be some left over after that which might get handed out by lottery. That was how he'd gotten Imel's egg.
At the thought of him, the two toned brown made an appearance, already humming as he circled down to land on M'aati's shoulder, his eyes whirling the colours of excitment.

Faizah turned to M'aati, listening closely to his question. She smiled when he was done. "Only one egg is claimed. Apparently no one else wanted an egg, so the other two are up to chance." She paused for a moment, her attention going to the clutch as the egg numbered with a red '2' cracked, but didn't hatch. She looked back over at M'aati. "Usually it's a first come, first serve thing. The owner of the flit gets to choose first, then it goes to whoever reserves one. You weren't here to reserve an egg for this clutch, but you're more than welcome to try to Impress one of the flits when it hatches."
Lakeen nodded as well at M'aati. She thought the boy looked excited, and she did hope one of the flits would find him to be a suitable friend.
The egg numbered '2' cracked again. Little chunks of shell flaked off, but the egg remained unhatched. Everyone seemed to be holding their breath, except the flits in attendance. Faizah's gold Reyna was there, as was the mother of the clutch green Maria. Alex's blue Keero was in attendance. And if Faizah wasn't mistaken, that was Nakia's flock that just came in from between...

D'mei had just entered the dining hall to grab some lunch when he heard Faizah sound the call to get to the Sands for the chance for a firelizard. Having been only a bluerider on Pern, he never really had much of a chance to Impress a flit.
And of course, he had always wanted one.
So, given a chance to Impress a firelizard, however minute depending on how many people showed up and how many eggs there were, he eagerly took it. Thoughts of food set aside, he hurried to the Sands, but paused once he looked at everyone there.
The newest comers were there, as was Faizah and another girl he didn't recognize. She was likely the owner of the flit who had lain the eggs, so she wasn't there for another flit. By he was sure the two newcomers were, and he wasn't sure about Faizah. He knew she had a gold firelizard, but he wasn't sure if she had any others or if she wanted any more.
Less certain than when he had entered, he continued toward the gathering around the eggs.

Faizah was about to greet D'mei when the first of the eggs hatched. With an explosion of shell fragments, the egg numbered '1' revealed a brown flit with darker brown stripes adorning it's body. It's eyes were whirling a furious shade of red as he fanned its wings to dry them. Faizah shoved a bowl of meat into both M'aati and D'mei's hands.
"Good luck." She muttered, taking a few steps back from the clutch. She began recording as much as she could about the hatched flitter. Lakeen also stepped back, not wanting to take the chance of Impressing another flit.
The brown glanced around, wondering what was going on. It heard a small and encouraging chirp from behind it. He glanced back and noticed his mother sitting next to the other two eggs. She chirped at him again. The little brown walked over to his mother, rubbing his small head along her jaw for a moment, then turned back to the two people watching. He sniffed the air. Whatever those people were holding, it smelled good!
The flit half ran and half flew over to the nearest person with a bowl of meat. With a leap and a bound it landed in M'aati's bowl, gingerly picking up small bits of meat before nearly swallowing them whole.

M'aati watched the small clutch closely, blue eyes completely focused on the small eggs. The weyrwoman had said that one of the eggs was claimed. That meant there were two unclaimed ones, two chances that he might impress a hatchling. All the eggs were rocking, he was puzzled for a moment by the numbers on their shells, until he realised that someone had probably drawn them on so that people could tell which eggs had been claimed and which eggs hadn't been.
The egg with the two on it's shell seemed to M'aati's eyes to be the closest to hatching. Little bits of shell were flaking off with every movement, the sides bulging, but the baby within not yet hatched. However, it was not the 'two' egg which hatched first, but the egg labelled with a 'one'. It shattered, bits of shell going every which way, a little brown body sitting among the wreckage.
M'aati smiled as he looked at the baby. He was a handsome fellow with his dark brown stripes. The bowl of meat shoved into his hands startled M'aati, his eyes wide as he looked up at Faizah. Oh, right, He'd need something to feed them if he wanted to get ones of the babies to come to him. The green rider gave the weyrwoman a grateful smile. He hadn't thought to grab anything while he was in the dining hall. Turning his attention back to the brown, he smiled as he watched the little flit interacting with it's mother. So very cute.
He was completely unprepared of the flit to turn and half fly, half jump up to perch on the edge of the bowl he was holding. He staggered back slightly, all his attention focused on the little male now eating from the bowl. "That's it little fellow" M'aati encouraged the brown, carefully picking up some of the meat and holding it out to the hatchling. "Eat as much as you want"

The little brown flit looked up at the sound of M'aati's voice. He cocked his head to this side, looking at the meat in M'aati's hand. With a chirp the brown took a few pieces from the weyrling's hand. He looked up at M'aati with eyes swirling rainbow, chirping again. Egg #1 Kind yet Jealous Looks to M'aati Marks of #6A633B #8C7700

M'aati smiled as the little brown took the meat from his hands. "That's it little lad" The brown looked up at him, and in that moment their eyes met, M'aati knew the flitter was his. "Eat up" he encouraged the flit, now feeling how hungry the little guy was.
You got another one... Herath didn't sound pleased with this fact. Oh shush Nylath told her sister I think he's rather cute You would M'aati, what are you going to name him? There was a pause in the sisters bickering as they both awaited the answer. I was thinking Kenta He replied. I like it Nylath said. I suppose it will do That was as close to an approval as Herath was likely to give.
"Your name is Kenta" M'aati told the firelizard. The newly dubbed Kenta looked up at him, chirped and went back to eating, seemingly content with his new moniker.

D'mei smiled slightly at the little brown who had launched himself at the bowl in the other boy's hands. He didn't know the newcomer, and he made a note to seek him out later to find out his name.
Then he looked to the remaining two eggs, hoping just one of them would find him suitable. He just hoped the little firelizard wouldn't be as timid as Rometh usually was...

Lakeen smiled as the little brown Impressed. She wondered what the other two eggs held, and she wondered where Lanrie was. She had claimed one of the eggs, and surely she had become aware that the hatching was happening... So where was the girl?
Faizah wasn't worried. Things would work out one way or another. She was amazed at how handsome the little brown was. She smiled at M'aati as he continued to feed it.
Just then the egg labeled with the number '3' started cracking. Lakeen held her breath, knowing that was Lanrie's egg. But what could she do if the flit hatched before Lanrie arrived...?
She breathed a sigh of relief as, in the next moment, the egg stopped cracking. It continued to shake, however.

D'mei watched as the egg labeled with a red '3' started to crack, and the blonde woman near the mother of the clutch tense up slightly. He cocked his head to the side, then realized the egg must have been claimed and the claimant must not have been there.
He didn't care what color he got, he just hoped he got a flirelizard. They were adorable little creatures...

As everyone's attention was on the egg labeled with a '3', the egg labeled with a '2' hatched with a spray of egg shells. Standing where the egg had been was a little brown, another one anyway. This brown was a slightly dark medium brown without any markings. With a shriek it started to flap its wings to dry them, but was already headed for the bowl of meat someone held. It smelled delicious! The little brown couldn't resist. It used what it could to climb up the man's leg and sit himself in the bowl of meat D'mei held. D'mei's attention snapped to the other egg at the sound of a shell splintering, watching as the brown that emerged shrieked and lunged toward...him.
He jumped slightly as they hatchling started clambering up to the bowl in his hand, the hatchling talons creating minute scratches. The hatchling then proceeded to grab some of the chunks of meat in the bowl, gobbling the meat down.
"Don't eat too much too fast, little guy," D'mei muttered, helping the little brown and handing him some of the meat. "What should I name you, eh...?"

Lanrie's eyes flew open suddenly. The redhead knew as soon as she woke that she'd overslept today. And, of course, Snith hadn't deined to wake her up.
I guess I should have, right Mine, but you were snoring. It was funny. The green paused as Lanrie sat up in bed, rollig her eyes at Snith. Althouh I think there's somewhere you're meant to be this morning. Lanrie looked confused. Apparently the littl-green-flitt's eggs, one of which I'm pretty sure you reserved, are hatching at this very moment. "What?!" Lanrie exclaime,d leaping out of bed. She ran aorund the room, getting dressed, and tore out of there. Since impressing Snith she hadn't been nearly as nervous around the Weyr, but she still blushed, embarassed, as she ran in.
"Shards, I'm sorry! Snith didn't wake me up like normal so I kinda.. overslept." Lanrie said, breathless, as she came over. That's when she realized two of the firelizards had already hatched and impressed. "Ah... Oh well, there's still one left..." She murmered, noticing that eg number 3's occupant had impressed to D'mei. Lanrie moved closer, looking at egg #2. There were, of course, a few other people around and there was no guarantee who would impress...

((Getting this hatching over and done with! Lol.)) Faizah and Lakeen greeted Lanrie as she reached the sands, handing her a bowl of meat. And it was in the red haired girls hands just in time. The third egg, the egg that Lanrie had asked for, was cracking. Small croons were coming from the egg, before it finally hatched. Another brown flit stood there, a flake of shell resting between his headknobs as he looked around. Seeing his brown brothers at the other bowls of meat, this brown decided to go to the only open bowl. With a croon he start airing his wings as he walked towards Lanrie and her bowl of meat. Climbing up the weyrling, using her clothes to cling to, he finally made it to the bowl. The little brown practically dove into the meat in his hunger. But after his first mouthful he looked up at the human holding the bowl, his eyes swirling with rainbow colors. Lanrie smiled thanks and took the bowl of meet, turning back to the egg she'd chosen, one with a 3 o nthe front. It started crackin and Lanrie watched it, excited. She'd impressed peli the green, and snith, but every new hatching was as enrapturing to her. The baby inside was crooning and Lanrie felt a smile flit onto her face again. And then a brown hatched, and she giggled at his funny little hat ,a small piece of shell stuck betwee his headknobs. The brown was airing his wings and lanrie waited ot see what he would do. Hopefully, come to her. She shook the little bowl of meat slightly. And the brown flitter walked towards her and then climbed up her body, using her clothes to hold on wit his tiny claws. "Hey there, little guy..." She said softly, trying not ot wriggle as his claws tickled her. And to Lanrie's amusement, th eflitt almsot literally dove headfirst into the bowl. Laughing, Lanrie looked down at him and felt her smile widen. After a moment of chewing and swallowing, the brown looked up at Lanrie and by the rainbows in his eyes, the green weyrling knew she'd impressed. SShe reached out and scratched him lightly between the headknobs.
"I'll name you Snuggles." Lanrie decided, blushing a little at the silly name. But it fit, as the affectionate brown rubbed his head against her hand before turning back to his food with a croon.
