History: Marcus was born in a small town called Reedsport, in the wilderness state of Oregon. Hardly wealthy, he went to the only school(s) in the district, lived a fairly unspecial life, and, as a man like him was prone to do, skipped town as soon as he graduated.
No one really blamed the kid; he was smart and his dark skin stuck out like a sore thumb. He had all the makings of a basketball star, with strength, skill, and speed. But if he stayed, he would just be another fisherman in a town full of them.
His folks knew betterthan that.
He managed to get acepted into a small community college, working on getting a degree in business. He felt suffocated though, and left for the military about three months into his classes. He joined the army, and was in basic training when he found the egg.
It hatched the night he found it, while he was in the barracks. And, being the very opinionated young manhe was, he went first to the doctor, who contacted the battalion commander, who explained what was going on. By his eighteenth birthday, he had been 'reassigned' to Pern, at Ista Weyr.
When the unexpected Gold clutch was laid on Earth sands, Chance immediately petitioned to go back to his home world, but was refused on the grounds that there were enough Candidates there already. However, the Weyrleaders quickly changed their minds when, after two Gold Hatchings left no Candidates for the two Green hatchings that had been laid.
He was among those chosen to go back to Earth.
