IC Date: June 16, 2012 IC Time: 10:37 AM The pains had first started deep in the dark of night, and it was a pain that made even hardy Reya whimper and cry out. For, as easy as her pregnancy had been, her labor was a long and arduous one. Young Reyask didn't understand what was making Hers hurt, and was growling futiley at any who were near the laboring redhead. This unexplained pain had finally driven the normally docile white wher to action, and only Reya's silent order kept the small wher from leaping at the midwife, doctor and couple nurses that swarmed around her. Even brown Till was humbled by the pain that radiated across their empathic link, and he sat perched on the headboard, crooning supportively. Of course, with Reya, swearing in her native Italian was to be expected, and she did not disappoint. Feral growls often accompanied the contractions, and a bout of hissed and occassionally shouted string of cursing was never far off. But finally, it was over. The doctor had forbid even Kain from entering once it was evident there could possibly be complications in Reya's already painful labor, but now that it was over, and the baby lay wailing in the midwife's arms, he would be free to enter. "A little girl. Congratulations," the midwife announced. Now given her child, Reya was startled to see how much she looked like Kain. What little hair decorated the tiny baby's head was already as black as Kain's, and her complexion was definitely darker than Reya's fair skin. She looked to the door, waiting for Kain to come striding in before discussing a name with him. Reyask, curious as this new creature who filled the air with wailing and Reya's heart with pride and joy, rested her front paws on the edge of the bed and leaned in to sniff the little human-hatchling. What that, Mine?[/color] Reya smiled at Reyask. "It's my baby, Reyask. Just like you're still a baby, when it comes to whers." Then Reya smiled down at the baby. "Piccola mia."

Kain had been pacing outside the Infirmiry room, where Reya was in active labor, grumbling all the while. He had come as soon as he had been informed of Reya's labor, but the doctor had barred his entrance. It had been explained that Reya was having a troublesome delivery. Kain's skin had crawled at the same time his heart dropped into his stomach.
But he hadn't moved from where he had been pacing. The entire time he hoped that Reya would be alright, that everything would work out. By the time he heard the cries of a baby, Kain was almost reduced to hysterics. He was trembling as he entered the room, his eyes coming to rest on Reya. She was holding a small bundle wrapped in pink.
He sighed silently in relief. "A girl?" He asked, coming to stand next to Reya on the other side. He didn't want to bother Reyask from her perch.

Reya looked up from the squirming bundle in her arms and nodded. "See how much she looks like you?" she asked, shifting so Kain could see their daughter. And, almost as if sensing both parents were nearby now, the baby finally opened her eyes, revealing them to be a piercing emerald akin to Reya's.
Reyask hopped down from her side of the bed, and curled up at the bedside. The wher set her head down and dozed, but she was still tense and ready to leap up to Hers defense if anyone threatened her. Or the human-hatchling in her arms.
"Also, we need to start talking names. How do we want to name her? Pernese style or an Earth name?" she added.

Kain smiled, just as surprised as Reya to see how much the little girl looked like him. When she revealed the color of her eyes, a piercing emerald color, he was even more surprised. It was almost as if someone had punched him a good one in the stomach. But he kept his smile, happy that both Reya and the baby were healthy and strong.
He laughed when Reya brought up names. "I think Earthian. Neither of us are Pernese, nor are we on Pern, so I don't think a Pernese name would be a good idea." He said, taking a seat next to the bed.
((Sorry for short post.))

((Sorry for late reply.))
Reya chuckled slightly. "Just to be difficult, I want a Pernese name," she joked, but then shook her head. "Ah, who am I kidding, Pernese names are far too complicated to deal with right now. A nap would be great, but I know I'm needed elsewhere now," she said, watching their daughter before looking over to Kain.
"What do you think of Cristina for a first name? It's very Italian, and it just...seems to fit her." Then she looked back down to the baby in her arms, who had stopped crying, though she was still wriggling. "You're awfully quiet for a newborn, piccola mia," she murmured.

Kain mulled over the name. It was a pretty name, and it did indeed seem to fit the newborn. Kain's smile just got bigger as he watched mother and daughter together. He nodded to Reya.
"Cristina is a perfect name for her." He said happily.
He watched his daughter, Cristina, wiggle in her mother's arms. She had stopped crying, but was still wiggling about. Kain laughed slightly. "She is quiet, especially for a newborn." He agreed in a soft voice.
Kain continued to watch them for a few more moments. Then he looked at Reya nervously. "Do you think I could hold her?" Kain asked hesitantly.

"Of course. She's your daughter too," Reya said, scooting slightly closer to Kain with a small wince. "Here, cradle your arms and I'll hand her to you. Just, mind to hold her head."
Waiting for him to get himself situated, she glanced back up at him. "So, I took away the fun of the first name, so how about you chose her middle name? And...whose surname is she inheriting?" It was a valid concern, considering they hadn't discussed it before Cristina's birth.
But with Reya wanting to keep her child's gender a secret until birth, names would have been harder to discuss. And her decision was made because she felt a child's gender was one of life's remaining true surprises, and it was one she didn't want to ruin.

Kain moved to cradle his arms, just like Reya was. He was using the sight of her holding Cristina to judge how he should hold his arms. He frowned when he noticed her wince, watching her with caution.
"Are you sure? You're acting like you're in a lot of pain..." Kain muttered.
Then Reya's words punctured his thoughts. She wanted him to choose their daughter's middle name? The only thing he could think of was his mother's middle name, Taylor. But somehow Cristina Taylor just didn't sound right.
He shrugged. "Unless you like Taylor as a middle name, I can't think of any. And I think she should have your surname." Kain told her, almost shyly.

Reya watched as Kain nervously cradled his arms, then started to carefully deposit Cristina into his arms, smiling slightly. "Heh? Oh, I'm fine. Just been a rough couple of hours; they think it was back labor. I'll be fine in a couple days," she said.
Then she looked carefully at him after mentioning Taylor. "She must have meant a lot to you. Otherwise you'd be able to think of others. Who is she?"

Kain leaned back, holding Cristina close. He didn't want to drop her, and he felt better about holding her when she was closer to his body. He knew how babies could squirm, and he didn't want to be taken off guard with her.
He nodded at Reya, but was watching Cristina. "It was my mother's middle name." He answered her, quietly. He wondered what his family was doing right then, wondered how his brothers and sisters were doing.
He wondered if he should phone them, tell them about their new granddaughter. But then he would have to explain about Reya, and that would be difficult without explaining about Gorth and Rocky. Kain sighed slightly, know he wasn't allowed to do that...

Reya smiled slightly when he mentioned it was his mother's middle name, then said, "Cristina Taylor Poliziano it is, then. Her name is a mix of cultures, just as she is." She watched as he sat with their daughter, who was squirming slightly.
She shifted again, hiding another wince, trying to find a comfortable position. While he was wondering about his family, she herself thought about her brothers and parents, wondering how they were and what they were up to now. And how they might react if they learned they had a new member of the family.
Her eyes found Kain's, and she said softly, "You must miss them...Your family, I mean. I miss mine. I haven't seen mine in years..."

Kain nodded slightly. "I miss my mother the most. My brothers, not so much. I love my sisters, but I do not miss their constant bickering." He laughed slightly, his eyes still on Cristina.
He glanced at Reya for a moment, his smile never wavering. "What was your family like?" He asked. He was truely curious. They would be Cristina's family too, now, and he wondered if they were a close family...

"I never had any sisters. I was the only girl out of four, and the youngest to boot. My older and younger brothers are almost mirror images of each other, and obviously true Irish boys. Ginger hair, blue eyes and accents to boot. My middle brother was...he was a fruit, and my best friend growing up. My mama was a traditional housewife; thankfully, I could trade places with my brother about the time I was old enough for grade school. Working in the house was not my cup o' tea. Out on the farm wasn't where he wanted to be. My papa was a farmer. We would barely get by some years, but with three tough kids helping him, we always pulled through."
She laughed slightly. "Sorry, amore mio. You didn't ask for a condensed life story. My bad," she said. "But, I miss them. Haven't talked to them since before I left for Pern. They knew about the dragons. They tolerated Till, wherever that little demon went to. And when N'ton showed up, they were all outside. 'Twas the most amusing day of my life so far."

Kain laughed, a hearty laugh that might have startled Cristina. "I bet it was interesting!" He thought back to when he had found Hobbs and such.
"I had my own place, with Aurora, when we found the flit eggs. And we were actually out camping when F'nor found us. That was fun to see a black bear run from a tree when that brown landed!" He grinned, rememebering the day with ease.

Indeed it did startle Cristina, who had been starting to fall asleep. When Kain laughed, she jumped slightly, then started whining miserably and squirming again, flailing her little limbs.
"Oh, piccola mia, did your papa scare you?" Reya crooned, reaching over to the little girl. "It's all right, your mama is here."
She chuckled. "Black bears aren't the ones to worry about. But I can see why it would be funny." Then she looked up to Kain, a slightly confused look on her face. "Aurora...The Isle Weyrwoman?"

Kain nodded, rocking Cristina slightly to try to calm her. "Yeah. Aurora and I have been friends since childhood. We dated for a while, before going to Pern." He explained.
Kain turned his attention back to Cristina. He rocked her, at the same time making slight shushing sounds. It had always worked for his mom with his youngest brother. Which was the only sibling Kain remembered as a baby. Which wasn't surprising, considering Kain had only three younger siblings, and four older. All older sisters...

Cristina continued to whine for a couple minutes before finally settling back down, her squirming reducing to a little flail of her infant limbs. Giving a huge yawn, she started to fall asleep again.
Reya also knew how to comfort an unhappy infant, having plenty of experience with younger nieces, nephews, and cousins, but for now, she had a hunch Kain would need to take care of her. For a few days, anyway, until they let her out of the infirmary. "Do you miss her?" she asked quietly.

Kain smiled as Cristina began to fall back asleep. She was such a cute baby. And now the man understood why his mother had insisted all her children were cute as babies. It was indeed true.
Kain looked up at Reya when she spoke. He thought about it for a moment, then shrugged. "Not really. We talk a lot still, but she's obsessed with Isle now. And I've learned that she is a bit too hyper for me anymore. Woman doesn't sit still..." He muttered with a slight smile.
He remembered her last visit. It had been interesting, and when she had finally returned to Isle, Kain was worn out. He had forgotten how much energy she had, even when camping and hiking and such. He shook his head. "Aurora is still a good friend, but I don't believe we could be anything more than that." He explained.
