Okay, so some of you might be familiar with this, some might not, but Red is a HUGE fan of the 'His Dark Materials' series. (Golden Compass, Subtle Knife, and the Amber Spyglass, as titles individually.)
I also have a bad habit of writing my characters into HDM-verse AUs. Which mainly involves me plotting out the Daemon names and shapes of all my characters. ANYWAY. Basically, a Daemon is a small magical creature-thing that is, essentially, the outward reflection of a person's soul. It IS their soul. And they settle in a final form which basically reflects on that human's adult self...
*Daemons, by the way, still hold to the HDM canon, so yeah, mostly 'real' creatures, shapeshifting until their human counterpart hits puberty/'grows up', generally the opposite gender of their human, can;t stray more than a few yards without causing pain; their final 'shapes' they 'settle' in are generally representations of the type of person their human is. Ie, Humans with dog daemons tend to be workers or servants, large-breed dogs being hard laborers, while smaller breeds may fit butlers or maids. Human with cat daemons are often intelligent or clever, those with large-breed working animals more stubborn or strong, bird-daemons represent flight, strength, individuality or more depending on species, and so on. Daemons can be almost any creature, though pity on the human who is bound to a fish-shaped daemon- they have no choice but to follow their soul, essentially.
Humans are born with Daemons, it's taboo to touch another person's daemon (though in cases of lovers, or possibly even a parent/child relationship, particularly while the child is quite young, it may happen.) Another person touching your Daemon is generally going to send feelings of disgust or revulsion through you.
Daemons speak aloud, and yes, everyone can hear them. One can also instinctively tell the difference between a daemon and a so-called 'normal' animal.

* Loyal, Strong, protective, Energetic, Headstrong, Friendly, Loving (Still debating. Any type of large dog, methinks...)

* Mysterious, Alluring, Small, Swift, Silent, Pretty, Clever, A Predator, Associated with Night and magic,
Gideon - Cifer - F - Jewel Wasp (If settled at all?)
* Beautiful, deadly, parasitic, dangerous, small, Clever,
K'vai - Lula - F - Persian Cat
* Snooty, Self-absorbed, Pretty, pampered, Stereotyped often but not always holding to assumptions, Fickle, a little bit ugly on the surface

* Vain, Loud, Cocky, Aggressive, needs control,

* Strange, startling, surrounded by myths and stories, secretive, hard to keep track of, hard to pin down, 'odd',
