Mentari managed to find Faizah in the Dining Hall. Faizah was looking over some paperwork as she also ate what looked like a grilled cheese sandwhich. Mentari sighed. She really didn't want to disturb Faizah. But Tad was right. Faizah did need to know that she was pregnant, and about her and Tad's question.
Which might be just as awkward to ask... Weyr traditions said that they shouldn't marry, but Mentari really wanted to marry Tad. She loved Tad.
Mentari paused as that thought hit her mind. She loved Tad. She loved Tad? When had that happened, she had to wonder. She hadn't admitted it to herself, but Mentari knew that it was true. She did love Tad. And know she understood a little better why she wanted to marry him.
Faizah suddenly looked up, sensing that she was being watched somehow. She smiled as she noticed Mentari. The girl, her youngest sister, was always welcome. Even if Faizah was in the middle of something, like now. But Faizah could see that something was bothering Mentari. With a frown, Faizah asked what it was.
"What's wrong?"

Tad, for his part, couldn't help but hang back a little. Given the great respect Mentari had for her older sister...almost more what one might feel for a mother...if Faizah disapproved?
Well. Faizah could not take the child away from them now. He wouldn't let her get between him and Mentari, either, Weyrwoman or no. Even if she said they had to abide by Pernese tradition, there was nothing saying they could not live as *if* they were married. Except his family...but then. He could lie to them.
Yeah. That might end up being for the best. For right now, though? He was hovering at the edges, rather like a spying firelizard, Cobweb perched on his shoulder.

Mentari paled a little, nervous. She took a deep breath before she spoke. "I have to tell you something... And ask a question." She said in a rush.
Faizah nodded, moving her paperwork to the side. "Have a seat, kiddo. What's on your mind?" She asked, her brow furrowed. Mentari was acting strange, and Faizah was getting a little worried. Then she noticed Tad standing behind Mentari, his white flit adorning his shoulder. Faizah gave him a small but welcome smile. "You can sit as well Tad. I'm not going to bite anyone's head off." She laughed at the end of it.
Mentari smiled, the knot in her stomach easing a little. She shouldn't have been worried. Faizah was a calm person, and she next to never flew off the wall. Surely Faizah would be happy for them, after she overcame her worry...

Tad honestly looked exactly like he was afraid she would do just that. Or maybe feed him to Surth.
Despite that, the young man moved to sit down. The white did not move from his shoulder, wrapping his tail around his neck gently. He was quite the handsome looking firelizard...and pretty much knew it, too.
He was going to let Mentari do the talking, though. She knew Faizah. She would know how to explain this to her in a way that wouldn't make her mad, surely. If he spoke he would just blurt out the entire thing bluntly, without even thinking about how he said it or what order he put things in.
Best that Mentari did it.

Mentari was glad that Tad sat with them. She was still nervous about telling Faizah, but she noticed that Tad looked worse than she felt...
Mentari took a deep breath before she started talking. "You know Ladeth flew recently, and that Kimath won..."
Mentari paused. Faizah nodded, smiling softly. "You're pregnant?" She asked. Mentari nodded, and Faizah smiled a little more at the girl. It was partially Faizah's fault. She had been so busy lately that she hadn't asked Mentari to go on birth control, even though she had known that Ladeth would fly at any time.
Faizah wasn't upset. Babies were good, and she knew that Mentari would be a good mother. "Is that what you were worried about?" Faizah asked softly.
Mentari nodded. "But there is something else too..." She said. Mentari glanced down at the table for a moment. This was the hardest part. She didn't want to hear Faizah tell her they couldn't get married...

"We've gotten really close..." A pause. "And I can't tell my family about this unless we're going to get married. They'd never understand."
The dragon thing, the Pernese customs that surrounded them. The knowledge that Mentari could never be entirely faithful to him or he to her. He suspected that was why it was frowned on for riders to marry...indeed, he could think of no other reason. But it didn't change anything. He loved her...and he never wanted to be parted from her. He would learn to handle flights. Kimath would, no doubt, chase other greens, possibly try his hand with the smaller chimeras.
Mentari was the only one he wanted when there was *no* dragonlust involved. "And I...love Mentari." Hard to admit to a third party.

Faizah listened carefully. She had seen the growing bond between Mentari and Tad, and it would be a bold faced lie if she said she didn't agree. But marriage? Wasn't that taking it just a little far, a little fast...?
She looked at Mentari, whose head had snapped to Tad when he said he loved her. She was smiling, and it looked like she was holding back from hugging him. But Faizah could see that Mentari loved Tad just as much as he loved her. Which was rare indeed. Faizah couldn't help but smile at them.
"Marriage in a Weyr would be difficult." Faizah said first.
Mentari looked back at Faizah. "We know. Dragons are not monogamous." She said. She sounded a little less nervous and a lot happier too.
Tad had said he loved her! Mentari couldn't help but smile. She leaned over to him, whispering in his ear. "I love you too, Tad."

"We know that. And we'll understand if you think we shouldn't do it...or shouldn't do it yet. But there's a kid."
A kid who deserved to know all of his family...which would not happen if Tad's relatives found out he had got a girl pregnant and *not* married her. What an...awkward situation. Of course, he could... "I suppose I could gloss over things with my family...not tell them everything."
It was awkward. But he knew he couldn't explain to them about his Kimath without permission. If he couldn't explain to them about his Mentari as well...that would just make things so hard.

Faizah shook her head. "I'm not saying that. I'm just saying that's why it usually doesn't happen in a Weyr." She said. She thought about it for a moment. She knew they were young, and when people that young usually tried to convince themselves that they could deal with anything as long as they could be together. But she doubted her little sister was that delusional.
"As long as the two of you think you can handle the flights and the results. And since we're on Earth, not many would frown on it..." She paused for a moment.
Mentari decided to speak up. "I want to do what mom didn't. I want the baby to know it's father..." She said.
Faizah nodded. She could understand that logic. None of them knew there father... Faizah nodded. "I don't have a problem with it. And there is no rule against it." She said.

"Whatever happens, this kid's going to know me." Tad was firm on that. The only reason the kid wouldn't would be if something happened to him.
He wasn't going to NOT be a father...he knew what many men were like. They vanished, leaving their womenfolk holding the literal baby. Did they need a piece of paper to prove it? He knew he wanted one.
"I won't ever walk out on Mentari and her kids." But what if he sired others, as the result of flights and dragonlust he could not control? Now he began to understand why riders generally did not marry...

Faizah nodded. "I'm glad to hear you say that. But here is one of the biggest questions." Faizah paused for a moment, thinking about how she should phrase this. She figured putting it bluntly would be the best thing.
"What will you do if you sire other children? Or if Mentari conceives with another man's child?" She asked.
Mentari froze, her face paleing as the blood left her face. She hadn't thought about that. She hadn't thought that it would be possible for her to conceive another man's child. And now she understood why marriage didn't happen in a Weyr.
And now she was doubting that they should get married...

Tad let out a breath. "That's why riders don't get married. It's about the kids..." And he knew it might happen, as horrible as it might be. But what, then, was doing the right thing?
He knew he loved her, he knew he wanted, at the very least, to combine living quarters...and he knew other riders who had done that.
"I don't know. I don't know what to do." He slipped an arm around Mentari, fully aware of her distress, but with the dragons, it...it was part of what he had signed up for. He had to accept that...and now, perhaps, he had to accept that as much as he wanted, right now, Mentari to be his and his alone, it simply could not work that way.

Mentari leaned against Tad for a moment, after he wrapped his arm around her. She felt about ready to cry. Even though she knew that she wouldn't care if Tad fathered other children due to flights. But what if he did mind if she ever conceived another man's child...?
An idea hit her. "I'll go on birth control. And then I can marry Tad, and we won't have to worry about me having another man's kid." Mentari said aloud, sitting up straight.
Faizahlooked over at Tad. This was his to answer. If he could deal with that, then Faizah wouldn't stand in the way. In fact, she would stand behind them during it.

"That's your choice. You could always go off it if we do want another one, and time it...I know it can take a few months, though." He considered that.
He could handle that answer, but he also felt that was, truly, Mentari's choice. For as traditional as his family was, Tad did believe in a woman's right to choose whether or not to have children. He wasn't sure about abortion, but birth control? That was perfectly fine by him. Besides, it wasn't good for a woman to have too many kids too close together.
He kept his arm around her, letting her rest against him. Appreciating the quiet warmth of her presence. She was the only woman he wanted, even if he knew that he could never be faithful. Then, he added. "And any children you have, I'd consider mine, even if there was doubt over the fatherhood. If it was from a flight with somebody else, we wouldn't know for sure without a paternity test anyway...and we could just not do one. Unless the other guy got pushy about it, in which case..."
Tad could handle himself...not that he would start a physical fight over it, but...

Faizah nodded, smiling. "That sounds good. But its up to the two of you whether you want to marry or not. If so, I will sign the papers for you, Mentari." Faizah nodded.
Mentari smiled back at her sister. This had gone better than she thought it would, and she was glad. She might be able to marry Tad after all. And that thought made Mentari very happy. She looked over at Tad. "So what are we doing?" She asked.
((Sorry for short post.))
