Loren had grown to hate being pregnant.
No. That wasn't fair. She hated not being able to maneuver, hated the fact that her back kept whining at her and as of late she hadn't even been able to ride Woruth. Which, of course, was frustrating the blue as much as it was his rider.
And today her back was complaining even more than usual...culminating in a sharp stabbing pain.
Mine!
Ow...oh. Great.
Count. She counted...and yes, there came another one. It was time to get herself to the infirmary.
Woruth. Please ask Taspoloth to let La'as know that the baby is coming, although from what I know, it will be a while.
First labor was supposed to be the hardest, and she knew she should get to the infirmary before it got any worse. But she also knew it would likely be a few hours. At least she knew she wasn't having twins.
She had, however, asked the doctor not to tell her the sex. There was something about knowing in advance that felt...unlucky. Nor had she decided on a name. Not until she saw her baby...which would not be all that long now.
The fit young woman made her way to the infirmary, although she gasped as she entered, an even stronger contraction taking her.

La'as had been spending the day working on repairing some of his riding straps. He was so absorbed in the chore that he didn't hear Taspoloth until she had poked her head into his side of the weyr. She snarled at him, which is the only reason she got his attention.
"What is your problem?" He asked her, setting down the strap he had been working on.
Woruth tells me that the baby is coming. His wants you to be there. She growled at him before disappearing back to her side.
La'as blinked for a moment, not comprehending what the green had said. Then, with a muttered curse, he jumped to his feet. Loren was in labor; she was about to bring their child into the world. La'as hurried to get to the Infirmary.
He wouldn't miss this...
He arrived right about the time she did. He hurried over to her, wondering if she needed any help. At the same time, he wasn't entirely sure how to ask if she needed help either. Instead he decided to head to the front desk, where the nurses were. He banged impatiently at the window.
"Having a baby out here! Can we get a Healer?" He called out to them.

OOC: Is anyone bringing in a healer or should I post again?

La'as' shout got an answering one from within, "Second!"
Labor was not something there was any sense rushing to, after all. "Relax. It'll be all night, likely." Not that Loren wanted to think about that. The contractions were, after all, rather painful and it would get worse before it got better. She wasn't worried about danger to herself or the child. She was strong, she had done all of her prenatal exercises, and she had reasonably decent hips. As long as the child wasn't too huge, which it didn't seem to be. She stayed on her feet for now, steadying herself against a nearby chair as the doctor came out.
"Ah yes. How often are they coming..."
Loren was not able to answer *that*, thanks to another contraction that flowed through her, much more painful than the ones that had been, she realized, niggling at her for a while. She almost fell.
It had to really be coming now...and she leaned against the chair, waiting for it to pass. "Five...minutes..." she managed, finally, as the pain subsided.

La'as had moved to stand beside Loren, even as the most recent contraction hit her. He laid one hand on her elbow, letting her know he was there if she wanted to lean on him. He grimaced slightly at her contraction, glad he wasn't a woman. He knew that labor was often painful, but many women thought it worth the pain.
He was beginning to get excited. He would soon see his child. Soon, he would be a father. And he simply couldn't wait. He never thought it would happen, but here he was. About to be a father.

"Okay...yes, you're well into transition, I think. Let's take a look."
The doctor moved to support Loren's other side, helping the bluerider into one of the infirmary rooms. "You may want to wait outside. It's up to you. Some men handle being in the birthing room well...and some faint."
Loren shot La'as a smile. She didn't care what he decided, but she definitely wanted this baby *out*. Breathe, she told herself. Breathe. And if she could manage without an epidural, she would. She'd heard one too many horror stories. Woruth? She sent a querying thought to her blue. He was upset and worried, but not panicking or anything. She must have explained it to him enough times to stick in even a blue dragon's memory.

La'as paused, considering his options. On Pern, he would have stayed outside. It was not a man's place to be there while a woman gave birth. But he wasn't on Pern. He was on Earth, and apparently it wasn't unusual for a man to be there when his child was born.
He nodded to the doctor. "I'm going to stay. If I can't handle it, I'll take myself outside." He answered.

"Not my problem if you faint, then." The doctor moved to help Loren into the room. "Let's keep you on your feet for a few more minutes. It makes it easier."
Loren let out a breath...and then gasped. Were the contractions even closer together now? Either way, the baby wanted out and she wasn't about to argue with it.
Him. Her. She almost wished she HAD asked which the child was, had asked to see, but it was too late now. There was no point asking for that to be pulled when she would be holding the child in a few very long hours.
A few *very* long hours, and she hoped those that told her it blurred afterwards and was not well remembered were right. Either way...they called it labor for a reason. This was going to be really hard work.

La'as smiled and nodded in acknowledgement, then continued to help the doctor assist Loren. He glanced at her, a bit worried, when she let out a gasp. He could only imagine what she was going through at that moment...
Again, he came to the thought that he was glad that he was NOT a woman.

Hours passed...but although the labor was long, it went well, with no complications. It was well into the next morning, though, before it was all over and Loren held her child in her arms. A girl.
She had light, almost amber colored skin and black hair and might well be a looker in a few years, but right now she looked like any other newborn...kind of wrinkled and tired. And Loren...just kind of lay there exhausted, looking at her. She knew there was something she was supposed to do before she let herself sleep for a week, which is what she felt like doing, but she couldn't quite get her mind around what she had to do. Other than stare at her little girl as if she had never seen a baby before in her life.

La'as had stayed by Loren's side the entire time. He was slightly uncertain once the true labor began. But he didn't leave. He was determined to stay with her every step of the way. And while it was a long time before their child was born, it was well worth the wait.
La'as grinned down at her as she held their child. A daughter, with caramal colored skin and beautiful black hair. She had yet to reveal to her parents what color her eyes were, but La'as was patient. He glanced up at Loren, who looked exhausted. Well, no wonder. She had done all the work, and he had seen today that it wasn't called labor for no reason.
"You alright?" He asked softly.

"I thought I'd know what to call her when I saw her, but I'm still working on it." It was her own fault for not picking names sooner...Loren knew that, but it was far too late to fix that now.
"I was thinking an L name, though. Not..." She yawned. "...sure about this Pernese combining name thing, but if we use an L name that sort of recognizes both of us."
Latasha or Latonya? Nah...too African-American invented for her and, of course, all variations on Laura were out. Leah might work...or... "Lynn, maybe? Or is that too simple?"
La'as was the father, after all. He deserved a say in the matter. Of course, if he wanted to do the Pernese thing...what had his original name been? She had no clue and was too tired to care.

La'as nodded, thinking about it. Names were obviously a big thing about having a baby. And they could often be very difficult to choose. Especially if they kept to the Pernese tradition of naming. Personally, he didn't much care whether the beautiful baby girl Loren was holding was named with the Pernese tradition or Earthian tradition.
She was talking about naming still. He caught her mention of not being sure about the Pernese way of naming. He didn't blame her. It was a difficult thing to grasp. La'as really didn't fully understand it, and he was Pernese!
Then, he had never thought to have a child, either. Not that he regretted this little girl. She was a pleasant surprise. He turned to look at Loren when she mentioned a name. "Lynn?" He asked, thinking it over.
It was a simple name. But perhaps simple names were best. There was certainly nothing wrong with a simple name. But at the same time, La'as thought perhaps a unique name was best. He shrugged at Loren.
"Lynn sounds like a good name. Is it common on Earth?" He asked, still looking down at the baby girl.

Loren hrmed."It's pretty common, which is why I hesitate, but I like it."
And La'as did, so it seemed likely that the kid would end up stuck with it. It wasn't like she was a boy, whom Loren would have felt obligated to give a two syllable name in case he Impressed and decided to follow the Pernese name shortening tradition. Not that many of the Earth-born riders had done so.
She wondered what would happen if a girl did it. Would the Pernese see that as a horrible violation of tradition? She could have made herself L'ren, but...nah. She liked her name the way it was.

La'as nodded. "I like it to." He smiled at Loren, then glanced down once more at the precious baby. "Lynn." He whispered to her.
He didn't know what else to do. Loren would probably go to sleep soon. She certainly looked exhausted. And the baby, Lynn he guessed, would probably be given to the nurses to watch while Loren slept. And he would... He would be lost. He really didn't know what the fathers did at this point.
