Soon, another voice would enter the world of the Earthian Weyrs. Soon, a child would scream her first hellos to the unsuspecting world. Soon, a woman would lose everything and gain nothing but nuisance.
At least, that was how Alex felt.
She had seriously thought about an abortion. She had nearly gone through with it, too, but something had made her stop. It did not help that she had for some idiothic reason told her parents what the matter was. Yes, thier beautiful, perfect adopted daughter was very much pregnant. Oh, how they had bombarded her with e-mails and calls and even letters concernig visits and the new life growing within her. It did not help, too, that Kain was being so damned supportive.
You should have done it, my love, Eturynth hissed. Than you wouldn't be in such a disgusting mess. The Green had become increasingly sour since her own children had hatched. At least you don't have to care for your own children. They hatch and they are gone away from you, Alex responded dryly.
And so she sat, and thought, of what she would do. She could do what Nakia had done and dump the babe on someone. Yet she was fairly certain that would not work. Alex knew, and knew well, that would never happen. She was, for all intents and purposes, imprisoned in a cage of her own reluctant responsibilities.
((Baby is a girl because 1) you didn't respond to pm and 2) so many of the boomed babies are boys.))

((I never got a PM from you concerning the baby...))
Kain walked into the common room, looking for Alex. He knew she had been quite upset lately, and while he was trying his damnedest to be supportive, he knew it was only upsetting her more. It was needless to say that the Weyrleader was out of his wits.
But he was trying! He wasn't going to give up. Alex was carrying his child, and he didn't want her to struggle through this alone. She had chosen to keep it, after all, and that meant something to Kain. So he was here, looking for Alex.
He managed to find her sitting by herself. He kneeled down beside her, but remained silent.

((Oops...sorry....Connection must have kicked the bucket when I had pressed hend....My bad!))
Alex looked away from Kain, face losing all expression as he entered the room. He was perhaps one of the last people she wished to see, but she was not going to send him away from her now. It was obvious the Weyrleader had been looking around for her. Now that he had, she had no right to force him to leave. It was not as if she had the power to do so, anyway.
Alex, as she had only slimming clothing, had taken to temporarily wearing t-shirts and form-fitting, if stretchy, sweatpants. She hadn't been able to wear her own clothes in several months. She felt disgusted with how she looked, and was rarely seen outside of her rooms nowadays. Not even Bastet or Venus were ever seen. Alex felt they would 'tell' everyone.
Alex glanced over at Kain. He looked slightly exasperated, and no wonder. She had really put him through a loop lately. He had been trying hard, and she just had pushed him away.
"What is it that you want this time, Kain?" she sighed finally. "Did you come to yell at me for being an idiot, or to tell me not to mope, or what?" She turned her head to him, eyes flinty.

Kain sighed. He could already tell that Alex was in a bad mood, and that talking to her was going to be difficult at best. He really hated it when she was in such a sour mood, which was often now of days. But he was going to try his damnedest.
"I came to see how you were feeling. And to tell you the crib and some other supplies for the baby were in, if you wanted them moved to your weyr." He explained.
At first he hadn't been sure that he should order the baby supplies. But as Alex had progressed in her pregnancy he had gone and ordered them anyway. She was far past the stage of abortion, and from the looks of things she would be keeping the baby. So either way he looked at it, ordering a crib and such things wasn't going to hurt anyone.
"Really, Alex. Are you feeling alright?" He asked her.

"I'm fine. Couldn't possibly be any better" she growled. It was all too obvious that she was lying through her teeth, but she didn't seem inclined to give him the satisfaction of hearing the truth of how she truly felt at the moment.
"One way or another it'll end up in there. So why do you bother asking me? I don't have any choice in the matter. Just a word for the wise: don't go in there while Eturynth is in there."
Her eyes glittered angrilly as she listened to Kain's question. "As if you don't already know how I'm feeling, Kain. As if it isn't obvious. Take a wild guess, Weyrleader! You just might be smart enough to figure it out!"

Kain sighed again, this time with more exasperation. His patience was really running thin. He didn't know what to do anymore. She fought him every chance she got, and he was starting to wonder why she hadn't aborted.
He kept his cool, though. If only by a thread. "Assuming things makes an ass out of you and me. That's why I ask, Alex. And I'll have it moved in the next time Eturynth isn't in the weyr. Does that make you happy, Alex?" He asked her.
Okay, so his voice had been a little more harsh than he had wanted it to be. But after dealing with her bad mood for nearly nine months, and being as civil as he could be, he was growing tired of it. He understood she didn't feel well, no woman did when pregnant. But did she need to be so miserable about it? It's not like they had planned to have a child together...

Oh, how thin was the thread that held his calm face! How he struggled to hold his temper in check! How his voice could barely contain his annoyance and anger!
Eturynth and Alex had made a type of a game surrounding the Weyrleader. Months ago, they had begun to attempt to make him lose his temper with Alex. It was more of the Green's game than anything, and Alex just went along, not really caring. Eturynth had begun to push things into Alex's mind that she couldn't help but say and tried to forsee what Kain's reaction would be. Again, the girl just shrugged and went along with all of it.
Alex stretched her arms, accidentaly/on-purpose catching Kain in the chin as she slowly threw her arms wide. Hard eyes half-lidded, she smirked as she watched his reaction.
"Oh, I'm not sure Kain...Does that make me happy? What do you think, love?" she asked him, voice honey sweet.

Kain took the knock to the chin, but he turned away from Alex afterwards. If she kept this up, Kain was tempted to slap her in retaliation. But he stilled his hand. Instead he did the next thing that came to mind. And it brought a smile to his face.
He turned back to Alex. "Keep it up, and I will take custody of that child." He threatened.
It was probably the only thing that he could threaten her with. And it seemed like a very good idea at the time. In fact, he was pretty sure he could do it. Why shouldn't he, if Alex was going to act like this? It was within his rights, as the father of the child.
Granted, they would probably have to go through a very specialized court hearing. Not many knew about the dragons, and certainly no judges. But that didn't stop Kain. He had found something he could do about this situation, and he was going to stick it!
"What do you think of that, weyrling." He asked, putting an emphasis on her lower ranking.

Alex's smirk died as he threatened to take away the baby. Despite everything, despite her hatred and Eturynth's harsh promptings, despite her family, despite everything, she had fought to keep her alive and with her. Her maternal instinct, or whatever one wanted to call, must have kicked in somewhere along the way, because she was not letting anything happen to her baby.
After a moment of conflicting desires across her fair face, her golden eyes began to almost glow and a smile spread across her face.
"Be my guest, Weyrleader. Take the brat. I'll be glad not to have to take care of it." She peered over at his face, smile growing wider. "Oh, come on, that doesn't bother you? Me not telling if it's a boy or girl? I do know; found out ages ago, it seems."
She leaned back, arms folded before her. Her eyes glittered with malicious laughter. She knew he thought he had backed her into a'corner in order to force her to be 'nicer'. But what he had really done was give her a way out of her worst nightmare.

Kain almost lost his smile, but held onto it. He would be damned if he let Alex win this one. And it seemed he had struck a chord. Alex lost her grin, and for a moment several emotions played across her face. But then she started smiling again, and that was when Kain almost lost his own smile.
He laughed when she finished talking, however. She thought him not knowing the gender was bothering him? Not in the slightest, and he was going to let her know it. "I could care less if it's a boy or girl, Alex. As long as the baby is healthy, it doesn't bother me the gender."
He took a moment to try to figure out what to say next. Alex was a confusing person, and he couldn't tell if she really didn't want the kid or if she did. He really couldn't figure it out. She seemed like the kind of girl that would hate to be tied down by a kid.
A lot like Nakia...
Kain's smile grew. "I don't think you really want me to take the baby from you. I just think you don't want to have to take care of it." He said, his voice dropping in pitch with his conviction.
