IC Date: March 16th, 2012 IC Time: Predawn Humming. Unbroken, quiet but building in intensity. There were only two clutches on the Sands, and only one was hatching. Dulchanth watched with pleased, excited eyes as her eggs began rocking, and sat tall behind them. A'jax had been awake for some time, and she didn't have to call to him for him to hear her take up the hum of a hatching. He was already on his way. But there was one other she wanted there. Reaching out, she called, Kyrinth! Come, our eggs are hatching! With a burst of light, A'jax came running out of the kitchens, having gathered the cooks to start cutting meat for the hatchlings. He ran over to Dulchanth, taking a look at the eggs and laughing, a little out of breath. He had run from their weyr to the kitchens after hearing the low, steady thrum. And as the Weyr was startled awake by the sound, more voices were joining the chorus. The man still found the sound an invigorating one, reminding him of when he had Impressed his beautiful green, his other half. A thought stuck him, and he slapped his forehead. "Savana! She would want to be here, and she's already mad at me for leaving her at Isle. Could you...?" Of course, MineSoul.Kiranth, Mine requests Yours to be here. If there are any candidates, bring them as well. Green Dulchanth x Brown Kyrinth 7 eggs 3 Dud eggs Brown Raveath Impresses to Benjamin LaVotte Blue Perfaegath Impresses to Jovan Pandora Green Lorayeth Impresses to F'sol (ANPC) White Stith Impresses to Codi Varennikov
Candidates Standing ---
--- Kiranth and Savana both had just finished eating when Dulchanth's call came. Savana snorted slightly once Kiranth relayed the message. "Now the bastard wants me to come to Rocky...We'll go, but I don't know if there are any candidates after Xenith's hatching..." She paused and thought it over. "Come to think of it, there aren't. We barely had enough for Xenith's small clutch..." That said, she quickly got Kiranth's riding gear on and tightened, then clambered up and situated herself. "Alright, Kiranth, let's go. To Rocky!" she grinned, sharing the cooridnates with her beloved brown. --- Dulchanth was certain that by this time, the Weyr was stirring as the hum was picked up by other dragons. Candidates! Hurry to the Sands, my eggs are hatching! she announced, keeping the smallest egg closest to her, wrapping her tail lovingly in front of it.

Faizah shook her cousin awake, which had always been hard. The boy slept like a rock... "Jovan, get your rear end up. The hatching is starting." She said to him.
All the other candidates, including the boy that had literally just arrived, were already up and getting ready. She could hear them running around.
Jovan blinked up at his cousin, leaning above him and whispering something about a hatching. He sighed. There was no hatching...
"Hatching!" He heard another candidate exclaim.
Jovan blinked again. That voice didn't sound familiar. But now that he was listening, he could hear the humming of dragons and firelizards alike. With a muttered curse Jovan sprung up, knocking heads with Faizah.
Both counsins sank onto the bed, holding their heads. "Ow..." Faizah muttered to herself. She had had a headache to begin with...
A muttered curse signaled Jovan thinking the same thing. But again he sprung up, a moment later, and began getting dressed. "When did the eggs start hatching?" He asked in a hurry.
Faizah shook her head, still holding it. "They haven't yet. But they're shaking." She explained. With another muttering of 'ow' Faizah got up and left the candidate barracks. She knew Jovan would get there eventually.
---
Benjamin had literally just arrived. The Weyrwoman, a red haired lady a little older than himself riding a huge white dragon, had showne him to the candidate barracks. And just as she had bid him a good rest, Jondalar had started humming. The gold flit on the Weyrwoman's shoulder had as well, and Faizah sighed before telling him the hatching had started.
Benjamin pulled the white robe over his head, doned the sandals he was so used to, and was out the door before Faizah had managed to get into her cousins room. Benjamin ran to the hatching grounds, following Jondalar. And by the time he arrived, he realized he was the first Candidate there. He grinned, stepping up to the green that was the mother, and bowed.

Kyrinth had been snatching a few hourse sleep when he heard the summons. At first, he just ignored them and repositioned his head so that it was covered by a foreleg, his tail, and a wing. He was tired and he was sleeping away an emotional strain. Not that sleep really helped. Whenever he closed his eyes, he saw eggs. Eggs, eggs, and more eggs. Gold eggs, Green eggs, Wher eggs, chicken eggs, every type of eggs that there where in the two worlds.
HisLyrah enjoyed peeking in on his egg dreams. It was funny, she said.
But no matter. He was sleeping, finally, a dreamless sleep.
Kyrinth, wake up, blast you! someone schreeched as something thudded off of his shoulder. He snorted, lazilly openning one bleary eye so peer futilely at dark shadows. He prodded his thoughts toward the creature.
I'm trying to sleep, LyrahMine.... he groaned, prepaing to turn over.
Fine. I'll tell Dulchanth that you don't care about her Clutch and its Hatching.
His eyes burst open. Finally, her summons registered. Come on, come on! Hurry up! he grumbled impatiently as his Rider climbed onto his shoulders, laughing. As soon as she was seated, and maybe even before that, he was leaping into the air and was off into the sky, carefully navigating the path of wind to the Sands.
Lyrah leapt off as soon as he touched down so that he could go stand with his mate. She jogged up to the Green and her Rider, grinning a meaningful grin as she met A'jax's eyes. Ha! her grin said. I told you they'd Hatch!

A'jax grinned back at Lyrah, nodding a false grudging nod. His violet eyes, though, held a smile as surely as the grin on his face. "The only thing I'm worried about are the general lack of candidates...He's the only one to show up so far, and I don't think there are many others after all of the other clutches hatching. Xenith's clutch hatched not long after Dulchanth clutched, and with the gold clutch here..." he muttered to her, glancing at Benjamin, then back to Lyrah. "I don't want any of the dragonets going between...Though I think there are a couple more coming from Pern shortly."
Dulchanth crooned at Kyrinth, shifting over slightly so he could sidle up next to her. Hello, Kyrinth, she purred, sitting proudly over her--their--eggs. The largest egg of the clutch was rocking strongly, so she assumed that would be the first of their children to hatch, but sometimes it was the unexpected egg that cracked first.

Jovan was ushered quickly onto the sands by Faizah, who then promptly went to the stands to watch the hatching. Jovan watched his cousin retreat, then stepped up to the two dragons. The mother was a green, one of two colors the females came in, while the father was a brown. Jovan liked the browns. They were the best of both worlds between bronze and blue.
Jovan bowed to the green and brown dragons, then went to stand next to the other candidate there. Vaguely he wondered if they were the only ones there to Stand...?

Lyrah smiled gently. "I'm sure all those that hatch will Impress," she said warmly. She genuinely liked A'jax and his Green. They were a couple that was perhaps semi-opposites of herself and Kyrinth. "Savana will be here, right? Fron what I hear, you two are fairly close." Even there, they were semi-opposites. She had a single brother who cared about her, but they weren't overly close.
Kaena appeared above her, trilling a welcome toward Kyrinth and Dulchanth. Snowfire was soon to follow, zooming dangerously toward his human friend and crying piteously when he thudded into her side.
Kyrinth hummed, and a hint of satisfactional whirling in an eye proved his contentment. They are early, he mumbled to Lyrah privately as she soothed his worried thoughts. Why must they be early in their hatching, as they were in their clutching? It was dangerous.....

A'jax nodded. "Savana should be here any moment now. And hopefully, she'll have some candidates from Isle with her," he said, eyeing the two candidates who were now standing on the Sands. They had a significant chance of Impressing one of the seven hatchlings, but he was afraid the dragonets would be forced into a bond less than the perfect one due to the lack of choices in the candidates.
But, of course, the dragonets wouldn't bond to someone unless their mind was already in sync with theirs. That still left the chance of a dragonet going between because Theirs was not there. He dearly hoped none of the dragonets would pass from this world without a chance to live, because that would be a crushing blow to the Weyr.
Relax, Minesoul. All will be well, I can feel it, Dulchanth said to him, glancing over. His anxiety, she felt, was unfounded and it was upsetting him. This should be a time of celebration; for her, for him, and for the Weyr, for the line of dragons was continuing on for another generation, and surely that meant something.
-----
Not long after she was mentioned, Savana came from between astride her own brown. Kiranth quickly took up the hum that was reverberating thought the air, eyes whirling an excited blue. He alighted near the stands so Savana could chose her seat, then he landed on one of the ledges above, greeting Dulchanth, bonded to the brother of HisHeart and Kyrinth, the brown sire of the clutch.
Savana herself gave a nod in greeting to both A'jax and Lyrah, then looked up to where Kiranth had settled himself. A small smile crossed her face; it never took much to excite the brown, and as such, he kept her calm. It was ironic, that the excitement from the silly dragon should calm her, but it mattered not to her.
At that moment, Seiv came over from Isle himself before landed in Savana's lap, humming wildly. After receiving a gentle stroke from HisDualOne, he took to the air again, zooming about in the space above the two dragons, though he made sure to stay out of reach.
-----
Another dragon came from betwee, and Codi and a couple other candidates were ushered off of the back of the bronze and onto the Sands. A brown arrived shortly after with a few more candidates before they too were deposited in front of the eggs.
Codi, shy as she was, largely kept her face hidden by her silver hair. That said, however, she didn't hesitate to bow to the green mother and brown father of the clutch. She wanted to stand at this Hatching; but she also missed her brother already. But he wanted to try his hand at another Hatching on Pern, and she wouldn't argue with him. But she felt alone without his constant presence nearby.
The other candidates also bowed to the dam and sire of the clutch, chosing spots around the clutch to wait for the first of the dragonets to break shell. Including her and the two who were already there, there were now seven or eight candidates. Codi didn't know most of them; actually, she didn't know any of them, but she stifled her concern and instead watched the eggs intently, pleaded them to hatch and chose from amongst them.
They did not have to wait long for the first hatchling. With a loud crack, the egg closest to the standing candidates fell apart in a shower of eggshell, and the hatchling within tumbled onto the sand in a disorganized heap.
He was a cloudy, almost purple blue, with a bright blue stripe running from the bridge of his muzzle down to the middle of his tail. The little blue, who looked perfectly healthy despite his early clutching, made a huge show of looking around, looking at the dragons who were gathering on the ledges. When he went to climb to his feet, he tripped and fell over again, showering many of the gathered candidates with sand.
Codi felt the urge to go help the dragonet up, but she knew the dragon had to chose his own candidate. They couldn't force him to choose, clumsy though the blue was.

Benjamin clenched a fist to keep himself from going over to the hatchling. Like Codi, he wanted to go over there and help the blue to his feet. But he didn't dare. The dragonet had to make his own choice, and as much as Benjamin wanted to Impress that one, he wouldn't force it on the hatchling.
Instead he continued to watch, one eye on the clutch and one eye on the blue. He would get to his feet. Newborns were often clumsy, especially when trying to walk for the first time. He knew the blue would make a good match, and he knew there were plenty more eggs left...
---
Jovan wasn't as reserved as the others. He took a few steps forward, arms outreached to help the blue to his feet, but something zoomed past his head. It dived again at him, and he caught a glimpse of Reyna. Jovan was confused, and he wanted to reach the blue, but then Surth's voice was in his head.
Don't, Jovan. You have to wait for the hatchling to make his own choice. Surth told the zealous candidate.
Jovan stopped, looking over to where Surth was sitting and humming. He nodded slightly, but stayed where he was. If the blue still needed help in a few moments, Jovan would be there to help him...!

((Sorry for this taking so long, guys! Rocky kinda fell on the back burner with school and then work, but now I'm back and intend to get this hatching done and over with soon.)) The little blue looked up at the massive White as Surth reprimanded Jovan for trying to assist the clumsy hatchling, and then he looked to the boy who was scolded. J'van! There you are! There are lots of dragons around, did you know that? Rainbows lit up his eyes as he hopped up and tried to prance over to Jovan, but he tripped over his own feet again, tumbling through the sand and landing in a disoriented sprawl at the candidate's feet. Could you feed me now? Your Perfaegath is very hungry... --- Codi couldn't help but smile a little as the blue ecstatically greeted his newly found partner, appearing fine even though he continued to trip over his own four paws, Of course, newly hatched dragons tended to be rather clumsy, so she wasn't too worried about Perfaegath as he announced himself to the world; especially now that he had found His. But there were still eggs yet to hatch, and as Codi returned her attention to the clutch, another egg cracked open with a loud noise. Sitting in the wreckage of the egg was a pretty grass green dragonet, dark green boots taking up half of her legs. The little dragonet hopped up, taking a few shaky steps and glancing about before striding with confident legs to one of the candidates who had been brought along with Codi. The boy looked vaguely surprised as the little green nuzzled him lovingly, eyes swirling rainbow for a moment before they closed as the new green basked in the waves of love starting to radiate from the boy, who Codi vaguely remembered him introducing himself as Ferresol. Though she supposed now he'd be called F'sol. F'sol, I am Lorayeth. I can't express how delighted I am to finally be with you! I couldn't feel you before, but you're here now. It's all that matters, the little green purred. --- Blue Perfaegath (5a5789, stripe from nose to mid-tail 3692e8) 26 feet long when full grown Hyper, inattentive, clumsy Impresses to Jovan Pandora Green Lorayeth (6fcb2d, boots of 09610d) 24 feet long when full grown Graceful, loving, eloquent Impresses to NPC F'sol

Jovan was amazed when the blue started talking to him, calling him J'van. Then he broke out in a large smile. The blue was his. The blue, Perfaegath had chosen him! He bent at the waist to help the clumsy dragonet to his feet.
"Of course! There is plenty of food for you!" J'van told the blue enthusiastically.
Meanwhile, Benjamin was curious. He had seen the boy Impress the blue, and there was another boy that Impressed the newly hatched green as well. He had expected blues and greens, and they hadn't disappointed. But he wondered what else the eggs had to offer...?
He settled back on his heels, watching the hatching with an almost detached amusement. He was more curious about what would hatch next, rather than focusing on the crowd, the other candidates, or whether or not he would Impress.

The largest of the clutch was the next to hatch, though the egg at Dulchanth's feet was rocking strongly. A brown muzzle poked its way through the beige shell, forcing his head through the widening hole. The egg wobbled as he struggled before tipping over on its side, helping the brown escape by providing a series of hairline fractures. Crawling out of the egg, the brown, who was now revealed to be a pure, chocolate brown with a series of darker, muddier brown X's on the edges of his wings, which he had extended to let them dry. He looked over the candidates standing there, waiting for him to choose, but the frustrated growls and squeaks coming from the violently rocking egg had his attention more. Standing up, he turned from the candidates, carefully picking his way around the few other eggs left on the Sands, though they were now still. He paid them no attention, nudging the small egg once he reached it to see how much he would have to help. He then headbutted it, watching as a small crack formed. That should be enough to help, the brown said, before turning back toward the candidates. Mind already made up, he proudly picked his way over to the one he had picked, standing in front of the boy who was watching with what almost seemed to be disinterest. He nudged him, calling out to him. B'min. Sorry for turning on you, but I was needed elsewhere for a moment. You can call me Raveath, Mine.--- Codi smiled slightly as the brown came up to another one of the boys standing around the clutch, but the smile fell as she looked back at the clutch. Only one egg was shaking now, the one that the brown headbutted. Confusion had her tilting her head, but then a panicked voice was screaming in her head. CodiMine! Help me! I can't get out, no matter how hard I try! Her head snapped around a moment before staring at the rocking egg. "What...?" she muttered before lunging toward the egg. The mother green growled threateningly at her sudden movement, but then searing pain burned through her left arm, and she dropped to the sand with a scream. Codi writhed on the ground, clutching her arm before realizing the pain wasn't her own. Slamming her right fist in the soft sand, she crawled the remaining distance to the egg, tearing at the crack the brown had made. "Hold on, I'm here...!" she muttered, pausing only when she sliced her arm on a jagged piece of protruding shell. She hissed from the pain, but kept pulling at the slowly widening crack regardless. --- Brown Raveath (c15309 with X's of 6c2409 on wings) 32 feet long when full grown Courteous, refined, possessive Impressed to Benjamin LaVotte

Benjamin watched with curiosity as the newly hatched brown headbutted the egg. And then, one of the female candidates was running over to that same egg. It was the only one shaking anymore, and Benjamin wondered about the other eggs. He didn't have the chance to wonder long, however, as the brown started to strut towards him.
The brown nudged him, talking about being needed elsewhere. Benjamin nodded, smiling down at the brown. "Let's get you some food, shall we?" He asked. He reached down and started to gently rub Raveath's eyeridges.

More frustration washed over Codi as she realized no one was going to help her free the dragon trapped inside his shell, but instead of giving in to her desperation, she used it to fuel her desire to get the dragonet out. Completely uncaring about whatever injuries she had already sustained and was likely to continue to sustain, she tore at the egg, catching flashes of moving white inside the egg as light poured in. And finally, finally, the egg fell apart and a squirming hatchling fell out. Unfortunately, the tiny white also landed wrong, and held his front left leg to him with a shrill little squeal. Codi hissed slightly as the pain bled over the bond, which she didn't register until about now. Realizing the white had called her 'CodiMine' when he first called for help, she blinked. "Oh, little one. Are you alright?" she asked, leaning forward to inspect his oddly curled paw, trying to ignore the red she was smearing on his near white hide. I am fine, but you are not. Your Stith is worried about you, he crooned, yellow overpowering what was left of the Impression rainbows in his eyes. "Don't worry about me, little one. I'm tough." She didn't want to admit that her vision was starting to dance and double. "Let's go get you some food. I'll get myself taken care of once you're set, okay?" Stith was hesitant to agree. But he followed Codi in a limping stride as she climbed back onto her feet and started for the edge of the Sands. She didn't get much further than five or six steps, however, before she paused. She then sat down roughly, rolling over onto her side and curling into a ball after that. "I don't...feel so good, Stith..." she mumbled, covering her head with her bloody hands. ---

Faizah, while she had been watching the hatching, had not been watching closely. And she only just noticed the blood when the candidate, Codi, collapsed and curled into a ball. Faizah jumped to her feet, her eyes quickly scanning the sands for blood. She was ashamed she hadn't seen it before.
There was blood everywhere. On some of the egg fragments, on the sands from the egg to Codi, on the white dragonet. Faizah groaned, running from the stands towards Codi.
"I need Healers!" She yelled, sending the message to Reyna as well. If nothing else, the gold would be able to get one of the doctors over here.
As she reached Codi she tore the sleeve off her shirt. She grabbed hold of Codi's injured arm, muttering that she was trying to help, and tied the torn sleeve above the injury. She continued to explain what she was doing, that it should help decrease the blood loss. At the same time she scanned the sands, looking and wondering why the healers weren't there yet.

The remaining eggs were still; no scrabbling could be heard from inside the hard shells, no frustrated growls. Gray seeped into both Dulchanth's eyes and hide, and her head dropped a little. The Hatching was over so soon after it had begun, but it was a happy event touched with sorrow. Three duds, out of seven eggs. This was her first clutch, and yet so much had been lost in it...
But yet, there was joy. Four of the eggs had hatched, and she could take pride in them. She wouldn't be able to watch them as they grew, as she and Hersoul were to go back to Isle soon, but she knew they were in good hands now.
---
Codi pulled her arms from her face, or maybe someone else did..All she really knew at the moment was that she felt pretty weak, tired, confused, and panicked. Was the panic her own? No...it was Stith's. He was pacing and clawing frantically behind the redheaded woman who had pulled her arm away and had tied what looked to be a shirt sleeve around her arm. Instead of focusing on what was going on, she focused on calming Stith, not wanting him to hurt himself.
"Stith, little one, everything will be okay. I know it will..." she murmured to the scared white. At least...she hoped everything would turn out okay. The last thing she saw before passing out was a man...or maybe two or three...following a gold firelizard. The last thing she heard, though, was Stith's panicked squeal.

Kyrinth, like Dulchanth, watched with failing hope as one after another of his four children hatched and none of the other eggs even began to quiver with even the slightest movement. As the last egg hatched a small White, he went still. As the seconds ticked by and there was still no movement from the remaining eggs, his own head fell, eyes turning a poor, unhealthy looking grey and skin losing some of its warm luster.
Kyrinth spread one wing to gently cover the grieving mother as the humming of the dragons faded away. I am sorry, Dulchanth, he mumbled miserably.
