IC Date: January 12th, 2014 IC Time: Midnight Kumiko was in premature labor. She was scared, and for many reasons other than being in labor. The Earth had almost been destroyed recently, they were now in a different solar system, and there were already so many dead... The doctors were running around, trying to gather their supplies and such. A few of the doctors had been lost in the "move". That made Kumiko a bit nervous as well. Not that she should be focusing on everything that was already wrong. She should have been concentrating on trying to deliver her son. That's right. She would soon have a son. She hoped D'mei would be happy to see their child. Kumiko had become attached to the baby growing within her, and she wanted it to be healthy. She hadn't told D'mei that he would have a son soon, she had wanted to surprise him. But she thought now might be a good time to do so. So she reached out to Raynith, and asked the green dragon to tell D'mei where to find her and what was going on. Rometh. Mine wishes for yours to know that she is giving birth to Your's son. She is in the Infirmary. The green reached out and told the blue dragon.

D'mei had been helping with the repairs to the Weyr, not having the heart to help with the dead. However, when Kumiko summoned him, he had been getting some much needed sleep. When Rometh's mind brushed his own, the bluerider jerked up, looking around, confused and disoriented. "Rometh, what...?" he started, but the blue was already filling him in.
Kumiko was in labor? But wasn't it too soon for her to have the baby? And with Earth's technology being damaged during the black hole transfer... He was worried now. On Pern, early births were hard enough to recover from, but now, on Earth, everything had changed, and a premature birth could be disastrous without the superior technology to rely on.
Leaping out of his bed, he threw a shirt on before sprinting to the Infirmary, pushing past the few people that were out at this time of night. The birthing room may not have been the place for a man, but he didn't care. All he wanted was for Kumiko and the baby both to survive. As much as he was looking forward to being a father now, he knew nothing about raising children, and there was no way he could raise it alone. Though when was any Weyrborn raised alone?
The bluerider ran into the birthing room, and his heart sank. It didn't seem like her early labor was going well, and Earth's Healers were disorganized from Earth's relocation.

A nurse stopped when D'mei barged into the delivery room. She was carrying an armload of towels, but she stopped to give him a strange look. He was obviously Pernese, and seeing a Pernese in the delivery room was so out of the ordinary that she couldn't help but pause. When she finally came to her senses, her voice was more gruff than she expected.
"Who are you?" She practically growled.
Kumiko looked up, smiling when she saw D'mei there. "He is the father." She murmured weakly. She was exhausted and in pain, worried beyond belief, but she was glad to see D'mei there. Vaguely she wondered what he was doing in the delivery room.
A doctor's voice rang out above the noise of the nurses. "Someone get the gas generator from the storage closet!" He called out.

At the nurse's growled question, D'mei regretted coming into the birthing room and started to back for the door, but then Kumiko spotted him. Shards, she sounded weak... How long had she been in labor? He knew the longer labors created higher risks for both mother and child, but his knowledge of labor didn't extend much further than that.
Though the nurse didn't say whether he could leave or stay, D'mei advanced and knelt next to the bed, taking one of her hands in his. "Would you rather I stay, or should I go wait? I don't think there is much I can do here," he said quietly, his worry turning his brown eyes dark.

Kumiko shook her head. "I would rather you stay." She murmured softly.
((Sorry for the fail post. My muse has failed... Should I simply skip forward?))

((That might be best.))
D'mei nodded once, but he was unsure of what else he could do but be there by her side and stay out of the way of Earth's doctors. "Everything's going to be okay, Kumiko," he muttered to her. Everything had to be okay...

((Alright.))
Things had taken a turn for the worse. About an hour after D'mei had gotten there, the doctors and nurses seemed to begin losing their cool. They had managed to set up the generator, and one of the nurses was getting an incubator ready. Just in case they needed it, the doctor kept muttering.
D'mei had been pushed out of the way. Kumiko was eerily still, but there were the sounds of an infant. Small moans and weak sounding cries. There were nurses surrounding Kumiko, trying to get her stabilized. She was barely breathing and her pulse was dangerously low.

D'mei had moved out of the way, to allow the doctors and nurses to do everything they could to help Kumiko and their unborn child. As the hour progressed and Kumiko's condition worsened, he began trembling in the corner, uncertain of what it was that he could do raising a child alone. Sure, parents did it all the time, but he didn't know even the first things about raising a child.
But soon, even his isolated corner was still in the way once the sounds of the child hummed through the air. Even the infant sounded weak, and that terrified him more than anything else. A new life couldn't be snuffed out so soon...the child needed a chance to live. And Kumiko needed to be there to watch them grow! They had to help her...they had to...

An incessant beeping began to ring through the air. Doctors and nurses were attempting to get Kumiko's heart beating again, but to no avail. A few minutes later, and they were forced to give up. The doctor called time of death, and the nurses dejectedly moved away from the birthing bed. One of them had the sense of mind to cover the pale Kumiko with a sheet.
The infant, a boy with dark hair and dark eyes, was swathed in a blue blanket and sitting in the incubator. He was weak looking and pale even for a newborn. But he was alive.
