What had happened had amazed Tatsuya. Amazed and scared.
Something had caused it, and the boy was in the library. He could see no immediate, rational explanation, for Earth being pulled to Pern through a wormhole...which was what it had to bed. A black hole would have destroyed the planet, so it had to be a wormhole.
The young bronzerider sat amidst a pile of physics books, grumbling. It made no sense. Unless all the dragons going Between between Pern and Earth had altered the fabric of space-time or something. But if that was the case, then...something would have happened to Pern forever ago.
Choccheth, of course, had no opinion. Being a dragon, he was just glad to be alive and refusing to worry about past and future.
Being a dragon, he was starting to eye the females - definitely a young, healthy male, Tatsuya thought with amusement.
"Either I'm too stupid to get it or this all makes zero sense."

Tamahome walked into the library at that moment. He had intended to come in and get a few minutes to himself, to think. But to his surprise, he found the bronze weyrling, Tatsuya, sitting there with books surrouding him. He seemed to be trying to find the answer to something. Tamahome wasn't surprised. Everyone wanted answers lately, and most of them he couldn't answer...
"What are you looking for?" He asked curiously.
He probably startled the boy. Tamahome knew he should have let the kid know he was there before he had spoke. But the Weyrleader was tired, and he wasn't thinking straight. That was part of the reason he had come here to find some peace and quiet. Even Aurora was subdued lately, with two children counting on her and the Weyr looking for guidance. Tamahome sighed, his mind wandering to his own son.
He sleeps soundly, dreaming. Jackaloth said. The dragon had developed the habit of keeping mental tabs on the young boy. Probably because his rider was always thinking about him.

Tatsuya shook his head. "Trying to work out how what happened happened. It makes absolutely no sense," he informed the Weyrleader.
"Black holes tear apart anything that falls into them, so it can't have been a black hole. Theoretically there's such a thing as a wormhole. Which might relate to how dragons go Between, somehow."
He shook his head. "I suppose I should leave it for the boffins, but it's driving me absolutely crazy." There was an admission...but the Weyrleader was personable. Not like Aurora, whom Tatsuya did not like and would defy if his dragon would let him.
Tamahome was okay.

Tamahome nodded. "I wish I knew a physisist that would be able to better explain things. As it stands, I'm with you on the wormhole theory." He said, nodding towards Tatsuya.
But better to move things to another conversation. One that didn't baffle both of them, preferrably. And hopefully, with a change of subject, Tatsuya might relax a bit. They didn't need a proddy bronze weyrling because his rider was stressed. "How is your bronze holding up?" Tamahome asked.
It was a valid question. Some of the younger greens had started snapping because of all the stress. Inexperienced riders were having problems all over the place. And not just at Isle. The last message he had gotten from Faizah had assured him that it was happening at Rocky as well.

"He's on edge, but resolving it by trying to be the strong one and the big bad bronze." Tatsuya couldn't help but grin at that.
"We're managing." Tatsuya thought of his bronze, and was rewarded with a supportive sensation. The dragon was half asleep, but awake enough to give his rider to lean on. "He definitely fancies himself as something, but I'm told bronzes tend to be that way."
Bronzes were somewhat arrogant. Browns were more solid. Which might also reflect some of the key differences between the two riders - those that could not be put down to age and experience, that was.

Tamahome smirked with the boy. "Yes, bronzes tend to be that way. Your bronze seems to be a tad more laidback than other bronzes I've met, though. Which is appreciated." He murmured.
Jackaloth sent Tamahome a wave of contentment at the comment about Chocchath. The Weyrleader smiled slightly more, agreeing with his dragon. Jackaloth was old enough to know when another dragon was reliable and suitable. And in this crisis, they needed as many suitable riders and dragons as possible.
((Sorry if I misspelled his name.))

(( I can never remember how Choccheth's name is spelled myself! And I'm too lazy to look it up. ))
"He does seem to be. I'd say I'm happy with him, but he's my dragon, so I couldn't really not be."
Tatsuya let out a breath. "I wish we were old enough to do more work around here, but he's just not ready."
The bronze was growing well, but a long way from reliable in flight, let alone Betweening. He wondered how the rest of the planet was really reacting to this. At the Weyr they were somewhat cushioned...

Tamahome nodded in understanding. "Things are going to be difficult for a while. Sadly, the "move" caused a lot of damage. We were lucky, not being on the mainland." The Weyrleader explained.
The damage had been a big deal. There were next to no buildings still standing on the mainland, sadly. There were also few refugees coming to the surface. Most seemed to be hiding from everything and everyone. And according to Faizah, the same was true for Rocky. Vaguely he wondered what was goingt to happen...

Tatsuya nodded. "Well, the dragons probably aren't helping people come out. They aren't used to them. Of course, we could sort of use some of the old dragon myths...the problem is that our dragons don't look much like the mythological ones."
They looked more like the ones people in Europe used to believe in - horrible winged and scaled monsters who ate and/or seduced maidens, burned crops, stole cattle...yeah. Not something he wanted people thinking of Choccheth, at all.

Tamahome nodded in understanding. "That's true. And the Europeans have painted horrible reputations for their dragons." He muttered. ((Sorry for fail post. ))

"There's only one answer to that...seduce the kids." Tatsuya grins a bit. "Get them young and they'll realize that these dragons are friendly and appreciate being petted."
And there were always the firelizards. At the thought, Yin and Yang popped out of Between and settled, each to their favored shoulder. The blue twins were definitely cute...and might make good ambassadors for dragonkind. Start them with the small ones...

Tamahome blinked owlishly for a moment. Then burst into hysterical laughter. The way Tatsuya had said that was beyond remarkable. He doubled over in his laughter, tears leaking lightly from his vibrant blue eyes. After a few moments he stopped laughing.
He straightened and turned back to Tatsuya. "Sorry. But your wording there was epic." He murmured. Then he nodded. "But I agree with you. You certainly do have a point."

Tatsuya laughed. "I didn't mean like that..." Mimi appeared a moment later, realized there was no occupied shoulder...and settled to the table, from which she thoroughly scolded the blues.
Neither of them budged. "Firelizards," he grumbled affectionately. "Well, I'd be quite willing to donate any eggs Mimi might lay to the cause of improving weyr-Earth relations. She's only a green, but she might still provide a few.

Tamahome nodded. "It's all good. I knew what you meant." He smiled.
He nodded once more at Tatsuya's comment. "That's would be good. Not much we can do, though, until people come out of hiding." He explained.

Tatsuya nodded. "And they probably don't want to." He shook his head. "I'd probably be with them...not so much because I want to hide as because I wouldn't leave people alone to deal with this."
He considered that. "But the dragons would be useful for finding trapped people. So would whers." He didn't know much about the smaller, flightless dragons, but they apparently had a very, very good sense of smell. Like more intelligent dogs, in some ways.

Tamahome nodded. "Ther whers would be good for finding trapped people. On Pern they are used for tunnel work mostly. They see in thermal, have a good nose and do well without light. Only problem is that they are nocturnal, and can't truely fly." He said, explaining more for Tatsuya's sake than his own.

Tatsuya nodded. "Nocturnal's not always a flaw. Do we have any of them available to do SAR?"
He blushed a bit...he was a weyrling, he shouldn't be making suggestions to the Weyrleader. Somehow, though, he couldn't help it.
Maybe that was why Choccheth had chosen him. Because he made good suggestions. He'd learned that bronzes meant more than just absolute proof the man was straight...although he did wonder if a bronze would choose a homosexual if the man had every other quality the dragon sought.

Tamahome shrugged. "The problem with that is first getting as many out as we can. The last thing we need is someone panicing over seeing a wher in the middle of the night. No offense to those who like whers, but they aren't a pretty sight to many. Especially those that haven't ever seen one before." He explained.
He nodded to Tatsuya. "Nice suggestion though. You've got a sharp mind."

Tatsuya sighed. "You're right. They're pretty ugly creatures. With lots of teeth. Not that Choccheth doesn't have plenty of teeth, but..."
But he was at least an attractive creature. He glanced at Mimi, who was still perched on the desk looking daggers at Yin and Yang. "Sorry, girl. I can't grow an extra shoulder for you."
She just squawked at him. Not good enough!

Tamahome smiled at the disdain of the flitter. "It's amusing trying to keep several of them happy, isn't it?" He asked, nodding his head at the green.
((Sorry for epic fail...))

Tatsuya laughed. "And worse yet, they're *all from the same clutch*. The blues are twins."
He hadn't planned on three firelizards. It was just the way it had happened. "At least we can't end up with more than one dragon. One is definitely enough."
Although with all the mutations, that might happen...maybe even had and he didn't know about it. He didn't think so, though. Well...one could always avoid hatchings. Except Choccheth would never let him do that...

Tamahome shook his head. "I was there. I remember them. I have one of their siblings."
The Weyrleader shook his head once more. He remembered there being a weyrling at Rocky that had impressed more than one dragon. A'ir, he thought the name was. "There is a weyrling at Rocky with two dragons. Two chimeras from the same clutch, if my memory serves me right." He explained.
That would be a problem if dragons started double impressing often. Tamahome wondered how that boy even managed to get through the first few months of weyrlinghood. Caring for one dragonet was time consuming and hard enough. But two of them? And two that were the exact same age? That must have been much more difficult.

"I hope that's a one off. One dragon is bad enough. I suppose it wouldn't be too bad if they were greens, but then you'd have to handle double the proddy." Tatsuya mused on that. "And so you were. I've had a lot on my mind lately," the young bronzerider admitted.
"And important stuff. And stuff I probably shouldn't worry about until I've graduated, but I can't help it." Of course, maybe that was, after all, why the bronze had chosen him.

Tamahome shook his head. "This boy wasn't that lucky. One dragonet is a brown bronze mix while the other is a white blue mix." He explained. The Weyrleader supposed it wouldn't be too bad with the white mix. It was very likely the dragonet would never rise to chase. But a bronze brown was an interesting mixture, and he couldn't help but wonder how it would rank.
"I'm wondering if that brown bronze cross will dare to chase a Gold. Should be interesting to watch his development in the next few years." Tamahome continued.

Tatsuya considered. "Browns chase golds sometimes. It's catching them that's the problem. I'm figuring it will be up to the gold, in the end."
Golds were picky about their mates, seeking the largest possible clutches, which meant the larger bronzes. Nothing could be done about that, he thought, wryly. Dragon biology ruled over and informed the Weyr hierarchy.
