What was keeping S'tor awake at night was not various children. It was not his sort-of-weyrmate.
It was the Red Star. What could he do if Thread fell on Earth? He loved Ryath. Ryath was his lifemate, his dragon, the other half of his soul.
Ryath could never be trusted with firestone. He could maybe use a flamethrower like the queenriders, but how did he keep his dragon away from the stuff if it was in the Weyr?
He wasn't sure he could...and he didn't want to admit to anyone that he might be able to control his own dragon. Nobody admitted to that. Which was why S'tor, rider of brown Ryath, was sitting in a corner of the dining hall...
...getting quietly drunk.
Very drunk.
Very drunk indeed.

Faizah was trying to find something to do, to get her own mind off her own worries. She walked into the dining hall, and almost turned around and walked out again.
S'tor was drinking. And heavily, it would seem. The last thing Faizah wanted was to bother him, but something about the way he was sitting there made her pause. He seemed miserable, and she wasn't sure why. One would think he would be happy that the dragons wouldn't be a secret for much longer.
Of course, no one knew that yet. Faizah wanted to get everything here at Rocky straightened out before she told them there was no need for secrecy any longer.
She silently sighed as she watched S'tor. There was something that gave her the impression he needed someone to talk to. So she grabbed a soda from the cabinet, and took a seat across from S'tor.
"Want to talk about what's bothering you?" She asked, turning to the side so that she was more comfortable. Her baby bump was rather large, and she was already nervous considering she should have birthed almost two weeks ago.

"What if Thread falls here? We have dragons that were sent here for sharding good reasons." S'tor was too drunk to hold back from talking to the whiterider Weyrwomen.
"I can think of at least two that should never be allowed anywhere near firestone. And...one of them's Ryath." He let his shoulders slump. The reason why he and his brown had been exiled was not something he wanted to talk about, but even his thoughts were making the dragon perk up in hope. The rider's eyes rested on the very (very, poor woman) pregnant Weyrwoman. "It's not just that I can't give it to him. I can't trust him in the same WEYR with the stuff."

Faizah contemplated that for a few moments. Now that they sat right next to Pern, Thread was a viable concern. And one they would have to plan for, as well. She wondered what could be done about that. S'tor was right. Ryath and Crucith couldn't be trusted with firestone around. And it might take too long to find a suitable substitute if Thread fell.
"It seems the only thing we could do is use flamethrowers for Ryath. And we would have to just get the firestone from a Weyr on Pern, instead of keeping it here. But we don't even know if Thread will fall here." Faizah said, trying to ease S'tor's mind.

S'tor nodded. "I'm quite willing to learn to use a flamethrower...although I know they aren't as easy as some people think. We'd need them anyway. For ground crews, for the golds, and I'm not sure, but I think we have at least a couple of dragons who can't chew." A pause. "Non-queens, that is."
At least this would stop all the green clutches...well, except for Crucith. There was not much they could do with her. There was pretty much a guarantee *somebody* would die if they fed her firestone even once.

Faizah nodded. "Yes. Skirth, the black brown, can't chew. There are a few others that seem to be allergic to firestone." She murmured.
She wasn't sure what to do about it, though. Thread was something that she and the other Weyrleaders were going to have to talk about. Not to mention, if Thread did fall on Earth they would need more Weyrs. Which brought to mind the rescue attempts. Faizah wondered if S'tor had gone out yet to search for survivors and refugees.
She gave him a quizzical look. "Have you been rotated into the Search parties yet, S'tor?" She asked, in a possibly obvious attempt to distract him for a few moments.

S'tor shook his head. "Sort of. I go out tomorrow."
At least they wouldn't have to be secret any more. Except they'd have people wanting to be Candidates coming out of their ears.
"We're going to have a lot of wannabes out there," he noted. "Some of them might be suitable, but it's going to be hard to have to turn away the ones that just aren't sensitive to dragons. Or..."
Or morally unsuitable...some people might have the sensitivity but not the work ethic, or the ability to adjust to flights and Weyr life, or...

Faizah nodded in understanding. "Yeah. I don't look forward to that. Earth is full of wanna-be's. I'm just hopeing that after everything has happened, it will change. This is the planet's wake-up call, in my opinion." She muttered to herself.
She gave S'tor a small smirk. "Have fun. Wish I could join you guys. I would do anything to get into the skies right now. Sadly, I can't see where I'm walking, let alone the riding straps."

"You have to be due really soon, at least." That was another reason not to have women on fighting dragons, although S'tor didn't voice it.
Surth had to be losing condition, though, with his rider out of action.
"At least we might be able to fob some of the rider wannabes off in the "traditional" manner. Plenty of firelizards around. Should talk to some of the people with golds and even greens about distributing eggs more widely. Especially if we do have to deal with thread - flits might be too small to really fight it effectively, but they do make a good alarm system."
People would have to change their building habits, too. Earth had far too many wooden houses and barns...

Faizah nodded slightly. "I was due last week. Obviously this baby is in no hurry to be born." She murmured quietly.
It really was worrying her. Sure, Faizah knew that it was entirely normal to be up to two weeks late, it still worried her. A lot more than she would let on. It had been entirely too easy a pregnancy. And normally she would know if the baby was developing normally, if it was okay, if it was even alive. But thanks to the recent doom, she had no way of knowing. Other than the obvious moving she felt, there were no signs that the baby was unhealthy.
She sighed. Surth was antsy even more so than she was. He often went flying by himself, but even that was stressful on the two of them. Faizah longed to be in the air with her beloved dragon, but simply couldn't. Stress was leaking from both ends of the bond, and both Faizah and Surth seemed to be at their wits ends.
"I'm hoping this baby comes soon, though. I don't know how Nakia could handle having five of them moving about in there." She muttered, smiling slightly.
Faizah nodded at S'tor's musings. "Flits would work to keep some people calm. I'm more worried about how we're going to be able to feed the dragons and whers without help right now. There is game here in the mountains, but not enough to keep the dragons satisfied..." She murmured.

"Then we'll have to find somebody willing to help." On that front, Thread might help. "We're doing rescue work, we can do other work in return for getting food, even if we don't need to protect them from Thread. We can trade if we have to."
That was a bad admission from the traditionalist rider, but without Thread there was no reason to demand the traditional tithes...even if the earth people could be convinced of the necessity. He hated the idea of trading, always had, but what else could they do? Not much. Not unless the earth people could be convinced to support a Weyr full of dragons without understanding the need for them.

Faizah blinked in disbelief. Had she just heard that, and from S'tor of all people? She couldn't believe her own ears. And for a moment her expression probably gave that away.
Good thing he was drunk. He might not notice her expression. At least, perhaps not in time to catch it. Faizah quickly composed herself, then nodded. It was a shock to hear it come from S'tor, but he had a point. They could trade for what they needed. And there were going to be large farms of cows and chickens that wouldn't be able to function now. Without working machinery, the industrial farms would have to thin their herds and flocks.
Faizah grinned, nodding. Yes, for now they would be alright. They would find a way to make everything work. And by the time they would need assistance, things should be settled down in the rest of the world, so Rocky and Isle could trade for what they needed. They could use the novelty of being dragon riders to their advantage.
"You have a point, S'tor." Faizah said, smirking slightly at him. "I'm glad you're the Junior Weyrleader."

S'tor shook his head. "I don't want to go there, but we have to do what we have to do to survive, and it's not like...Lessa flatly turned down any of the "different" dragons going back to Pern, didn't she."
Which...would include Nakia's Isath. And he would not have gone back without her...not even if she begged him to save himself and Naktor. Besides, he couldn't pretend Ryath was normal. The brown looked normal, but he would give himself away very very quickly indeed...the brown was simply incorrigible.

Faizah shook her head. "Benden never got back to me. The other Weyr's were mostly willing to take only the healthy dragons. Southern was discussing taking the chimeras." She murmured.
Not that it would make any difference now. The doom was over, and Earth just had to rebuild itself. Which would be another difficult task in and of itself. Faizah heaved a long suffering sigh. She was already in over her head, and it seemed things just got worse day by day.

S'tor shook his head. "I suppose with all the people we would have had to leave to die a few more...but they are still dragons."
At least Southern might have taken Nakia and her children. He might at least have died knowing his son would grow up and have a chance of being a rider. "So...I am definitely willing to help with the rescue missions."
What else did you do with a dragon that couldn't chew firestone but search and rescue, after all.

Faizah nodded. "I will keep that in mind, S'tor. I think, for now though, you should attempt to get some rest. Tomorrow is going to be a long day." Faizah murmured calmingly.
((I'm out of muse for this...))
