Loren had suspected. Her period had not come on schedule and she hadn't made it to breakfast for several days.
But she had not wanted to go to the infirmary. Instead, she had sneaked into town and bought a pregnancy test. That way nobody else had to know until she was sure.
Positive. She'd even done it twice, just to be sure, knowing that false positives happened.
As the Pernese would say: Shard it. She didn't want a KID. She didn't want to be PREGNANT. And she hadn't had...
Which meant.
This was all Taspoloth's fault. The green who had let Woruth catch her ...and resulted in Loren having some very rampant, very enjoyable and VERY unprotected sex with her rider.
Well.
She knew she could slip into the infirmary and get an abortion without anyone ever being the wiser. It was so tempting, as she stared at those two little red lines.
But it was also a hideously *unfair* decision, and the quiet bluerider was nothing if not an honorable woman. It was unfair on the child. It was unfair on La'as. He was from Pern, he was tall with very attractive eyes...and rumor had it he was as gay as they came. No matter. This was his child.
She sighed. If La'as had a cell phone...and few of the Pernese born did...she sure as heck didn't know the number. And she didn't want to go searching the common areas for him.
Idiot! She was a dragonrider. And this was all Taspoloth's fault, the least the green could do was relay a message.
Woruth, lover, please tell Taspoloth I want to see that rider of hers. And stat.
Taspoloth. Could you please send your rider to my rider's weyr if he's free?
She mock-scowled at her dragon. Taspoloth doesn't deserve politeness
Woruth just snorted at her. If you want to blame a dragon, blame me
She rolled her eyes, then looked at the two little red lines again. Crap it...she was going to have to keep it, wasn't she.

Taspoloth was surprised to get a message from Woruth, to be sure. But she politely told him that she would send her rider, a purr in her tone. At the same time she turned her attention to her Rider, who was oiling the riding gear.
Mine... Woruth's rider wants to see you. She asks you come to her weyr. Taspoloth told La'as.
La'as looked up at Taspoloth's comment. He forked a brow at her, then went to wipe his hands off. "Did she say what for?" He asked.
It was rather unusual for anyone, really, to ask for him. Especially to ask him to come to their weyr. Not to mention it had been awkward between him and Loren since Tas's flight. But La'as mentally shrugged. If she wanted to talk, he would talk.
No. Just for you to come to her weyr.
La'as nodded, getting to his feet. "Could you tell Woruth to tell Loren that I'm on my way?" He asked.
He felt Taspoloth give her assent to carry on the message. Then he was out of his weyr and headed towards hers. Which he knew only because of his early explorations through the Weyr. He didn't know what this was all about, but he guessed he would know soon enough.
Woruth. Mine says he is on his way and to tell yours this.[/color]

Loren sighed. She glanced down at herself, making sure she was presentable and putting the used pregnancy test on her night stand.
She didn't generally invite people into her weyr. To be honest, she was not particularly close with anyone at Rocky except her dragon, but she was not prone to closeness.
La'as certainly wasn't on the list, but...shards. She rather hoped he *was* gay. It made him less likely to be one of those men who had to 'do the right thing' and move in with her. Which she didn't want any more than she wanted the baby.
But she was stuck with it. And really, there were worse fates. These days, people didn't put that much of a stigma on illegitimacy, although her dad would roll his eyes and tell her she should have been more careful.
Ha. She finally understood why there were so many 'flight brats' on Pern. It was dang hard to be careful when under the influence of a strong psychic aphrodisiac.
Okay. He was on his way. She made sure the door wasn't locked, then sat on the chair by her desk. Man.
This sucked. But it would work out in the long term, she was sure of it. Just as long as she didn't have two in there, like poor Mentari.

La'as had reached Loren's weyr, and instead of just walking in like some people would when expected, La'as knocked. He didn't know what this was about. The man was highly confused and didn't know what to think.
Tas was proving useless at this time as well. She refused to ask Woruth what was wrong with his rider. While La'as didn't usually do such a thing. But he felt like something bad was about to happen. Well, maybe not bad. But surely something that would throw him for a loop.

"Come in," came the slightly annoyed voice from within.
At least the *dragon* hadn't come over. It wasn't La'as' fault. It was emphatically Taspoleth's. And..maybe a little bit Woruth's, if she was going to be honest about it.
And timing. Seriously, how many times did a girl catch from one incident? Too many, probably...that was like the myth that you couldn't get pregnant your first time. Just luck. Bad luck, good luck, mixed luck, some kind of luck.
Hopefully her tone wouldn't scare the poor greenrider off...she sounded as growly as a broody gold.
A broody gold *wher*.

La'as was even more confused with Loren's broodiness. Had he done something to make her mad? And if so, what had he done? He didn't know, and while he wanted to know, he was almost afraid to know. Whatever made a woman mad was not something that a man usually wanted to know about.
Either way, he slowly opened the door and entered the weyr. He looked around, immediately noticing Loren. She didn't look happy in the slightest. Now La'as was really worried about what he had done to make her so mad. So, he decided he would ask.
"Did I do something, Loren?" He asked hesitantly.

"Sort of. I entirely blame your dragon, though." She glanced out towards where Woruth rested. "Even if mine does want to take responsibility."
Her lips twitched a little. "Seems I'm pregnant. And given you're the only guy I've slept with in, oh, several months, and even then I was taking precautions...I'm going to blame the *dragons*."
Flights. Oh, she'd known what she was signing up for and she was hardly a sexual prude, but really, she wasn't supposed to get knocked up. This was totally going to cramp her style. But it wasn't...quite...La'as' fault. Even if she wasn't entirely able to keep from being a little bit sour at him.

La'as was frozen to the spot, blinking slowly and owlishly. Loren was pregnant? And the baby was his? That was throwing him for a loop.
"Pregnant...?" He asked hesitantly.
How had he gotten a woman pregnant? Granted they had shared pleasure when her blue had caught Taspoloth, but he didn't think that would be it. Didn't it normally take more than one night for a woman to get pregnant? And weren't most of the women here at Rocky on birth control, the little pills that kept them from getting pregnant...?
"How?" La'as asked, still astonished.

"The usual way, I'd imagine. Contrary to popular myth, sometimes it just takes one time if the timing's right."
She wasn't at all embarrassed to talk about it. And no...she hadn't been taking birth control. Maybe she should have been...it would have prevented this situation, but the little pills tended to make her throw up every time she took them. She'd felt the precautions she was taking would be enough.
It hadn't occurred to her that she'd simply forget in the throes of dragonlust. "But definitely pregnant and I'm sorry, it sure ain't anyone else's." She couldn't tell whether he was happy, sad or just...bemused. Then again, wasn't that a normal reaction for a guy?

La'as nodded slightly as she explained. But he was too surprised to do anything else. He wasn't sure what he should do. What did a normal man do in this instance? He had no experience in this area. And it was obvious in the way he just stood there.
"What are you going to do?" He asked, his voice just barely above a whisper.
It was her choice, whether to keep it or not. It was not his decision, but if she asked him... He wanted to see the child. It was his, apparently, and now his curiosity was peaked. Even if she didn't want to raise it, surely there was someone here that would be willing to foster it? Surely...

"Keep it...I don't know whether I want to raise it or not, but I'm not aborting." Loren let out a breath. "It's not the kid's fault I wasn't planning on being a mother any time soon, after all."
Somebody would take it if she couldn't handle it herself, she knew that. Maybe she could. She wasn't sure. Wasn't certain. Right now, she really didn't know what to think. It was clear that La'as was going to be no help. He'd probably never been a father before, based off of the confused look on his face.
Well. They'd muddle through and he could have as much or as little to do with the kid as he wanted. *Loren* certainly wasn't one of those who thought a gay role model would make a kid gay or, for that matter, somebody who cared about such things.

((This is awkward... Poor La'as doesn't know what to do.))
La'as nodded. He was thankful that she wasn't going to abort. He didn't know what to do right now, but he wanted his child to have a chance. Any chance would be better than no chance...
((And please excuse my crappy post.))

Loren studied the young man for a long moment. She almost felt bad for him. He'd probably never thought about having children.
She had, what woman didn't, and she wasn't *entirely* focused on other girls. Just not right now, not yet, and certainly not without any planning!
"Maybe..." A pause. "You look like you need time to take this in and deal with it properly." She'd had a chance to take some. He hadn't...
And he looked completely, and totally, and utterly shellshocked. Poor guy.

La'as felt like he needed to take a few minutes and let it sink in. But before he did, he felt like he should tell Loren what he was feeling. He looked up at her, his minty green eyes full of emotion.
"Thank you, Loren. Thank you for giving our child a chance." He said quietly.

"Like I said. It's not the kid's fault."
Maybe he or she would grow up to ride a dragon. Or join the military. Or, heck, rebel completely and go be a fashion designer or something. But whoever he or she was going to be...
"Like you said. A chance."
A chance to be something. Loren was glad of her own chances. She would give the same to her son or daughter.

La'as nodded. If that was all that they would give the child, then atleast they gave it that much. It was more than some people gave their children. He gave Loren a small smile, then decided to try humor to make both of them feel better.
"At least it looks like Tas won't be laying any eggs. We don't have to worry about two pregnant females." He laughed awkwardly at the end.

Loren heh'd at that. "Probably a good thing. We don't need to be over-run with dragons."
The gold females had more reliable fertility, although both could (for whatever reason) be sterilized by giving them firestone. Of which they had none.
She was sure it could be found somewhere on Earth, though, if people looked hard enough.
One thing was for sure. After this...she was going on the blasted pill. Whether she really needed to or not.
