Tad surfaced in the middle of the lake, grinning at his dragon. Being a dragon of small brain, Kimath was completely unconcerned about anything other than, maybe, which green was about to rise next.
Tad liked him that way. It was refreshing to share time and headspace with somebody who was never unhappy. Even if he did have to explain things several...
He eeped as the dragon sent a wave of water towards him, causing him to vanish under the surface again. "Nice one, Kimath! You know I have no chance in a water flight?"
All he got in response was innocent thoughts as the blue prepared another volley...

Mentari was walking towards the lake, enjoying the thought of having a swim with her husband. Ladeth was napping on their ledge, and Faizah was watching the twins. She smiled as she reached the lake shore and saw Kimath essentially dunk Tad with a wave of water.
She waded in slowly, trying to sneak up on her husband. Things were starting to get good again at the Weyr. Things were still not working, but life had stabilized itself. That was a relief, in Mentari's opinion. Christopher and Nicole were zipping about somewhere, not that Mentari was really paying attention. It was more the fact that Christopher kept sending her images of where they were.
Mentari dove under the water, heading towards Tad.

Kimath did see Mentari...but the blue, mischievous, failed to mention this fact to his rider. Thus, the first thing Tad knew of his wife's presence was when the Mentari-torpedo hit.
"Hey!" he spluttered. "Ganging up on me now?" His wife, his dragon, probably his wife's dragon, and he wasn't even sure where his firelizards were. He turned in the water as he broke free of her, looking for an opportunity for revenge. Before this was over it might well be a good thing nobody else was around...

Mentari surfaced, laughing hysterically. She turned to look innocently at her husband. "I was not aware I was on the same side as Kimath." She turned to give Kimath a wave and a thumbs up. "But thanks for not ruining the surprise!" She giggled.
She slowly trailed after Tad, her smile never faltering. She was enjoying this game. The fact that the water was nice and cool was a bonus. The heat was smeltering this time of year. Ladeth was enjoying it. The dragons seemed to enjoy the heat more than the people.

"Apparently everyone's ganging up on me except Cobweb." As if hearing his name, the speckled white flit appeared from Between and promptly dived into the water. It was a hot day and the water was, after all, the best place to be.
"Oh, there you are, you little rascal. I hope you weren't pestering the cooks."
The fact that the dragons no longer had to be secret meant that he wasn't keeping as close an eye on Cobweb as he had. The firelizards, being so small and apparently harmless, would help people get used to the idea.
Kimath just rumbled at Mentari, cheerfully...not that the blue was smart enough to often be anything else.

Mentari smiled and waved at Kimath. She was giggling slightly at Cobweb's appearance. He was a cute flit, and his markings were certainly exotic. But she shook her head at her husband. "Is it a bad thing for me to tease slash gang up on my husband?" She asked.
She was obviously daring him to do something about her actions. Mostly a water war was what she had in mind. The day was hot, and a water war was very relaxing.
((Epic fail. My muse kicked the bucket half way through the post.))

Tad grinned. "It's not *you* that's the problem. It's this great blue lump, 'cause if he joins in then it won't be fair...heck, him against both of us wouldn't be."
Cobweb emerged from the water, then dived back in again. The white was just kind of...playing with the surface.
Then, Tad attempted ambush-revenge on Mentari, abruptly moving towards her with the intent of knocking her backwards more into the water.

Mentari was about to answer when she noticed Tad bull rush her. She squealed, turning and swimming as far from him as she could. Then she began to laugh. So much so that she had to stop her retreat just to make sure she didn't inhale lake water.
((I'm failing lately. Doom...))

Tad laughed as well. It was good to relax, to not worry about anything. To not worry about Thread or people out there dying, or the destruction of their civilization and the need to rebuild.
Then again, he had ceased to be really part of Earth's civilization the moment he had Impressed Kimath. He was a dragonrider.
"So...where did you leave the twins. Faizah?" The Weyrwoman had a strong maternal instinct and loved looking after children. He did wonder, though, if she'd have to step down in favor of one of the goldriders. Surth could not command the other dragons the way a queen could, and they might need that.
Eh. For right now he was having fun with his wife, and he didn't plan on doing anything else. Hopefully they could manage to be outside the Weyr next time Ladeth rose...

Mentari shook her head. "Lakeen. Faizah is busy with Naktor, the quints and Weyr business." Mentari answered. Lakeen had her own son now, and with Lakeesk still sleeping, didn't mind taking the twins for a play date with the cousins. Virika was also there, Virisk sleeping as well.
It really was nice to be able to relax for once. Things had always been so hectic, so crazy. First it was making sure they stayed hidden from the rest of the World. Dragons were a huge deal, and Faizah didn't take it lightly what would happen if the wrong people found out about the dragons. Then stress transferred over to the black hole incident, which led them here.
Earth was next to Pern. People were dead, dragons were dead, and civilization on Earth had to start all over. That was enough to make most people go crazy. And Mentari didn't doubt that that exact thing had happened. More than a few people had run screaming from the Search and Rescue teams.
But she and her husband, and more importantly her children, were safe. Her family had come through it practically unscathed. And for that Mentari would always be grateful. She wondered how the Weyr had been so lucky. True that they had lost a few, but that was to be expected.
Mentari shook her head, chasing those morbid thoughts from her mind. She wouldn't think like that. Not now, when she was with Tad. Now was the time to relax, to enjoy being alive and well. The craziness and madness would have its time later...

"The quints. That's just scary. Two was frightening enough." Tad grinned at his wife. Two.
There might be more. The production of Earth contraceptives had been interrupted along with everything else. Which meant he could never be sure which were his. He had resolved himself not to care, and if they had to fly Thread then Mentari would probably be popping Between enough to compromise fertility anyway.
"Definitely frightening enough. It's bad enough when the numbers are even, I don't want to be *outnumbered*." He eyed the dragons. "And I can't count you guys because I never know who's side you're on."
Kimath just rumbled. Innocently. He wasn't the smartest blue, but giving his rider a hard time was part of a dragon's responsibility, right? Right.
Maybe.

Mentari laughed. "They weren't that bad. My pregnancy and the labor was very easy." She said, splashing Tad as she said it.
((Sorry for fail post...))

Tad laughed a bit. "You got lucky, then. But when it's my turn to watch them, they wear me out," he admitted.
Maybe it really was easier for women to keep up with their kids than it was for men. It was supposed to be more natural and instinctive, but he certainly didn't *think* he really loved the twins less than Mentari did.

Mentari smiled knowingly. "Oh, I never said they didn't wear me out. Just that being pregnant with them and giving birth to them wasn't as difficult as it could have been."
((Again, sorry for my fail post...))

He laughed again. "You got lucky, then. I've seen some of the women struggle." He thought about the twins. About what they would grow up to be.
And no, he didn't envy women and girls, not at all. Everything, he thought, would hit women harder than men. Except for the old people, struggling to find the medication they needed. That was equal opportunity.
"They're worth it, though, right?"

Mentari nodded knowingly. She knew she had gotten lucky with the twins. Things had been very easy for her. And while they were a handful at times, she wouldn't have traded them for the world.
She nodded to her husband. "Our boys certainly are worth it. Though they drive me up a wall at times, I don't regret having them." She smiled at Tad. "What about you?" She asked.

"Absolutely no regrets at all." He grinned at her. "I almost feel bad about the twins, but it's *not* my fault."
Not that she hadn't blamed him a few times when pregnant, but women did that. It was normal female behavior. Well, in humans. He hadn't heard Ladeth blaming Kimath for the eggs.
Much, anyway.
Well, it was his fault she had caught, but he wasn't taking responsibility for the double trouble. Nope. That was all on Mentari.

Mentari laughed and splashed Tad playfully. "I know the twin part is my fault. But its not my fault twins run in my family!" She exclaimed, her tone happy.
And twins did run in her family. Her mother had been a twin, and she had uncles somewhere that were twins. Faizah had been a twin, but had lost her sister. And her youngest brother had been a twin as well, also losing his brother. Not to mention, Mentari believed her grandmother had mentioned siblings who were twins or triplets before she passed.
"Nope, not my fault. And Faizah has it worse with her medical problem. Doctors once told her she is just as likely to have sextuplets than a single baby." Mentari mentioned, floating on her back. She was still watching Tad, a grin on her face.

"Given what happened to her sister, maybe that issue runs in the family." He frowned. "Humans aren't meant to have litters."
Not that it hadn't ended reasonably well, but... "Let's pray for a singleton. One's enough. Two's plenty. more than that..."
Now he was worried...if Nakia's quints weren't a fluke and Mentari got pregnant again? No. He did not want his beautiful wife to have to care for, as he put it, a "litter."
Nor did he want to have to help her. Really, he would be happy if the boys were the only children they ever had...

Mentari shook her head vehemently. "I'm in no hurry to have another kid. Two is more than plenty." She said.
She really didn't want any more kids. Perhaps when the twins were older she might try for a girl. But she was happy with her sons. She didn't need a daughter. Besides, she couldn't imagine being pregnant while taking care of two flits, a dragon and twin boys. It was simply too much work for her.
Not to mention she didn't want to worry Tad again. He had handled her pregnancy well, until they found out she had been carrying twins. And now it was different. They didn't have all the technology and medicine that was available just months before. Pregnancy and child birth could easily be twenty times more treacherous now...

"Definitely. I wonder if they'll end up riders," Tad mused.
Maybe they would, maybe they wouldn't. They'd almost certainly stand, with all that was going on, he could see Pernese traditions trying to creep in. The children of riders had a better than average chance of actually Impressing, after all.
His children. They'd probably both get blues, he thought wryly. Not that there was anything wrong with that. But they'd see what happened. "Heh. Maybe I should start calling myself T'deus like the Pernese riders do. What do you think, Kimath?"
The pale blue just rumbled in response. He didn't really care what his rider called himself...

Mentari nodded. "I've been wondering the same thing. Another thing to wonder about it what our lives are going to be like now. Will Earth try to rebuild, and can we, or will we become like the Pernese?" Mentari mused aloud.
At the mention of calling himself T'deus, Mentari stuck out her tongue. "Sounds so strange. I prefer calling you Tad." She laughed.

Tad grinned. "So do I, but it is the tradition for male riders, right?" He grinned at her.
"And I think we'll end up some kind of hybrid. Some Pernese traditions are about staying safe from Thread. Others, not so much. I don't see most Earth women turning into Pernese holdfolk, after all."
The building in stone, of course...or in earth in places where there wasn't enough stone. "We'll see what happens."
He might be glad he hadn't sired a daughter. Or no...any child he had would grow up in the Weyr, and not in whatever developed outside. They'd be safe.
