Name: Kye
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual, has homosexual partner at the moment.
Appearance: Lean and tall, he hardly looks his age; he's often mistaken for someone much younger. (And not just because he's constantly running around or babbling like a bored teenager.) He's just below six feet tall, though his habit of slouching makes him seem shorter. His build is really lean, and he sort of always looks like he's been half-starved; really skinny, and bony, though not quite to the point where it's not obvious he's got muscle on him.
He's got pale skin that happens to be mostly natural, and not at all related to his tendency of being mostly nocturnal after spending roughly half his life as a wherhandler. His hair is a sort of...well, red. Not copper, not oranger, not strawberry-blonde, RED. As if he were attacked by rust as a kid, and it just stuck.
Said hair is kept very short and somewhat unevenly cut in the front and sides, but in the back, a long tail of hair is left to grow; right now it's about to his waist. If he ever undid the tight tail he keeps it in, it would look...odd.
His eyes are dark blue, though it's rare he'll look at you long enough for you to notice. Directly under those eyes are long curved scars, one under each eye. This is the by-product of his impression with Kyesk, who's mother slashed him before letting him near any of her hatchlings. (That particular wher wasn't bound to a handler, and was known for being particularly aggressive when allowing candidates to her young.)
Either way, he's now got permanent and nearly symmetrical scars beneath his eyes, just along the upper edge of his cheekbones. He's got tons more scattered across his anatomy, though nothing prominent, and nothing one normally wouldn't come across on someone who lived a moderately active life with a wher.
He's fond of comfortable clothing that's easy to move in, but it also has to be protective and warm; he tends to travel a lot, and often at night for Kyesk's sake. Normally it's a loose shirt left open because he's too lazy to tie it properly, and whatever pants he's found that seem moderately clean, and sensible shoes- whatever's there and thick enough to resist damage. (Though anything he wears seems to be slightly rumpled. It's just something about him.) He does love one item of clothing in particular; it's a long hide jacket, dark brown, with a heavy hood and a lining of fur to keep in heat. (It was a gift from Riley after the lordling caught him fawning over it at a gather.) he also almost always wears a pair of tinted flight goggles pushed up on his forehead. It's not for any purpose anyone can obviously see, though; he wears them because it's easier to use Kyesk's sight if his own eyes have less light to deal with. Apparently, he says, it helps to translate the warped images he gets from the wher.

This is his "Sure, Riley, I'm listenin'," Face. Except he's not. And he's thinking innapropriate things.
History: Kye was born in Tillek Hold, and raised there for a good while. When he was six, his father (a trader who peddled mostly woodwork) was killed by a group of Holdless, and Kye's mother's family took them in at their farm where they bred herdbeasts.
Never one to care for schooling, and lacking the talent that would mark him for any crafthall, Kye never really figured he'd be anything but a cotholder. He spent his days working, and his nights doing much the same plus getting into messes he frequently paid for later, only with a bit of sleep thrown in for good measure. He loved anything relating to dragons, and his mother even noticed the way he'd stop and stare whenever one of the fighting wings flew overhead. However, nothing came of it, and like many, he was never searched.
Eventually Kye took up his father's job, and became a travelling trader, mostly just because he was bored at Tillek (and because he had a habit of starting fights and getting into trouble), and he enjoyed taking runnerbeasts to deliver news or goods to the smaller outlying Holds, or even sometimes hitching along with some of the larger travelling caravans- he quickly knew almost every waypoint the traders used for shelter, and each route's benefits and disadvantages. It was one day that he had stopped off at Tillek Hold (the proper hold, that is) when he was fifteen or so that his life was rather drastically altered.
The watchwher kept at Tillek had clutched, likely mating with a wild wher from nearby, and her eggs were hatching. Only a few were paying attention; some bored passerby, and a wherhandler visiting from Telgar for some reason. Kye was fascinated- he'd never understood people's dislike of whers; they were so much more sensible than dragons, and no-one gave them credit, really. They did the Holds a great service, but were treated like beasts.
Well, what it all came down to was Kye getting close to one of the eggs, and getting nearly flattened by the queen wher, and the resulting face-mauling that resulted, but in the end, Kyesk found him. The wher was at once his closest companion. He stayed at Telgar with the visiting wherhandler, learing how to care for a nocturnal creature, but once Kyesk seemed able, he experimented with taking the wher along with him back to Tillek.
That didn't work well.
It took a long time, with Kye and his bonded wher taking shelter in whatever cave Kyesk found during the day, and travelling only at night, along the traveller's trade routes. On the other hand, Kye got to become very familiar with wher behavior and their abilities and faults very quickly. By the time Kyesk and he returned to Tillek, he was entirely comfortable with everything Kyesk could do, would do, and exactly what it took to get the wher to do it.
After a while, Kye recieved a request from the Lord Holder of Lemos to come and help their newest wherhandler to get comfortable interacting with her wher. So, Kye and Kyesk set off again along the traderoutes following the same style of nocturnal travel. (Why Kye never thought to plead assitance moving Kyesk from Tillek's beholden Weyr is still unclear. It apparently never occurred to him, and Kyesk never seemed unwilling to travel by foot so long as Kye didn't try to travel throught the day; it was no different from what the Wild whers did, and they seemed fine.) Strangely, though Kye asked around, none of the Weyrs needed wherhandlers, so he stuck to working with the handlers at the various holds and crafthalls who needed help.
After a brief stint at Lemos to help the younger wherhandler, Kye ended up staying on there for a while simply because he found he liked it. And when, for whatever unfathomable reason, the Lord Holder of Lemos asked him if he'd be willing to act as a guardian to his son, Kye agreed. (It was on a whim, really.) Lemos' Lord reasoned that they couldn't spare the Hold's wher, but that he understood that the watchwhers were excellent guardians, knowing exactly who belonged and who did not belong in their territory. Hence, Kye and Kyesk were to accompany Riley to the minorhold and serve as that Hold's wher pair, and as Riley's guardians on the side. (Lord Raiden was still paranoid about some assassination attempt or other. Kye just liked the pay, so he never argued.)
Then, it was all normal from there. Kye ended up seducing Riley after discovering the young lordling couldn't hold his liquor, (though Riley denies it) and Kye ended up seriously falling for the kid. So he stuck around even after the Lord Holder stopped freaking out about Riley's saftey. When he found out Riley was going to be stationed at Rocky, it clicked. He found out from F'lar that Rocky currently had no experienced wherhandlers, and volunteered right away to work as Rocky Weyr's Wherlingmaster.
Personality: Bouncy. Kye can't sit still, and his brain is just as active as his body. If he's forced to sit quietly somewhere, it won't be long before he's tapping his fingers on something, or humming, or getting up to pace around. (It's why travelling was his favorite thing, despite the danger of threadfall, holdless, and wild felines and whers. Though Kyesk was enough to deter everything but Thread itself once grown- NOTHING messes with an angry wher.)
He's also very laid-back. If something goes wrong, he'll roll with the punches, and if it goes right, he'll roll with that. He's not one for planning or structure, and prefers to act on spur-of-the-moment decisions. Oddly, this works well for him, and he's developed a very keen sense of perception; he's able to react very quickly to anything thrown at him. Couple this with his natural relaxed attitude and an ability to brush off almost anything, and he's incredibly resilient and very good at dodging responsibility- you wouldn't guess it at first, but really, He always acts very lazy, and prefers to exert the bare minimum amount of effort. But he's no slouch; he's always aware of what;s going on around him; he just finds it easier to pretend he doesnt. People don't ask him to do things that way.
He does have quite a few bad habits; he's overly fond of alcohol, and drinks a lot, though he's developed a high tolerance level and he's never drunk in public to the point of doing anything stupid- that anyone knows about, that is. (Though he's one of the few who prefer the bitter and acidic Tillek wines to Benden's finer ones. ) He also has a bad tobacco addiction- simple pipe-smoking on Pern turned into a really bad habit when he came to Rocky.
He's also fond of swearing, and he doesn't care what people think of him. Along with that he's the type to be excessively lazy, and he doesn't do well with deadlines. It gets done when it's done. Sadly, this affects his social life too- add that to the fact that he's still sort of a jerk and isn't a big fan of the whole momogamy thing, and you realize he's kind of a terrible choice romantically. He's also stupidly cocky.
This makes him seem like a pushover, and the type to be around when you jsut want to have fun, but that too ia s lie. Kye is absolutely focused on something when it's important, and he'll never let failure stop him from something he's determined about. He'll do his best to please people, too, and when he's not being a smartass, he's actually pertty pleasant to talk to- if you can keep his attention. And when it comes right down to it, you mess with his friends, he'll mess with you. Anyone who even so much as thinks of insulting him, Riley, or Kyesk is going to get thrashed, and if anyone were unwise enough to try to harm any of them Kye would step in.
Actually, he's sort of loyal to a fault. He'd willingly die for Riley, and he's done some pretty stupid things to keep the kid safe and sheltered from the big bad world. (Riley is perfectly aware of this and it pisses him off, big time. Still it's sort of flattering.) But still, he is who he is and he's figured that people are either going to accept that, and be happy, or try to change him, fail, and then move around to the accepting part eventually.
Still, the combination of his ruthless dedication to the job and his rather easy-going personality, flippant attitude and mocking sense of humor lead many to believe that he's become someone sure of himself. Kye knows exactly what he's about and how to get the job done- he's a combination of lazy, messy, crude, and total badass, all wrapped up in one. He's so sure of that he has no problem having a bit of fun. But when he kicks into action, he takes charge and is all business.
Wanted Firelizard Color: Any.
Wanted Wher Color: Any.
Wher Defect/Injury: Willingness to go with Kye when he accepted the position as Wherlingmaster?
Or something else? (Is extreme good-naturedness a defect?)
Wanted Firelizard Name: Scout
EDIT: Yeah, just FYI, he and Riley are pretty much hiding anything past the 'We're sorta aquainted' part of their relationship. Kye could really care less, but he keeps it quiet because frankly, he isn't so keen on being ostracized.
Bronze Kyesk - Kyesk is a stoic wher if there ever was one. He's surprisingly level headed for his species and is rather diplomatic when he can be. Of course, he is not exempt from the aggression of his kin when him or Kye are threatened. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary to see Kyesk slink off on his own, away from his bonded, as he is quite independent. Even so, the strong bond with Kye means that his mind is never far away.
Kyesk is a lovely burnished brass color, and though it's frequently impossible to tell, he's quite shiny, like new-forged metal. However, this mostly comes off as a vaguely green-brown tint in the night, though he's easily recognized as bronze. He's got no markings, and is one solid color but for a bit of a darker bronze along his back and neck ridges, as if he were tarnishing like true metal, little splotches fading down onto his shoulders and tail.
((He doesn't need a defect if you don't want one, since he was needed at Rocky. But if you do, I'll try and come up with one. ))
Green Scout - Scout is an inquisitive flitter, always asking Kye to explain things to her. She tries not to be rude, but she can be quite persistent in her search for answers. She wouldn't go as far as rifling through people's belongings, but if she wants to investigate something, she might hover around it, sending images to any passerby's inquiring about it's contents or what it does. (Kye has mostly used Scout as a, well, scout, sending her ahead of him when he's travelling to make sure they're never surprised.)
Scout's a pretty dark green-browinsh color, sort of a deep khaki. She's got no really spectacular markings, though her limbs and tail are a little darker than her body, and her wings are flecked with a gold-brown-yellow color. She's very pretty, but she blends easily with the plantlife, and you will often find her nosing around houseplants.
