So I've been mulling some stuff over in my mind recently, and wanted to throw out a few thoughts that have stuck regarding the state of the Weyr.
See, here's the thing. I've got myself a gold who's just about mature, right? And I would love more than almost nothing else to be able to have her rise so we could finally have a gold clutch, and hopefully bring a little more action and possibly even new rp-ers.
Buuut... there are a couple issues. One, the amount of bronzes currently available is very small. (Minor issue, though.) Two- my personal record for being only semi-active. I know i can promise activity enough to finish the flight and the hatching and that with no difficulty...but then comes the last issue. In THEORY, the first gold to fly becomes the senior queen, yadda yadda. But I don't necessarily have the time to be on quite THAT much, nor do I want to steal the position just because I'm the only gold-playing member currently around. (Topaz nonwithstanding.)
And then something occoured to me. Rocky isn't Pern- should it have the same set of rules? Like, is there any really good reason Faizah shouldn't stay in charge? Any Pernese-born Queen rider wouldn't have the knowledge to be able to run a Weyr on Earth, and most of the Earth-born goldriders don't have enough knowledge of Pern to be able to successfully integrate the two cultures and manage well.
Who's to say Faizah shouldn't stay Weyrwoman (or at least in charge) for a while longer? She has enough knowledge and experience with both worlds to be able to run the Weyr, and the Military is likely going to heavily favor someone Earth-born to run the Weyr...why not have Faizah stay? She set up the Weyr on her own, and Surth, being a white, is actually probably far more reasonable and level-headed than a gold (because we all know how they get sometimes.)
((And I know for a fact, if Fayeth were ever to be a ranking queen, she'd be more inclined to bite someone who was being surly with Hers than to try to cooperate...Queens are just that- queens. With all the haughty arrogance that royalty brings.))
So that was the idea I wanted to throw out for the time being.
A lot because i'd really like to play Fayeth more, and finally have her rise, and a good deal because I've realized I don't actually want a ranking position with my availability as it is...
And if that Idea doesn't appeal... would it be possible to have my gold fly and choose not to take the position? Like, say Miyuki knew she couldn't handle it, especially because she speaks only barely fluent English, and she hasn't been trained as a Weyrwoman for years like most goldriders on Pern are.
Alright, so that wasn't exactly coherent...basically, what I'm throwing out as food for thought is this- is there a reason Rocky would be as hard-pressed as other Weyrs to have a Queen and a Bronze as their head dragons? Surth and Gorth seem perfectly capable on their own. Why not have a democracy-type leadership system?
If i understand correctly, the leadership system as-is on pern arose simply because a democratic system would not have worked. An authoritarian autocracy was necessary to sustain order with the widespread panic of threadfall, and it simply has not changed. On Earth, there is no thread, so there is also less of a need for a strict power hierarchy. Perhaps the weyr could set up a council of some sort, with high-ranking riders, important Terran figures (like Fredericks, and government officials, etc) and even a few Pernese representatives, who all act together to get the presence of dragons established on Earth?
((Heh. Parliament of sorts...))
Now keep in mind I have no idea what anyone had planned for the future of Rocky, or anything like that. I just happened to be thinking about this, and a few ideas came to mind, and I thought I'd throw them out there.
And...yeah. I REALLY want to be able to play with my gold more, so ...there's selfishness involved.
I swear, i'm mostly done rambling. That was the thought and the discussion part, now my question.
How big are whers? It seems to be consensus at least in the books they're roughly the same size as Horses, and they're definitely capable of flight, even if only at night. But they seem able to fly thread on their own, and to be able to carry a rider...
But this all comes from Todd McCaffery's books, so...yeah. But it mentions that A: Nuellask (a gold) is easily able to carry Nuella on her back and fly thread, so she has to be somewhat large...
B: At least by the beginning of the third pass (the timelines in Todd's books are wierd...) there were established wherholds.
Question mostly- We have a length listed in our information, but what's the consensus on ability? Can whers fly? And either way, are they capable of carrying a human, even if only in the same manner a Horse would? (Short trips on it's back?)
