Detailed History
Ten turns ago, a reckless weyrling betweened without permission, emerging on a brand new planet: Earth. The young weyrling hadn’t realized he was on a different planet until they flew for a few miles and, not recognizing anything, had panicked and betweened back to Pern. For a while they kept their secret, until the boy gained an infection in one of the cuts he had gained on his accidental trip. The healers, baffled by the foreign bacteria, demanded the boy to explain. Spilling his guilt to the Weyrleaders, a conclave was called.
Within that first year, many trips to the new planet had been made, but contact with the humans there was forbidden. The military, however, was kept close tabs on the strange UFOs that had been sighted above the Rocky Mountains. A year after the first sighting, jet fighters were sent up as one of the UFOs appeared. Stunned by what they saw, the pilots rushed back to report these dragons. They were not sure how to respond, but eventually one of the larger creatures was flagged down during his sweep of the mountains.
The government learned of Pern's Candidate problem. With the rapidly growing population of dragons, few suitable Candidates were being found for the Hatchings. The President offered a solution: that firelizard eggs be distributed in a controlled fashion in the U.S.A. and a few other countries who were discretely notified. This would draw out some Earthlings who might be willing to leave Earth to take on an important responsibility on Pern.
This system went on for years until the Pernese began to experience another problem. A large number of dragonets were developing sicknesses or hatching with defects, making them unable to be successful on Pern. It was decided that a Weyr should be constructed to alleviate the stress of the Weyrs. He thought of no better location for the establishment than the Rockies, where the Pernese had first appeared. Since then, the Rocky Weyr of Earth has grown in size and population, until a second was required. The Japanese accepted the Pernese this time, building a Weyr on one of their many isolated islands. This sister Weyr, the Isle Weyr, is small and new but is growing.
But than the unthinkable happened.
A black hole formed within the solar system. It seemed far too small to cause any damage. However, almost overnight it grows large enough to swallow Earth completely. Unlike the theory of black hole phenomena astrologists share, instead of destroying the thriving planet, it acts like a wormhole and deposits it next to Pern.
The gravitational pull of the two planets was, naturally, too much to resist for the Red Star. Once again, the orbital path of the planet changed. Suddenly, thread began to fall on Earth as well as on Pern. Dragons once thought unable to fight Thread suddenly have to rise up in defense of thier new home. As catastrophe due to Thread becomes imminent, Rocky and Isle Weyrs are forced out of hiding.
Obviously new Earthian Weyrs are needed, but it takes precious time at the cost of millions of lives and major cities all over the world.
The Red Star now orbits both Earth and Pern. It will drop Thread on Pern for a shortened amount of time; 45 yrs/Turns. For twenty of those years, it will also drop Thread on Earth. But Earth will also have to fight Thread, alone, for an additional 60 yrs. Thread also falls more often now. Instead of once every 200 Turns, as it was before, it falls once every 125yrs/Turns.

What's Happening
Some of the Riders have been talking, and rumors are beginning to fly at Rocky. Is the first Earthian Gather sometime in the future? They think so! Carefully saved money will fly as shops will be openned to both the Weyr and the public.
The senior Weyrlings are getting excited. Soon, their Graduation from Weyrling to full-fledged Rider will take place. Though a little late for many of them, and in some cases, early, they can't wait to officially call themselves Dragonmen and Dragonwomen - of Earth!
There has been a baby boom in the Weyrs! Suddenly there are new voices popping up and saying hello to the world for the first time.
